VR is a fad and will never take off

Currently VR is selling approximately 3 million units per year with all of manufactuerers headsets' COMBINED, that is lower than the sales of the Vita, Wii U, Gamecube, OG Xbox or Dreamcast. I have been hearing about this VR boom that's supposed to happen for 3 years now and still nothing, will VR ever get good games? will VR ever grow in huge numbers?

When will VR fanboys admit it's a fad that's going to come and go like a fart in the wind?

When will Fluzer make a quality post/thread? The world may never know.

VR is a peripheral, not a dedicated system. To use it, you need to either have a powerful PC or a PS4 and then buy the peripheral itself and the games that run on it. Comparing it to a stand alone console platform is beyond silly.

If it's a fad why are more and more headsets coming even after the sales are known? 2019 has more headsets than ever coming out. You should email all those multimillion dollar companies and tell them what you're discovered. They probably have no idea man and you could save them millions!

It's the ultimate peripheral if you ask me. Up there with voice automated commands and buttonless keyboards. Mass Effect 3 had voice commands with the Kinect, but who really cared enough to utilize it? The Kinect sounded like an amazing thing, but there wasn't enough satisfaction to using it. The hololens could revolutionalize the way we use technology, but not everyone is throwing their wallets over to buy one. VR is a game changer, but we aren't there yet.

I don't think there are any groundbreaking experiences. There are probably a ton of very fun games, but you don't have to have one. They release Fallout, Doom, and etc for it. That's cool, but it isn't exactly evolutionalizing everything.

I wouldn't go so far as to say it's a fad not worth investing in. I'd buy one if I could. I just don't need one right now.

Thanks for the info OP. I didn’t know.

I think it's amazing that 3 million people per year are willing to pay hundreds of dollars to strap some big visor/helmet to their face. It makes me think, what the hell are they seeing inside those things to warrant all that money just to be inconvenienced?

Hmmmm.

Kinect sold 29 million and you needed an Xbox 360/Xbox One to use that. That is outselling all the manufactuerer's headsets combined.

We're still getting new game announcements for PS VR too. First party support for the PS Vita and Dreamcast didn't even last three years.

We should just keep this a secret guys so that Sony doesnt stop supporting it. I really think the OP is on to something big and Sony has no idea.

KInect sold a ton, and pretty sure nobody wants anything to do with that Xbox gadget.

Nobody even cares about the Wii waggle motion controls and all motion gaming last gen sold a lot more than VR. People tried it and disbanded it.

While announcing Kinect's discontinuation in an interview with Fast Co. Design on October 25, 2017, Microsoft stated that 35 million units had been sold since its release.[10] 24 million units of Kinect had been shipped by February 2013.[173] Having sold 8 million units in its first 60 days on the market, Kinect claimed the Guinness World Record of being the "fastest selling consumer electronics device".[174][175][176][177]According to Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter, Kinect bundles accounted for about half of all Xbox 360 console sales in December 2010 and for more than two-thirds in February 2011.[178][179] More than 750,000 Kinect units were sold during the week of Black Friday 2011.[180][181]

And about how much of that is from the 8 months of being a forced pack-in with Xbox one in terms of sales?

On top of that, I bet once the Kinect was taken out, sales for that model dropped like a rock (there’s a reason it was quickly discontinued and never redesigned for the S)

Even if kinect sold 50 million it wouldn't matter. VR is growing steadily, slowly yes. Kinect saw a massive surge and died in months. Months, think about that. Imagine showing those two sales charts to Investors. Kinect sales chart showed doom and gloom despite the surge. Even if VR is selling less, investors are pouring money into this for the same reason. Steady growth. Another thing, kinect was packed in with all sorts of bundles and in incredibly cheap compared to real VR.

Then you couple all that we the fact that most still haven't even tried VR yet and the headsets are still cumbersome. It's only going to improve by magnitudes and get cheaper. Theres no stopping it.

To be fair, MS said it sold 35 million Kinects (from my post above). 360 and Xbox One sold a total of maybe 130 million units? That's roughly 25% penetration.

Add up all the VR sales between Oculus, VIVE, PSVR, compared to the user base. You got a penetration rate of probably 2% tops. It's easier to grow off a low base. As you said Kinect flew off the shelves fast and died. NO different than Wii. It sold more than 360 and PS3, yet by maybe 2010 or 2011, it suddenly sold less than MS/Sony systems. I think almost all of Wii sales happened by 2010 tops.

Imagine if we never made the jump to 3D graphics because consoles that came out before PS1 and N64, like the 3DO, had failed? The mindset that we should give up on something because it isn't massively successful? It would be a far less exciting industry.

