Read the new chapter yesterday. It was basically nothing. A little bit of talk.

What I think is interesting that the Falcon is doing so much good and I’m not sure what his end goal is.

I am loving the animation in Kimetsu no Yaiba. Probably the most fun to watch anime in several seasons. Decent story so far too.

Also, just watched Netflix' Ultraman. It was actually a little better than I expected it would be, but damn am I tired of MCs that question their powers/roles in the same exact fucking way.

There's actually quite a lot to it. Mainly the reference to Griffith trying to make the "second kingdom of Midland". There are a lot of people speculating that
Gaiseric (or Skull Knight) was in the same position as Griffith. Sacrificed a lot so that the God Hand will give him power, raised his own kingdom and than got betrayed by the God Hand which is why he is fighting them.
There's also the fact that Griffith might be the moonlight boy

Skull Knight became what he is because he had to fight against the God Hand itself and is rumored to be as old as them though.

Anyone else excited to see what Kishimoto does with his new manga, Samurai 8? Apaarently he's promised to make it bigger than Naruto... Sounds like a tall task, but the man is a legend. I won't doubt him.

Synopsis
The date is 2002, three years after the events of PATLABOR 1 – Mobile Police. The destruction of a United Nations Labor team in South East Asia begins the build-up to a deadly terrorist plan that threatens to send shockwaves throughout Japan's military. With evidence of an impending military takeover, the scattered members of the original SVD (Special Vehicle Division) must gather to defend the city against danger. To make matters worse, the mastermind behind the operation is none other than Nagumo's former teacher and ex-lover Tsuge.

For the average anime fans who watched a lot or older animated shows or movie, when you discussed of which is Oshii Mamoru best work he ever directed based on his signature style he tend to put in his movie (aka: politics & philosophy mixed into a very complex plot with deep characterization of the main characters while throw in beautiful and smooth animation work), chances are majority will say the Ghost in the Shell movie which was released in 1995. For me, I think Patlabor 2 the movie might be Oshii Mamoru better work if not much better over Ghost in the Shell.

Patlabor 2 took place three years after the events of Patlabor 1. Members of the Special Vehicles 2nd Division have move on in their life to pursue careers in different departments or public sector in Japan. Everything is peaceful till a major incident where a missile (launch by a military aircraft) damage the bridge in Tokyo Bay where a suspicious car was located and called by the police. Martial law was declare and suspicion started to come out that the Japanese Air Self Defense Force aircraft might be the one who launched the missile to destroy the car on the bridge. A fear of some sort of military coup between the air force and the self defense force of Japan have bring the old members of the Special Vehicles 2nd Division to come back and to try to found out who is trying to destroy the peace and harmony in Japan and more importantly, what is at stake.

Like the 1st movie, this isn't a typical mecha format movie where you see tons of action scene between two mech battle it out . It's more a plot driven movie with heavy focus on political scheme and philosophical justification. Watching the different military division of Japan and other involved parties scheming for control of the situation is wonderful to watch with nothing that occurs being as simple or straightforward as people might think. This complex of the plot can be bewildering at time but you started to realize this movie wasn't to be design to be enjoyed straightforward but more to reflect of the situation in today time. Still, they is some action still present in the movie but it's feel like an afterthought while more time have spend on the plot of the movie.

As for the visual animation, Patlabor 2 is much better than the 1st movie. The detailed scenery adds the realism to the movie which make sense considers the Patlabor world tend to copy the realism of Japan at the time. This realistic approach is also shown in the character design as you notice they have some physical growth during the time from the 1st movie to the 2nd movie. The battle scene (even though limited) are done quite well and help push the tension of the situation .

One major difference between Patlabor 2 over Patlabor 1 is it's more political drama driven with a mix of philosophical justification while the 1st movie, it's more characters driven and the interaction between them during the situation . Yes, the 1st movie do have some political drama but it isn't like the 2nd movie where you started to notice the effects of the missile attacks, the deep division between the military branch in Japan, and the martial law which come after and how this consequences effects the characters in the movie.

