Samurai Shodown coming June 25th

If you buy the game before June 30th, you’ll get the season pass for free!

According to SNK, this Season Pass will cover the first six months of DLC content for Samurai Shodown, which includes 4 new fighters.

This “101 trailer” does a great job on getting players up to speed with series history, general gameplay concepts, and the brand new Dojo Mode that lets players create, fight, and upload “ghosts” that match their playstyle.

That's a great idea giving the season pass out to early adopters, I was already in but that's awesome news.

Edit: I wonder if PC version will still get this offer when it releases.

This might be a good pick for me. Hopefully it's not full of complicated / infinite combos.
SamSho is not, is more about footsies, it’s simple but the hard master having in you gut what to do, well placed slash as a counter is equivalent a medium combo of a street fighter game or KOF

Gifting the season pass for first week purchase is very nice indeed.

Though I do need to see the full feature set and especially how well the online functions. Luckily there's enough time to find that out before the season pass period...passes.

Yes I've played a handful of SamSho versions. I just don't want to be disappointed by seeing another great brawler go the way KOF XIII, SFV and MvC3 went. I consider myself seasoned but I can't land good combos on those games anymore because imo they are badly constructed and too flashy.

Or maybe I'm getting old. Betting on that right now. Haha.

Hopefully they do the same for the later PC release. I’m eager to try this out but will have to wait on that version.

They already added those combos unfortunately. The rage meter can also be sacrificed into a heavy damage dealing super combo that pros can already combo into. It's fucked but that's just how fighting game players like it now, flashy comeback shit.

Yes 100% agreed. They are too aimed for pros. I don't have time anymore to train so I could use some extra frame here and there.

You can't land combos because they are too flashy? Ok lol
See. Used to be a beast in MvC1 and 2, but fighting games tend now to have super compressed frame action and complicated inputs (see KOF XIII combo list for example or SFV challenges). I wish we could have more frames to deliver badass combos without the possibility of infiniting them. Old fashion.

Most likely a day one pickup, though my expectations are in check. Character gameplay diversity and visual distinction are a huge deal for me at this stage in fighting games, so I'm s bit worried on that front. Either way, it looks decent enough, and I'm just glad to have another 2D fighter outside of Street Fighter with actual animations and not snappy chopped up messiness.

Interesting. I was never good back in the day, wouldn't call myself seasoned at all. I have only started trying to learn these things seriously in the past few years but I've played a ton of fighting games going back to SF2. I go back now and try the older games, and it feels to me like the execution requirements are much stricter compared to something like SFV. I'm just not as consistent with my execution on basic stuff in whatever older game I try now. I should try MvC2 again though, I always remember it as being really tough, but are you saying the execution is easier? You had larger windows for combos?

Absolutelt. The windows for combos are much larger than SFV. I liked it better. Or I may have lost my abilities. Either may be true.

I haven’t been into Samurai Shodown since the early 2000’s. This looks really good though and makes me want to get back into the series.

Preordered!
The game is installed (19,8 Gb on Xbox one X), almost one month before release, i guess there will be a day one patch.

There is Fatalities in the game?

Not as such, but there are Supers I believe that can end with the other character being sliced in two, these finishers existed in the old games I believe, but they're not quite on the same level as fatalities, very little emphasis on gore.

Tam Tam looks like a ton of fun. I think so far it's between the raven ninja Yashamaru and the pirate babe Darli Dagger.

I definitely plan on get Samurai Shodown and I’m looking forward to it, but I hate when they unveil dlc characters and content before the game even comes out. At least let people get used to the game before waving dlc In their face showing they are holding content held back. Didn’t mean to derail the thread or anything, but it’s a trend that annoys me.

Always jammed with Galford in the old SS days--looking forward to it.

And yes, the DLC-fication of characters in fighting games is a trend that needs to die.

What's the best way for fighting games to release new characters?
Add 2 or 3, along with feature updates and rebalancing, and call it a full-priced sequel?
That's what happened in the 1990s.

Hoping to see more fan favorites.

At least the season pass is free with preorders.

Normally I would agree with you, but yeah, the fact that they are giving the season pass away with early purchases kind of makes these reveals decent ads.

Nobody really enjoyed buying a full priced game to keep up with things, and it basically makes the last game completely irrelevant, does anyone play SF3 NG or 2E anymore? It's probably not the best way now that they have the ability to deliver content piece by piece and offer balance updates, something not possible back then.

I don't like DLC, but it's probably here to stay for fighting games. I think the best we can hope for is them not gouging us too much, and maybe innovative stuff like what SNK is doing here by giving away the first pass to early buyers. I'll once again give Capcom props for the idea of the fight money system, they've sort of bungled it, but for a while it was a good pathway to free DLC content. Stuff like that will ease the pain I think.

So much about this seems awesome but I just can't get past the garish over-contrasted aesthetic. It really hurts my eyes. It's like MvsC3 was just on the fringe of acceptable, SFxT was a step too far, and this is like five more steps past that.

I mean, it's not even like high contrast can't work, you just need a stable light source. Here it's like light is from every direction so every individual shape has an independent nonsensical gradient of its own and it's a jumbled mess.
