EA prepares technology for next-gen consoles.

Speaking during the publisher’s fourth quarter earnings call, COO and CFO Blake Jorgensen said the company has tried to prepare for the arrival of new consoles by creating an easily modifiable engine structure.

“In terms of the new consoles, we’re still in the discovery phase around what exactly that means, but we’ve tried to build our basic engine structure so it can be modified for new consoles or new technology fairly easily versus having it be built from scratch,” he said.

“That’s part of the reason we went down the path of trying to build Frostbite as one of our major engines inside the company.”

While the arrival of the first generation of HD consoles proved costly to publishers like EA, Jorgensen said the move to PS4 and Xbox One was relatively inexpensive in terms of research and development costs, and he’s hopeful that’ll be the case again with the upcoming console generation.

“If you go back many years, going from Gen 2 to Gen 3 was very expensive, but some of that was driven by it was the first time we went to HD versus non-HD in the games themselves, as well as going from still [being on] on very customised boxes”, he said.

“When we went from Gen 3 to Gen 4 our costs actually didn’t go up at all and that’s because the boxes were designed on more standardised chipsets. You didn’t have the HD problem, you were already there, and I think we just got better as we had better technology.

“And so our focus is on how we try to minimise the cost going to the next generation,” Jorgensen continued. “We’ll know more in the next I’m guessing two or three quarters as we get closer to exactly what’s going to be out there, but our hope is that there’s not a big impact.”

Looks like goddamn Frostbite will ruin more games and mental health of even more developers. Fuck EA and fuck Frostbite even more.

if i remember right..Frostbite was the engine used for BF Bad Company and BF Bad Company 2? WTF happened? those games were good...then Battlefield just got worst and worst... which means the engine was good....then became bad...

They say new engine, we assume graphics engine. In reality its an engine tied to a giant dick that EA uses to fuck you up the arse while collecting all of the money that falls out of your pockets. This new engine is called EA; Extracted Anally.

Dont worry though, they sell lube for 100 in game credits. 10 hours of fucking is equal to one EA point. Or act now, to buy lube for real world cash at the low low price of your soul and decency.

EA, it's in the shame.

EA is a Big Liar... i mean .... not even this trailer seems a great graphics... seems to plastic and artificial.

hopefully they'll upgrade their development tools and pipelines for this as well. I have heard horrible stuff from some people, that are not from DICE, complaining about Frostbite's toolchain.

4K Lootboxes I guess. EA can fuck right off at the moment honestly. They need to do the capcom to get me interested in their games again. They need to show that they are able to create good games and not slot machines.

I don't think there's any chance of that happening. All Multiplayer games from EA are slot machines, all single player games are fucking terrible.

My last roll of the dice with EA is DA:4. Inquisition was pretty sub-par for a dragon age game, but it was fun fighting the dragons.

I never understood what was so difficult about moving from SD to HD when HD resolutions were always available on PC. Or they just refer to the general graphical leap with the wrong expression? Can someone explain?

Hm, maybe start on a new engine well suited for games that are not Battlefield or FIFA.
Everyone wins because even if EA doesn't launch with RPG titles, for example, they will still have FIFA.

EA you can afford to build a new engine from scratch. That or fork Frostbite and have your relevant team overhaul from the ground up. Please the last thing we need is devs constantly saying that their tools are partly to blame for the games they make.

Short term, maybe the only profits you make come from FIFA but long term, you are churning out games en masse of different variety.

And forcing it on our studios even if it’s not working with the type of game they’re developing.

Nope, sorry. Can’t act happy because they’ll go next-gen with the same disgusting practices if not harder

I've always absolutely hated the "gens" designation. Primarily due to nobody really being able to agree upon what the gens should be called. And the issues raised its ugly head again in this thread and OP.

Frostbite showed its potential fully in SW:BF 2015 - this game looks like nothing else on the market to date.
No wonder EA wants to push it everywhere they can.

I'm pretty sure they're preparing next-gen lootboxes for their next-gen half-completed games. Followed by next-gen bad practices and some next-gen firing personel for minimizing the costs.

Doesn't matter much if they don't produce good games. I don't even consider buying EA games anymore. The lack of quality control and the lack of variety (everything being converted to "Live Service").

I forgot EA doesn’t count gens the same way we do. What’s their gen 2 to 3? By the sound of going to HD I’m guessing they mean going from Gen 6 to 7?

So they're basically coupon-ing their way into next-gen after fisting millions of people's arses for the best part of the decade.

I'm in.
