FFVII: Remake Trailer

His character design is nearly a photocopy of the original design found in the manuals. No idea what you're talking about.

The realistic look makes him look too feminine. I'd prefer a stylized anime look.

Looks more BTS than Cloud.

As someone who played FFVII at launch and LOVED IT ... not sure how I feel about this. I'm kinda leaning towards just watching the condensed movie version on Youtube ATM.

Meh, I would rather have Final Fantasy VIII and Final Fantasy IX remastered. I would gladly settle for Legend of Dragoon remaster, as long as it doesn't turn out as shitty as Secret of Mana remaster.

A good amount of her dialogue towards Cloud in the game uses exclamation marks which implies she perks up around him or is excited to talk to him. "Have fun" works IMO.

This is wrong. She does use it in 25% (13 instances. Percentage might be less, as I think I missed 5 or so boxes where it wasn't used. and I can't bother checking. If judged by sentences, the percentage plummets even further) of total dialogue boxes that can be related to Cloud. However, very few of them relate to excitement of talking to Cloud. Some of those 13 are directed more at the group of Cloud, Tifa and Barrett (on the train, 3 instances, because of the alarm going off). Some are imperatives (ordering Cloud/Barrett to push the button in the elevator), some are due to her being mad at Cloud (sarcastic "Sure!" and "Oh, stop it, Cloud!"). One is her being rescued by Cloud at the reactor (Thanks!). Some are exclamations (saying "Oh no!" because of making a mistake).
That she gets excited wasn't the issue either, but she's not supposed to be a confident and extrovert person. She's supposed to be insecure, but also passionately geeky (a lot of the instances are her being geeky). She's also very caring when it comes to showing affection and doesn't try to be direct and taunt. She's mostly expressive when it comes to things that you're normally expressive about and she's equally using it against other people, like her teammates.
Her real use of expressive use of exclamation mark to signify her crush on Cloud is on the first train ride, where it's clearly used in a way that shows her being really awkward because of her crush. After that you have the frustration when Cloud talks about not being personally invested in AVALANCHE and viewing it as a job he'd leave once done.

It might be true in the japanese script, but it certainly isn't in the english script. So there's definitely something wrong with her portrayal in the remake. "Have fun" doesn't fit and the voice sounds different than the voice heard in previous trailer.

This is supposedly a remake, yet, none of the gameplay mechanics of the original are intact. I'm almost convinced Sony asked Square to do this just to boost their stock value with no intent on ever releasing...

I think SquareEnix made the right choice here. Keep turn based combat for the nostalgia factor to please the a few people versus attracting or rework it to fit modern game design to attract the newer generation. There is a reason why this is called a **Remake** not a **Remaster**.

If they made the right choice then why the combat looks generic and uninspired.

Right choice to me means something good no matter if it is turn-based or action.

Square Enix never did action gameplay good... so why now?

Action combat looks like shit.

Like somebody on IGN stream said “looks like somebody got FFXV combat with FFVII story”.

Youre kinda 3 years late from making this comments

We already know this combat system since Thanos only had one infinity stone

I kinda preffered the old look to be honest. Felt more in tone with the gritty origins of the chracter.

Now he looks like one of those jpop boy band singers...

Remember this is tortured insecure dude who literally role played as someone he was not due to insecurity and mako infection.

Barret definitely lost some of his african american features and im dissapointed with that too:

Agreed. He looks too feminine now, and looks like a young version of Glenn Close.

I'll still play it but it continues to look unimpressive IMO

The voice acting seems pretty bad though as a Nomura game I guess it will have terrible dialog to go along with it.

And the combat based on those clips looks like the typical Square compromise, where they try to appeal to both turn based and action RPG fans and make something that's not as good as just a regular turn based or full action RPG

I disagree on Cloud. He's supposed to be handsome in the KPOP way.
Even the original Nomura artwork clearly shows him being rather fair faced and subsequent artworks have shown him as even further fair faced after moving away from the stylized look. That previous Cloud seemed a bit too rough and his hair didn't match well with his face.

I do agree that it seem like Barret lost some of his black features and I would like it to be more like the previous one. And for the love of god DROP THE SUNGLASSES. Make it an optional thing.

I think people are being a bit ridiculous here. In those shots, Barret looks way better Imo, and the Clouds almost look the same except for facial expression and lighting, maybe the eyes differ slightly.

