Awesome feature set,so glad Nintendo have put the effort in making a sequel, rather than simply porting the original game over to the Switch.

yeah i'm actually sitting here kinda pissed how good this is, because it's basically the only reason i want a switch now

that's the most impressive amount of content for a mario game ever, nintendo has out done themselves

they even added online pvp to this shit, it's right in my wheel house

fuck you nintendo, just when i thought i was out ...

Hopefully we'll see far better courses this time around than we did with the original. So many half-baked auto-play levels... so many horrid wanna-be Kaizos... so many "lol random" courses. Hard for good courses to rise up from the deluge of awful or lazy crap either in the old system of course discovery. Regardless, this looks much better in terms of level variety and tools, and it was already amazing in the original game.

The online deal is just like with all digital titles, the discount still makes it more expensive than buying physical copies.

This has always surprised me as there is no cost to Nintendo for the box, artwork, game cartridge, and the cost of getting the game to retailers.

One thing I appreciate they did was a proper story mode (Which includes missions) for the more than casual fans who just want to play a Mario game. This was also a widely critique/requested thing fans were asking for the first SMM. So glad they listened.

But when you think about it, Nintendo listened to a lot of requests from fans.

*Co-op Building
*Playing with friends online co-op.
*Slopes.
*More level themes and level theme features.
*More Boss type enemies.
*Night time mode for levels.

I can make a bigger list but the point is, I don't think I've seen Nintendo straight up acknowledge fan requests in one swift swoop as in this game.

They addressed it in the past saying that digital titles offer you the convenience of having the title always available, not being able to lose it, etc... and they are charging you for the extra convenience.

The local co op thing makes sense. You can create a level together on one Switch but you can only do multiplayer on separate screens. Super Mario Bros./Mario 3/World don’t have a screen zooming or players lagging behind get put into bubbles feature. It would be frustrating to play a lot of levels where you race or where you hit switches and have others mess it up, or to be unable to go forward until the last player moves ahead. So the multiple screens makes sense.

Local co op apparently only requires one person to have online, other players can play levels without it.

They took the killer app for the Wii U and made it the killer app for the Switch. I bet this thing sells some Switches this summer.

100% in, even though this releases during the steam summer sale.

Still does not convince me though, and with Nintendo there is no guarantee you will be able to take these purchases over to their next console, like you can with Microsoft of Sony's account system, and then there is still the issue of the cartridge,we are always being told how much they add to the cost of producing games, and how some developers will include an initial download as they do not want to pay for a larger capacity game cartridge,so there is now way digital games should cost more.

I have a feeling all of the Amiibos might not be in this one. Maybe all the 3rd party ones are not in or many none at all.

That was really neat to see all of those in 8-16bit

Look, I do not agree with the pricing of digital goods... we were promised cheaper games as some of the savings would be passed onto consumers (especially as we lose the right of resale and our content can be disabled by the online seller at any time).... :/...

I was not having a go at you,I was just stating my position on the subject,I did not realize you were also against the pricing of digital titles.

The only time we were “promised” cheaper prices was when MS was trying to hype people about their DRM phase.

I have legitimately never heard any of the big three promise anything since.

Not sure if this is still the case but Amazon
Time was giving a year of Nintendo online for free through twitch prime for those of you not wanting to pony up.

No worries, did not take it as having a go hehe, sorry for the tone of my reply if it kind of expressed that. The way digital pricing is handled, lack of ownership and right of resale, etc... are quite disappointing cases...

Not much how the original was but this looks to have a ranking system for created levels so that should help.

I think Amibos are pretty much dead. I wouldn't mind seeing them go to be honest.

They are using them better these days but I still count it as a minor microtransaction.

So, sharing levels online seems to be gated behind the online pay wall....but what I have seen is so fucking beautiful. Maybe Nintendo Online will be my first console online subscription ever? (Probably not, though. Lol). Question is: Do we know whether Super Mario Maker 2 supports local play?

I'm mad that downloading levels is put behind the paywall. So it will be a short experience for me: Just playing the 100 Nintendo-made levels.

It was literally everything I wanted and more. Slightly bummed about water being tied to jungle theme but everything else was amazing!

I’m not sure where NintendoLife is getting that. So far Nintendo has confirmed local co-op stage building, online multiplayer and “LAN” multiplayer, but nowhere two players playing through courses on the same device. AFAICT.

