“You’re the Man Now, Dog!,” more commonly known as YTMND has shut down. Twitter users first noticed the site was no longer accessible on Monday and word quickly spread to forums and other corners of the web populated by those who were heavily influenced by the meme site.

The site was extremely popular in the mid-2000s and, despite advertising troubles that came with hosting offensive content, YTMND turned a profit. During its prime, the site gave birth to an array of popular internet memes of the time, such as Picard Song and Doesn’t Change Facial Expressions.

I am depressed. So, here's one of my favorite memes from the site.

I don't have them saved anywhere. Most of mine were lazytown related because my girlfriend at the time was way into that show for her own reasons. If you saw any of the lazytown ytmnds it might have been hers or mine.

She made them out of love, i made them because it pissed people off.

Man - so of the best memes were on YTMND. End of an era for sure. I hope someone with the financial capabilities is able to bring it back - even if it's in an archived state.

Thank goodness, YTMND is a huge part of web history and it's fun to revisit old YTMNDs you love and discover old ones you haven't seen.

Nothing new on the site has really been worthwhile for ages, so I'm not surprised by this, but it's honestly pretty shitty that they would scrub the site completely and not simply deactivate the ability to create new YTMNDs while keeping the site online as an official archive.

Like I said, this is a huge part of web history, it deserves to be preserved.

I wonder if Whang's recent video on the site had something to do with this? It caused an upswing in interest of the site, but that may have only had the effect of making it too expensive to keep online ironically.





EDIT: So reading the Mashable article it says

Thankfully, foreshadowing the shutdown of your website years in advance has its benefits. Last year, the Internet Archive preserved a full copy of YTMND and will soon make it available on their website.

So it has been preserved in full, I am breathing a HUGE sigh of relief, YTMND means a lot to me personally, it's not just a big part of web history but a big part of my personal history as well, I'm very happy to hear that it won't vanish completely.

So, there's been some updates, mostly bad news but with a bit of a silver lining.

Turns out the site went down due to a technical failure, not on purpose, Max Goldberg said that he did consider creating an archive of the site, which is good, but procrastinated on it and now the technical failure means the database has been wiped, but there are backups.

So it's not impossible the site may come back or at least some online archive will, how does the current archive work by the way, it's something that you download?

If nothing else this has at least brought YTMND way back into the spotlight and who knows, maybe some good could come of it, maybe this will ironically lead to the revival I always dreamed about? (I can dream, can't I?)