Overall, Patlabor 2 is an excellent political thriller movie to watch and like most fans of the franchise, I can see why they love it. If you never saw it or want to go into this hidden gems franchise now, I would look into this movie but keep within the serious timeline of what you need to watch. Great movie and might be one of the better work Oshii Mamoru have directed in.

Finished watching The Vision of Escaflowne last night. Not sure why this doesn't get more love. It's a classic 90s anime. Plot is a bit nonsensical but there's a lot to love.

It reminded me in tone of Nadia and The Secret of the Blue Water - another extremely underrated show.

Amazing movie and good write-up.

Something you didn't touch on is the idea of a just/unjust war which I think is the driving point of the film.

Since WWII Japan has effectively been in a passive state owing to it only being an allowed an army to defend in case of it being attacked (the Japanese Self Defence Force). Where the film comes into its own is in questioning whether aggressors in conflict should be allowed to attack prior to being attacked themselves. Most of Japan would agree it is as within modern history Japan values its sense of peace - a concept that's a bit alien to western countries like the UK and US. From what I remember oshii seems to be asking whether it's worth losing a few lives to save potentially many more and what happens if that alters the ideological position of the country meaning that they become more 'engaged' in warfare in the long-run. This comes into its own in the film as Japan is being attacked by unknown forces - a political topic in the mid-90s after the Sarin gas attacks.

This has also been relevant of late too owing to Trump's refusal to foot the bill for US defence internationally. I'm not much up to date with Japanese politics but last I heard there was heightened pressure on Shinzo Abe to loosen his stance on being a defence-only country. This was much to the chagrin of Japan's more liberal population.

This is my favourite scene.

I've always enjoyed Escaflowne as well. It really is weird that it doesn't get that much attention anymore. When it was still current, the show was right up there for must-see mecha anime. Nowadays, though, it seems largely forgotten with subsequent generations of anime viewers. Unfortunately, its absence from current anime zeitgeist has done nothing to make figures from the show any cheaper on auction sites. XD

I think the script is kinda whack in parts which is why no one reps it but it does have iconic parts about it which is why no one forgot it. Kazuki Akane has done better series since. You should watch the movie for the animation but you may be disappointed in it if you expect much from it.

Yea, this is also a major part of this movie and what you describe basically explain the situation quite well. As you know, Oshii tend to put this mature discussion quite a bit in some of his movie and I do love watching it. This just/unjust war and whether it's worth the price or not which isn't far false when you consider the situation we're living in this world. Also, this is one of the major scene which also one of the better part of this movie.

Both are great show (more in Escaflowne). I think Escaflowne is starting to becoming this hidden gems show where only people who watch a lot of anime will know while the newer generation of anime fans might not hear of it.

On the one hand Naruto is one of the main reasons that got me into manga and it was one of my favourite things in my early teens... So there's this sort of nostalgic love for it that makes me want to check out Kishimoto's new work.

But at the same time I thought Naruto started going downhill after the timeskip and then kept getting increasingly worse. So I don't have that much hype for it

Schierke and Serpico can't hold a candle to anyone in Griffith's OP party. Hell I think Guts himself would have trouble with either of em even in dog form.

Doing so much good? After what????😂😂

Griffith fucked over the BotH to get back on the path to his perfect kingdom free of classes, which in turn involved fucking over the entire world with the global interstice to make everyone have to live in Falconia under his rules. An already fucked up world now has rapist trolls and all manner of other monsters from the id manifested in it.

Even if Falconia looks good, it is only because he made everything else such shit. He is kind of like Zero from MGS in that regard - to "save" the world, he manipulated it such that people have no choice but to live as he wants them to. So he definitely isn't the "did nothing wrong" type.

I disagree. Guts' experience with the BotH during the Golden Age shows that evil is not all that exists in the world. He eventually lost most of what he had (the only intact person afterwards being Rickert), but he still found happiness and saw good in the world during it (the "Bonfire of Dreams" scene comes to mind).

Is the world better off being nigh unlivable outside of Falconia?

