So we against capitalism now? That's kind of how it works. New ideas make a big hit at the market at first, but the real money comes from executing that idea correctly. Usually the first step and the second are not done by the same company.

Hell, look at Fortnite. Every company does it.
No I love capitalism, and I think they should be driving each other along, but right now we have one running for the future and the other being drug behind kicking and screaming.

I wish we had 2 companies driving for the same so we could advance quicker.

I think you are confusing things here lol

Toshinden was the first fighting game to put 3D characters in a 3D environment.

Even today it is credited to taking the genre into the “true 3D”.
Um, how is Vitrua Figher not a 3D game with 3D fighters?

Sony vastly increased the audience/customer base for consoles. The first console to reach over 100 million in sales (PSONE), first console to reach over 150 Million in sales (PS2).

Pioneered new mediums with greatly increased storage, video and audio capabilities such as DVD and Blu-Ray.

Introduced better standards of voice acting and performance capture. Facial animation and detail.

Pioneered the Driving simulation genre with GT series.

Allowed games companies to operate on a platform without restrictions on how many games the could produce each year... Nintendo had become very difficult to work with.

Sony 1st party has been cultivated and grown for over two decades to become the cutting edge in gaming, providing experiences that are unparalleled and seemingly impossible to replicate elsewhere.

Sony has stepped in, in several cases to fund titles that would not otherwise have been made such as SFV and Shenmue.

The PS1, PS2, PSP and PSVita had excellent technology that pushed the industry forward on a price/value basis. PS3 also attempted to do something admirable but didn't work out.

Sony never overpriced their console, as they took losses on PS3 and PS4, while the hardware was very dependable. Meanwhile Microsoft had the RROD and Nintendo always made money on their consoles from day 1 with Switch build quality being very poor.

Sony also offers great sales compared to the competition. Free games through PS+ was an innovation that Sony brought in, MS would have you paying just to play online with no benefits.

If Sony was not in the industry, XBox would have gone full DRM / always online / killed physical media and would never have invested in new studios. They would have laced every game with microtransactions and you'd never get another singleplayer game.

In other words the industry would be a total disaster without Sony, they are the only ones stopping it from becoming a shitshow and not all progress is good.... so you are putting forward a false narrative.

But you are sill ignoring the 3DO.

Also the PS1 wasn't that great at 3D, it lacked perspective correction which made the 3D graphics unstable. Even the 3DO was better at this.
Yes there were other 3D consoles before the PS1. But how well did they sell. Sony was the 1st to push 3D really hard. I know Microsoft hasn't done much to move gaming forward but I have to say the 1st time I saw Halo on the Xbox I was blown away. Made my PS2 look weak. But to be honest, as much as I love Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft. The Dreamcast will probably forever stay my favourite console of all time

Answers to you questions:

1. Dunno, but those other companies didn't do them so what if's are useless to me in situations like that. Sony put out a product I wanted, so I bought it.

2. Don't really care about the gaming community, I buy the consoles so I can play the games they put out. It's for me.

3. "Better" is pretty subjective. Nothing the others done has really impacted my gaming life that much, and if other companies offer something I dig, I'll go check them out (Got a Switch to play BOTW and Octopath). Wording this like Sony is some overlord or something kinda weakens whatever point you're trying to make. These are corporations after your money, if they put good shit out, get it. If not, don't. I have no idea why there has to be this negative 'rulership' connotation around discussions like this. Sure, they're market leaders but so what? Things change if that's not what people want.

So.......basically Sony is not doing things you personally want which you came in to conclusions of Sony holding entire industry back? Dose that make any sense for anybody else here?

That’s a bunch of hyperbole and completely untrue, but you can continue to tell yourself that.

Sony saved you from giant patches regardless if you bout it Digital or not, they saved your disc so you own it. They are the saviour of al that is high and mighty.

None of Sony’s games require 20 gig downloads right? Or it would make that arguement moot.

Yeap it has 3D graphics but it is essentially a 2D fighting game... Tekken copies Virtua Figther doing the same 2D fighting game with 3D graphics.

Toshinden was the first true 3D fighting game... it had sidestepping maneuvers and a camera that followed the character.

I think you need to play both to understand why Toshinden is credited for taking the genre to the “true 3D”.

Again, you are moving goalposts here. You went from "first console with 3D games" to "First console that pushed 3D games very hard".

What does "very hard" even mean? I would argue Nintendo pushed 3D games even harder with the N64. I mean they pushed the analog stick as a standard "for 3D movement" and developers were encouraged to make 3D games a priority, that's why there are so few 2D games in that console. The N64 also did "proper" 3D graphics, with a hardware designed mainly for that, for instance N64 graphics don't suffer from unstable "wobbly" triangles thanks to perspective correction.