I know that. It was not my point though. Kinect wasn't uncomfortable, neither was Wii. VR is literally strapping some huge device to your face with wires coming from it. That's on another level of invading personal space. Not only that the price is higher for VR yet still millions and millions dollars are continually invested in it on new iterations despite previous "failures"

That’s usually how technology evolves. Iteration upon iteration. The fact they keep making them would make it obvious it’s not a failing enough for people to be disinterested.

Also comfort in this sense is subjective. I never had an issue with the idea of the headset or cables, especially with the psvr and vive.

And this is exactly my point. You and I might not complain, but alot do, and even some of those people pay hundreds to experience the tech, some even with serious motion sickness and they just deal with it. That speaks volumes.

And Iron Man guys, fucking IRON MAN. Let's not force VR into death until we play this at least :)

I love that VR is getting a huge Marvel exclusive. It really shows how much Sony believes in this and I really think it could help push a million or so units by itself. The impressions are super positive.

I couldn't care less about it's success, but I don't see myself wearing a freackin headset in order to play a game, holograms, if they ever make them, are gonna be the next big thing.

Can a mod change my titie to "VR gaming is a fad and will never take off"?

VR itself is very useful, just not in gaming.

VR gaming will kick off when vr input tech improves. Haptic gloves, suits, 360 treadmills, etc.

For now yeah Vr is dominated by social apps.

I don't understand why you dislike it so much, if you don't want it just don't buy it.
Why discourage others from trying it? What harm did it cause you to warrant so much disdain?

Cause I don't want it to become the main form of gaming in the industry or taking away from flat screen gaming.

If VR gaming takes over, we will have only Sony to blame. Don't let it happen.

Oculus has a better chance than anyone to make VR mainstream(ish). The new products coming out at the end of the month are genuinely very good. Shit I might have even bought a Quest at the end of the month if you could upgrade the internal storage with a SD card.

People still think they are gimmick toys that you use for a bit, freak grandma out by putting her on a VR rollercoaster then putting it back in the box and forgetting about it.

I also still maintain the immediate push for room scale was a mistake that has put many people off from buying into VR because they don’t have the space for it.

i think VR is cool but it has a long way to go before it becomes mainstream. right now it's just something for hardcore PC enthusiasts with money to burn. Sony + Oculus are doing a good job of trying to get it into the hands of more people but even then it's still expensive for a lot of people. also it doesn't help there isn't many big games with support. alright maybe Skyrim, Doom, Fallout but the majority of titles are just cheap indie games.

i'm not against VR. i would love it to take off but right now it's just not affordable and honestly the tech still isn't that great. maybe after another generation or two it'll be where it needs to be.

It won’t really take off big time until the headsets are wireless and really lightweight.
and are more affordable. a PS VR is ~£250-300. a playstation slim is ~£250 and a pro is £350. so you're paying just as much for the VR experience as the console.
on PC i guess it's not as bad. i mean, £400 for the new rift is reasonable for enthusiast PC owners. i paid £400 for my monitor, £750 for my GPU, so yeah i'd happily drop £400 on a vr headset. however of course the rift s isn't the best specced headset. the new valve index is £920 for the entire set up. that's just really for people with money to burn.

So you're scared. I guess you don't believe anything you've said here.

No because companies are forcing it despite the horrible sales. I fear all companies will adopt an exclusive VR strategy to their gaming direction because it's far cheaper to make games for VR than regular flat screen gaming.

If sales are horrible, then you have nothing to worry about. Companies aren't going to want to lose money just to force tech on you. VR will exist alongside flatscreen gaming it won't be replacing it.

Well that's dumb and not going to happen.

AS a big support of VR, unfortunately I agree with the OP. When the VR headset is more lightweight like in fantasy....

Love my PSVR but only in limited doses

VR headsets have the potential to become self-aware and mind control people.
VR will be the ultimate destruction of mankind.
I see where this is going. I've put the pieces together.

1. PS4 uses Blu-Ray
2. PS4 has VR
3. Blu-Ray transmits detrimentality into the VR headset
4. Apocalypse waiting to happen.
5. A lot of people on PC don't have Blu-Ray drives.
6. VR headsets for PC have a nano unseen blu-ray drive with a secret nano disc in(can't see the drive)
7. VR on PC also infects your mind with detrimentality.
8. Xbox doesn't have VR.
9. Xbox Controller has a nano machine blu-ray drive as well. Blu-Ray nano machines enter your body when touching an Xbox controller
10. Detrimental apocalypse for all of mankind
11. We're fucked.

I truly believe VR will fade away for a while but will come back again.

VR will never replace regular gaming until it becomes just as easy to use as a TV. Nothing about putting on that headset currently is "relaxing". It needs to be just as convenient as putting on a pair of glasses and headphones.

We're a long way off that.