Uh yeah. Let's remake the medium-defining, once-in-a-lifetime classic beloved by millions that has been printing money for more than 20 years and... not worry too much about the nostalgia factor. Surely there are even greener pastures out there.

cool, launching late this year as episode 1 probably. Aka the first third of the game. And then a re releerse on ps5. Followed by the 2nd third of the game late 2020 into 2021.

Looks great and i believe its all in engine visuals both cutscenes and fight scenes. Cant wait for more but i dont see it as ps5 game. Ps4 have amazing visuals these days maybe even better then this.
Wonder they left combat style as original? Why?

The current voice acting is terrible. I love it.

Not sure about Barret, but Cloud, Aerith, and Sephiroth are voiced again by their AC seiyu.

Takahiro Sakurai, Maaya Sakamoto, and Toshiyuki Morikawa - all three of them are extremely popular, and amazing anime/game voice actors.

Yea I liked that one too. Everyone thinks turn based is dead for no reason other than SE said it was during the critical peak of a series that hasn't been good in 15 years. Seems like maybe it's worth rethinking.
Nobody says turn based is dead. It has become niche.
DQ and Persona are pretty niche in the West, despite their popularity.

Being niche isn't even a bad thing, but times have changed.
Even Nomura explained this. He wants to make the FF VII that would have been released for the first time in this day and age.
Not the exact same game with a graphical update.

SE will anticipate losing a couple of potential sales over the change, but those will be insignificant.

Very pretty, outstanding graphics. I wish they made a more complex battle system based on the original but too late for that I guess.

The art changes and overall tone makes it more of a Crisis Core sequel than a Final Fantasy VII remake.

Meh, that doesn't look too hot.

The trailer could as well be a trailer for an action game like devil may cry or something. The battle system seems all hectic and unpredictable like ff15, style over substance. I'm not really impressed. It shows that they've put a lot of work into the game, but at least in this trailer, it doesn't seem as if they were able to catch the essence of FF7. I wasn't expecting them to be able to do this anyway, so I'm not really disappointed.

Where does it say that a remake has to a 1:1 copy?
They've even said it would be a complete reimagination updated to today's standards way back when they started talking about just the idea of a remake, back when they showed the PS3 tech-demo.

You must've been absolutely delusional to think it would be turn-based all this time. lol

Meh. I´m concerned that after all this time they still have only showed one area. Combat system looks whatever.

Also if they censor Tifa´s rack there will be severe consequences.

They said on twitter that they already have release plancs and will tell them basically in June. I think the first part will be a 30+ hour Midgar session.

Who cares? What's the difference? The point is that SE's stated rationale for not going turn-based is idiotic. They could make it a rhythm game or a kart racer or a real time strategy game and it wouldn't matter in the slightest, because nothing about the FFVII remake will ever be "niche". This is a solved problem. You put Cloud on the box and tell redditors to like it. These people bought FFXII twice; I promise you they aren't gonna blink. And before you protest, keepi in mind that SE already behaves as if this is true. There's been zero continuity of style or gameplay in the series for over a decade now, because at this point it's just another brand. It's Hello Kitty for videogames and I'm not even talking about spin-offs (although I could, because they're endless); the main numbered series post-FFX has seen every substantive atom of Final Fantasy surgically extracted in favor of spineless trend chasing. What's left is the iconography: Chocobos and Ifrit and Buster Swords and anything else you can put on a t-shirt.

And to state the obvious, FFVII wouldn't ever be released in this day and age, which is the only reason to be excited about a potential remake! If it's just gonna be some fucking other game, why would anyone care? I'd rather they just made something genuinely new, although I have no faith in their ability to do that either. The main difference between FFVII and FFVIIR isn't even the combat system, it's that one of these games was so unimpeachably good on its own terms that it permanently altered everyone's idea of what a video game could be, and the other is a totally inevitable cash-in on the safest possible bet in the history of the medium. And if that's the route they're going, why not just do it right?

Wonderful post, right in the feels. The characters LOOK worse then 3 years ago. Cloud now looks like a whiny bitch, afraid of the world. In the first pic (from the old trailer), he has that confident look in his eyes, in the two other pictures from the new trailer he looks as if he is afraid of the world. I swear I really hate nomuras work. He is so incompetent on all levels, as an art desginer, as a project manager, just aweful.

I will buy the game anyway though, just to have it as a reminder how great the original ff7 is.