From every way you look at it, saying Sony introduced 3D games/graphics in any way or context is false.

I still haven’t seen a convincing arguement that they helped move it forward.

Are you going to be the one that finally has something?

I doubt it, after looking at your post history.

Well they had the best exclusives this gen by far and were able to bring VR into the mainstream with an affordable VR headset.

Games like Uncharted 4, Marvel's Spider-man and God of War really took gaming to the next level in terms of visuals and narrative and in the VR space they created Astro Bot, which is the Mario 64 of VR and a truly extraordinary experience.

I say all this as somebody who is pretty neutral and was a 360 gamer last gen. Sadly, this gen, MS just pissed away all they had built during the previous gen.

You were told the best one from the very beginning.

Games.

You should accept that the best advance in any gaming console are made by games.

You just got deaf for everything outside your blind and biased opinion.

Even so this is a very specific thing. You can say "PS1 was the console that introduced 3D fighters with actual 3D gameplay". You can't say the PS1 introduced 3D graphics or games in general. Other consoles had "real" 3D games that pioneered "real 3D gameplay" in other genres. This is game depended, not console.

I know everyone here loves Sony and I’ll probably get reported to hell for this.

But what has Sony done for gaming that nobody else could have done?

How have they advanced the gaming community to make it a better place?

Where are we going to show how gaming can be better under Sonys rules?
First Dual Analog Controller which has become standard to this day but this could have been done by anyone.

These, however, I don't think could have been done by anyone. At least not at that time in point in the game industry without Sony.

The Net Yaroze one of the first console development kit made available to hobbyists.
Sony also revolutionized third-party game development and support.

This was Nintendo's third party policy before PlayStation came along.

License guidelines
Nintendo of America also had guidelines before 1993 that had to be followed by its licensees to make games for the Nintendo Entertainment System, in addition to the above content guidelines.[132] Guidelines were enforced through the 10NES lock-out chip.

  • Licensees were not permitted to release the same game for a competing console until two years had passed.
  • Nintendo would decide how many cartridges would be supplied to the licensee.
  • Nintendo would decide how much space would be dedicated for articles, advertising, etc. in the Nintendo Power magazine.
  • There was a minimum number of cartridges that had to be ordered by the licensee from Nintendo.
  • There was a yearly limit of five games that a licensee may produce for a Nintendo console.[138] This rule was created to prevent market over-saturation, which had contributed to the North American video game crash of 1983.
The last rule was circumvented in a number of ways; for example, Konami, wanting to produce more games for Nintendo's consoles, formed Ultra Games and later Palcom to produce more games as a technically different publisher.

Sony came and threw all that out the window, that is why PlayStation has always been a place for third party games. This to me is the single greatest contribution Sony ever gave the industry.

Starting from PSP (the best portable gaming device i have ever owned imo), Sony also removed region locking of games by default, publishers have to explicitly region lock their games which very few did.

Going back to ps1 all through-out to mid ps3. Minus this recent censorship bullshit they did help a lot of Japanese games actually have western releases. a lot of studios didn't have cash to port more than one platform back in the day let alone world wide, you may have noticed many Japanese games never left the shores of japan with out needing importing. or even the costs of localization and licensing Sony assisted with this for many studios.
Nintendo originally had third party Japanese support in the nes/snes but only from major publishers, but around the n64 era they lost it due to some licensing guidelines only to gain it back later on especially with switch.
Microsoft has been pushing since 360 era to get their games on the western platform and japan support has never been stronger as it is now.
Japan is fully third party now supporting everything including the likes of pc but in the late 90's to early 2000's most of those games wouldn't have hit our shores with out Sony as a whole for gaming this is what I believe they have done.

They made Third Parties feel much more important than their own Studios, they gave a damn about Europe when they launched the first Playstation.

They made a community for people interact with one another who tried out different things and experimented with how games played. Word of Mouth was great back then.

However, these days I feel like they rest on their laurels far too much and have made their Western output too similar to one another without that experimental nature.

I still play on Playstation for the Third Party stuff but it seems like they are moving to Nintendo/Microsoft more thanks to their censorship policies.

I don't think Nintendo's monopoly was an issue after Sega threw that out of the window with the Genesis/Mega Drive.

You're completely ignoring some posts, barely acknowledging others that make valid points, editing your responses to look less idiotic and resorting to drive-by posts like this instead of making an argument.

I don't know what you expect from other people in this thread.

