it's really impressive the Switch was able to outsell the PS4 since it was released in 2013.

between the censorship shit Sony is doing, and the Japanese gamers loving their handheld, Sony will need to do something to fix their image

They won't. They'll rely on the american market because nobody here cares about japanese games. Those games are disgusting pedo perv garbage for incels and neckbeards. Real gamers play games like mortal kombat or horizon zero dawn to mutilate fully clothed women and celebrate feminism.

Whoa. I definitely wasn't expecting that! Like at all! Not even one bit! A handheld beating a home console in Japan? Nooooo waaaay.

Ok I'm done being a dick :p
Good job Nintendo

For a culture you knew was so deep in gaming growing up nothing surprises you quite like the first time you walk into a japanese games store to find those isles bigger than entire gamespots dedicated to Vita/Switch/DS but then the PS4/Xbox sections are nearly non existent.

PS2 was the peak, and after that its been downhill for console sales in that country. At least you still get the isles and isles of megadrive and SNES games to keep you company in Book Off & Akihabara.

Out of the 100,000,000 PS4 units that Sony has almost pushed, only 8+ million have been in Japan? That is an incredible stat.

nintendo cracked the formula i think....i console thats cheap...has great games and can be enjoyed portable or in the home
gonna be interesting to see if streaming takes off as it would negate the power requirement and drive down cost considerably making Nintendo a juggernaut....you can see why MS is being best buddies with them

Sony has abandoned the Japanese market since the PS2 lifecycle ended and nobody should be surprised by this. if anyything am shocked it outsold the ps3 in japan (i think it did)

That's good news for Nintendo, but it doesn't change the fact that Japan game sales have cratered compared to 7th gen and earlier. The JP market went from roughly 85 million lifetime hardware sales in 2009, to about 45 million in 2019 so far. Not exact numbers, but it's still about half of 10 years ago.

PS2 was Sony domination, and the last time home consoles ruled that market. But 7th gen had a monster handheld in NDS, a big handheld with PSP, and the Wii that at least started off strong. Even Xbox 360 had a noticeable presence in game stores, for the first and last time. PS3's sales were disappointing compared to PS2, but the JP market overall had an even spread despite domination from handhelds.

it has to do with the fact that japanese games cratered. there are almost no games being made these days. thats just the truth. its a few AAA titles. and some indies

the heart of japanese games were JRPGs and character action etc. those are mostly gone.

Weird isn't it. Weird to us but not them.

I'd love to be there for all the retro stuff.

What games does the Switch have there that's moving so many consoles? Really don't get the appeal and mind you I own one with like 6 games.

Splatoon 2, Mario kart 8, pokemon, Mario party and Mario odyssey are huge in japan.

And again, the appeal in Japan is that it’s a handheld.

I mean it's probably more than any other single country save America.

Portable is big. I regularly see groups of kids sitting at a table playing it.

It helped Sony that they launched in 50+ countries on day 1, while XBox only launched in about 13. That was the height of stupidity on Microsoft's part.

A hardware aimed to portable beating a console hardware in Japan.

Shocked.

In the actual circumstances of the Japanese market PS4 did better than expected while Switch still has a long path to merge Nintendo probable and console sales in Japan.

3DS was selling better what the same period.

Impressive but not that mindblowing when you consider that the Switch can be seen as the follow up to both the WiiU and the 3DS and hence taps into to markets.

Congrats on nintendo, this is really impressive but the ps4 sales are kind of sad in japan. You have to think Sony is rethinking letting nintendo have the whole handheld market like this. I have a switch, i do like it but I've always preferred sony handheld since their introduction. We need another playstation portable.

Can somebody tell Atlus, please?
I also would like to see both Persona and Catherine on Switch but in other hand Nintendo is getting SMTV which no other console is getting.

As much as i love Persona, Shin Megami Tensei is the real....

Well, it would be nice of Atlus just embraced multiplatform development in general. So that the Switch could get Catherine and Persona and the PS4 could get SMTV! But yeah, I really hope that we get some SMTV news at E3...

Original Catherine was very rare case for Atlus making games for multiple consoles, for some weird reason they only make their games exclusive for one system.

Mobile is pretty big there so it’s not surprising. Japan is constantly moving away from traditional consoles.

An accomplishment I suppose, but also a hollow one given they had to combine two markets to do it. They lost their DS business to make the Switch viable, while PS4 relied strictly on the console market. It's still an accomplishment for Nintendo, but it's not the same as it would be had the Switch become successful with the same metric.

The Japanese are an odd culture. An american game company can't be successful there and they love their on the go consoles.

Yeah, I don't understand that either. I don't buy the whole "Sony bought platform exclusivity for Persona" argument. When Sega (Sammy actually) bought Atlus (Index actually), I thought "Great! With Sega behind their back, maybe they can finally start development for multiple platforms! Sega know how to do this." Oh, well...

I wish I was fluent in Japanese there's amazing bargains to be had with the games. Didn't stop me filling up an entire suitcase worth of N64 and earlier controllers for $1 a piece from a flea market but. Found some amazing console hard carry cases to just really didn't have the room :( Recommend everyone to try and get their at least once in their life.