I’d love to be corrected, though.
Well, it might not be that far off to assume that if there is local co-op stage building, then there is a good chance that you'll also have local co-op for playing. But you are right. There's no official info on that, yet. Maybe on the Japanese Mario Maker 2 site? At the latter part of the site, it shows Toadette and Toad playing together with Joycons. My Japanese is far to crappy yet to deduce definitive info on that, sadly (Still learning).

Exactly! It’d be such a Nintendo move to throw in all these other modes and features but leave out the one really easy and obvious thing that they’ve already managed to provide in other Mario titles. Online co-op play and local co-op building, but we don’t dare touch local co-op play!

Sorry, it’s just so maddeningly Nintendo.

Ah fuck. Actually, now that you mention "Nintendo being Nintendo", my confidence took a nosedive, lol. Nintendo could actually do a move like that...

Local play will never happen due to the limitations of SMB1, SMB3, and SMW game styles. In the NSMB games they have screen zooming to accommodate 4 players (something not present in any of the aforementioned game styles.)

The co op and vs online / NAT modes allow for players to be at different sections of the level at once which is why they are handling it that way.

I was able to consistently find incredibly well-made levels in the original game, by following top creators rather than doing random search.

There was also the cool ability to link directly to levels from Youtube etc, and then to send that level to your list from any web browser if you log in. If you used that, you could track down some pretty amazing new content every single day.

The links looked like this: https://supermariomakerbookmark.nintendo.net/courses/CB4A-0000-03B7-7960

I hope they keep that external site functionality, because it made it incredibly easy to integrate social media sharing of levels, via YouTube, Twitter, etc -- and to instantly jump into a level you saw on one of those platforms.

The first Mario Maker really didn't interest me that much, but this is a whole new level of awesome. I love the 4 player coop stuff. Will be so much fun when hanging out with friends.

Was the YouTube feature available at launch? I only remember watching the videos Dashie made when I played the game, and he mostly just did the Kaizo stuff. I know my brother knows of a few more Youtubers who play levels that are usually quite clever over the Kaizo bait ones, I'll probably have to ask him about those people some time soon.

I think you just add the link to your video as an annotation or in the video description. It's not actually a Nintendo-specific feature.

The "bookmark" site that lets you tag levels directly from links anywhere online was added in the second major update, a few months after launch.

Well, yes, it isn't a direct integration with Youtube, but is just a site that lets you link directly to levels from anywhere online, and that lets those who click the links add them to their in-game list for playing (by logging into Nintendo account). It was widely used in videos showing levels, so that the audience could click the description links to play the same levels shown.

Co-op making is pretty cool. That might compensate for the online required. :pie_thinking:

I'm so torn up, Nintendo.

New course themes is cool, and the story mode seems meaty. Maybe it'll be good enough as as standalone, even without the level-sharing.

stages_of_coping.jpg

You can get a bundle for $70 that includes an online membership.

I consider myself a severely cynical, cheap ass gamer and I coughed up the twenty bucks the moment a friend wanted to play a game with me over the internet. Ten bucks? Come on!

Anyway, I'm impressed with the features of this game and am now glad I skipped the first Mario Maker in patience. The lack of local co-op makes sense due to limitations of Mario and I don't care much anyway because all my friends have their own Switch so I guess we'll each get our own screen. This to me is actually better than the screen-zooming chaos of NSMB games.

Actually it hearkens back to Super Mario Bros. DX on GBC, which I played with my best friend using a link cable!

Day 1...

So at E3 they will probably announce some sort of SMM2 world app like Smash Bros.

Also think they will drop SMB 2 style to fit next to 3D world.

Also expect costumes/skins etc...

Nintendo said there is still more to come so there might be other secrets to reveal.

Also wouldn't surprise me if they GAAS this game and provide some content updates (free or paid) over the next year or 2.

This game is going to be huge, I think it can be Mario Kart huge for the switch. In Japan it will probably sit right next to Splatoon and Smash as top selling Switch games.

We heard you. You wanted online multiplayer in a Mario Bros game. You got it, Nintendo fans: Super Mario Maker 2 is everything you want.
Feel the rush as you race against others for the goal. Delight as you jump and dunk on friends online to further your own success. Oh no you're getting dunked into a pit now?

I'm going to hope I can find a cheap used copy of NSMBU Deluxe at some point to serve that purpose. Also, we need a "sad agreement" reaction on this board.

Okay this looks absolutely fantastic. I was gonna get it anyways so I wasn't really even thinking about but all those new power-ups and tools and themes and a story mode with 100 levels and multiplayer co-op and versus...????

Eff me it looks good