Correct. Sacrificing the only people that loved and believed in you just for his selfish needs. Griffith did EVERYTHING wrong

Yondome wa Iyana Shi Zokusei Majutsushi
The Death Mage Who Doesn't Want a Fourth Time
aka
In my second reincarnation I'm a half-vampire, my mother is a big tittied dark elf, and I'm a bonémon master

This has a few chapters out now. An amusing read so far. The story is basically about this poor son of a bitch guy that has had bad luck his whole life. He dies in a cruise ship accident with the rest of his classmates. They arrive in the afterlife and are told they can be reincarnated to Earth with no memory of their previous life or they can go to a magic world with their previous life's memory intact and some bonus buffs. Most of the students decide to go to the magic world. As they are being called up by the being that is giving them their "gifts", someone with a name and appearance very similar to the MC gets a lot of gifts from the deity and then MC is last up. The deity realizes he fucked up and gave the other student the gifts, fortune, and luck meant for both of them and he had nothing to give the MC. The diety informs him that because he has nothing the only benefit he'll have is a large storage for mana and that his life is going to suck. I'm not going to get into what happens with this incarnation, but suffice to say it's really fucking bad. One thing that comes out of his time in that incarnation is that he has an aptitude for a magic type that hadn't before existed in that world, death magic. When the MC returns to the afterlife the deity informs MC that he still can't help him this time but his 4th life will be different so he might as well die as soon as possible. He also gives MC a curse so that he can't gain exp or gain jobs. MC is born into a fantasy world as a half vampire to a sweet dark elf mother. MC says fuck it I'm not dying again and resolves to survive in this world.

Realist Maou Niyoru Seiiki Naki Isekai Kaikaku
The Legendary Rebuilding of the World by a Realist Demon King

Only one chapter out so far. It's about a guy that reincarnates into a fantasy world as the last born of 72 and weakest demon lord. He decides to conquer the world and defeat the other demon lords using common sense. There's one part in the chapter that made me laugh, not to spoil it but it revolves around fantasy game tropes and a sword.

I am. Outside the main character everybody needs to die in a fire out of being incompetent even for a shonen manga. Maybe everybody is just legit retarded like Power but at the same time the MC is thirsty as fuck.

I think he is still a dick and just hiding it/scheming.
He tries to get all of humanity in the one safe place he provides and then will offer them all up to be slaughtered or something like that imo.

Yeah, it's decent enough. Character interactions are humourous which Fujimoto excels at. Nothing amazing so far but I haven't really read the recent chapters.
Kind of seems like it should be on Young Jump but it has the basic foundations of a Shonen title.

I don't see him losing to anything. He has been built up to live in triumph.

No it doesn't lol.
The manga is called Chainsaw Man and he rips shit up regularly. The last chapter I read has him rip a house sized flesh room to room demon while the other idiots do nothing. He transforms by ripping his own face in two. On top of it having body horror in almost every single chapter the first chapter in fact has him torn from limb to limb like Meaty was in Made in Abyss.

Mitty. I guess it looks like kiddie shit next to Terra-Formars but eh, all the other series on that shit are things like Kaguya Sama so??? I read the VIZ scans.

Disregard, I need to stop "multitasking".

Ah, since you made it obvious you haven't read anything in Young Jump other than Kaguya (and maybe Terra Formers?) I'll just point out the leap in logic in saying that a Shonen title could be too violent for a Seinen magazine.

Vagabond is the worst offender by far. At least HxH gets a batch of chapters every year or two. Even D.Gray-Man is getting new chapters every now and then (although the story is going in circles).

Pretty sure Inoue just doesn't give a shit about Vagabond anymore so I basically don't have any hope of it finishing. But seeing as he's drawing Real again maybe there's a slight chance.

Yes, I confused Young Jump with the Shonen Jump. I found it weird you mentioned Seinen which is why I replied like that. I take it if you read them and are japanese or at least understand the language?

Nah, N5 if anything, but barely that.

The ones I were thinking of have been translated or are still being translated, you probably even know them but just didn't know they were under Young Jump.

Gantz, TG (and TG:RE) and All You Need Is Kill. Terra Formas you already mentioned. There's Kingdom, which is pretty tame compared to the aforementioned and I'd even call it Shonen if it werent for it being about war but it has its moments. I guess you could throw in Golden Kamuy but I haven't read it since around chapter 50.

Anyway, it doesn't really matter if you agree that YJ is Seinen.