  • It brought some great IP like Crash, Killzone and what not. Also LittleBigPlanet
  • It was the first console line to support open development thru Net Yaroze and PS2 Linux.
  • The PS3 had blu-ray which ended up being the leading optical medium.
  • The PS2 brought DVD's to the masses imo.
  • It had the GSCube which was a workstation that did Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within and Antz scenes in real time.
  • Through Cell, it enabled supercomputing for a lower budget before CUDA based GPU's took over. (PS3 Gravity Grid.)
  • It had Folding At Home support to aid research for Alzheimer's, cancer, and Huntington diseases
  • PS3 was home to huge social hub's like PS Home.
  • It had fantastic commericals in the PSX era.
  • It had the PSP, bringing console quality gaming to the handheld first time since 1989's Atari Lynx.
There is a lot to be said about Sony that isn't positive, like their abysmal account support, but Sony has done a lot of interesting tidbits in gaming besides shipping consoles.
Moving from 2D to 3D. Without the PS1 I think we would have been stuck with 2D games a lot longer.
I doubt it. Sega was a big competitor at the time and a leader in arcade 3D. They brought the Saturn, but i don't think they were well aware of Sony releasing a console, especially when at the time it was known that they worked with Nintendo. (The infamous Nintendo Playstation).

There was also the 3DO that brought 3D Texturemapping to the consoles.

N64 was out before and went 3D first.
This is wholly incorrect. What disappoints me is that when this is pointed out to you, you shift the goals to another metric point. This kind of discussion is not exactly honest. As you can tell i am giving a honest answer to most of your points and id appreciate it if you do the same to not only me, but everyone else in this thread.

Name the 3D games before 1996.
Among Jumping Flash and Wipeout, there was also King's Field, a launch title in JP from 1994.

Then there was also the 3D fighter Battle Arena Toshinden from 1995 and ofcourse, Ridge Racer. This is ofcourse, only talking about PSX.

The PSX also had a visualizer (I think only the 3DO prior had this) when no disc was inserted (In the memory card menu, i believe) and could run music CD's, which was a novelty at the time.

The PSX hardware was also used aplenty as an Arcade System Board, from Taito to Namco's various System boards. The reason for this was ease of development and a relatively cheap entry into 3D hardware.

Sony has literally held back the entire industry for almost 30 years and some of you are happy for them to continue doing it.
Since you asked people to mention pre-1996 3D games on PSX, its only just to return the favor and ask:

In what way has Sony literally held back the entire industry for 30 years?

Because that is an interesting question, so id love to hear what you are thinking on this.

@ Kagey K Kagey K : I’m sorry this entire thread just comes down to you being angry about Sony being successful. So basically you are not really looking for discussion here, are you?
It is a strange thread. Usually OP is not like this from my memory.

Just your intro sounds like a fanboy looking for fake ammunition to try to bring the leading console seller down.

I'll make this easy though. What has Sony done?

-Invest in single player games when every one besides Nintendo tried to write them off as a profitable model. Microsoft was on the mp train hard and if we left it at tht we wouldn't have the great sp games we have now.

-The most innovative peripheral in gaming and definitely a new way to play, yup we are talking about PSVR. The only true VR solution on console and actually works well. Ppl try to write it off because it's on PC but so? Pc and consoles are different spaces and when no company wanted to introduce it to consoles or just couldn't in a valid way, Sony sure did. Great gaming.

-let's not forget tht although Microsoft started games with Gold and Sony copied with psplus, it was Sony who came with psplus and offered guaranteed free monthly games then Microsoft copied tht model.

-Make sure we have a steady stream of different and some innovative games instead of relying on rehash after rehash. While other companies relied heavily almost every year on their staple ips, Sony in last two generations made sure they invested in games such as Lbp, Dreams, Heavy Rain, Detroit, Tearaway, Ghost of T, Resogun, Gravity Rush, Astrobot, and any others.

Give developers freedom to create their vision and change even established ips or evolve them. Also acquire and add teams to established studios. While most companies rely in a tried true formula and don't like to to far away from what they have initially created in their games, Sony as a company fostered change and allowed devs to pursue them. That's how we got the gems of Horizon Zero Dawn, New God of War, Uncharted more open (for good or bad). To the point companies like Microsoft after the success of these new/evolved ips quickly got on the PR horn to state they too were allowing devs to have more freedom and were acquiring and building more studios.

There's alot more but I guess I'll stop there :).

OH hold up!!!! I see I'm wasting my time with you your full fanboy, trolling in this thread. I think your Def an Alt account or part of the voost brigade lol 🤣🤣🤣

Guys wrap it up their is a fanboy narrative here, you won't win 😭😭😭

No, Sega was pretty terrible too, they required third-party games to be an exclusive license of Sega in order for them to give you a development kit. Big publishers were able to, of course, wiggle their way out of it but smaller developers couldn't which led to a massive case. Sega v Accolade. Accolade had found a way to turn regular consumer Sega Genesis into a dev kit and Sega sued them but ultimately lost because the 9th Circuit court ruled that Accolade had a legitimate reason to jailbreak Genesis since Sega won't give them a dev kit without signing an exclusivity license.
