Does the Mario Maker IP negate the need to develop new 2d mario platformers?

Just got around to watching that MM2 direct. SO much awesome content and freedom to do anything. styles. modes. multiplayer. anything.

Having added this "maker" game to nintendos software catalog, do you feel that:

A. you don't need nintendo to make any more 2d marios?

B. nintendo feels like they don't need to make any more 2d marios?

C. devalues any future 2d marios, since its assets and styles have been exposed to the public for free use.

I can't decide if this game, while extremely lovely, hurts Marios overall 2d platforming future.

I believe that from now on Mario Maker is the 2d of marios, since it has single player campaign.

Like, going back to 2d mario without the suite to make your own levels will be a downgrade.

They can still manage to make a new breaking 2D Mario, it only has to be a brilliant idea unlike those 2.5D marios that are not brilliant at all.

It really is a feature-rich package from what I saw, I don't doubt that it will supplant yearly or bi-yearly releases of 2D Mario games. I wouldn't worry about it hurting Mario platformers in the future, OP. Nintendo, whom I love, will find a way to nickel and dime to keep the profit margins solid. I think they are really trying to push this digital marketplace and online service, which is good! Hopefully they continue to make smart moves to stay competitive against Game Pass and PS+

so you dont want nintendo to craft any new cohesive individual 2d marios?

I get where youre coming from how this is nintendos new 2d route, but even though it offers a "Story mode" it breaks immersion and feels like a ham fisted tutorial for the create mode. theres no style tying all the levels together. no unity. sure you have to rebuild peaches castle, but theres no adventure like typical 2d marios have. the goal is to accumulate coins and learn how to the new features work and demo whats possible. granted i'm sure they have nitnendos official seal of quality level design. its story mode doesnt feel enough of a true 2d mario game to replace what people may want.

They can always create new assets and come up with cool new shit to do. It doesn't negate it at all.

its pretty awesome. i got New Super Mario Deluxe and while great, felt it was kind of lacking in number of levels. i remembered how old Mario games had 32 levels, and that number feels like it is shrinking. Super Mario 64 only had 15 levels, as amazing as that game was.

well worry no more cos this comes with 100+ levels, hand crafted by people that go to school to learn how to make Mario levels. this is not even counting the endless levels other people will be making. so damn right i am getting this.

thing is Nintendo can still make their 2D Mario as well, they will just have to pursue a new art style to do it. that they are taking this victory lap with the Super Mario 3D Land styles kind of tells me they are done with that style and moving on. i wouldn't be too surprised if a future 2D Mario comes out w entirely new art design.

I tried -- really tried -- to make a good level in Mario Maker. One that gradually ramps up the difficulty from beginning to end, and includes a couple interesting secrets.

I'ts hard. You have to playtest constantly as you go. I realized that making great levels is a full-time job.

The user-generated levels in Mario Maker 2 will be a lot of fun, in a crazy experimental way. And there will be some gems in there. But it's never going to match Nintendo's mastery of the craft.

I never said that. I do prefer 3d mario, but I believe that from now on, 2d marios will be mario makers. I mean, look at all the tool mario maker 2 has.

If the game somehow lets you do an overworld map (I just had a mind blown moment) anyone could make a mario game. Hell, they could easily add a cut scene maker, and you are done.

Look at overwatch workshop, people are creating smash, flappy bird, everything inside it. It depends how much freedom maker 2 offers.

I hope to god not!!!!!!

There is a LOT of issues with the Switch, but the minute a new 2D Mario appears, I'm there.

I believe Nintendo will shelve the 2D Mario genre for a while I'd say. We won't see another for about 5 years it so I'd say and then I'd assume they've been something else in mind, probably a new gimmick to use it with.

No it does not.

Would you rather have a Ferrari built by Ferrari themselves or from the guy down the street that has all the parts and just put them together? Sure it will look exactly the same. But will never be the same.
But Nintendo are developing 100 levels in maker themselves. All with a range of visual styles and new ideas for levels. As the Mario games are right now it does make newer 2D games redundant. I'd agree with you had Mario maker not included a story mode.

I hope Mario Maker is the future of sidescrollers Mario games.

Nintendo-made stages + infinite user content = perfect package

and much better than a new stale New Super Mario Bros.

Yes and no.

Nintendo's 2D Mario efforts have been pretty cookie-cutter since NSMB DS. They clearly invest all the glitz and creativity into the 3D franchises.

Heck, 3D Mario got the Racoon suit before 2D Mario got it back...

Nintendo could blow us all away with an overhauled 2D Mario title, but they won't. That effort always goes into 3D Mario. I would like to explore a 2D Mario game and see new worlds, but I think Nintendo would have an aneurism if they put something cool (like new level themes or a brand-new kingdom) into a 2D Mario before they put it into a 3D one.

Notice how 3D Mario theme gets 2D-ified and recycled.

Fans will make some great levels, but I think the chance of someday getting a true AAA 2D Mario title from Nintendo is slim to none.

Eventually, I expect to see another 2D Mario game, but for a good while going forward I do think that Mario Maker will be the primary vehicle (perhaps one day adding something like themed DLC level packs) for pure 2D Mario.

However, the 3D series of games has increasingly incorporated 2D elements (on walls, fixed perspective sections, etc) and even entire levels (the New Donk City celebration level is basically an entire stage of 2D platforming). So the 2D essentials will continue to find their way into the main 3D releases in surprising ways.

they would still make a new 2d game Mario game if they had a bunch of new ideas to put into it.

I wouldn't expect one anytime soon considering they just released the Super Mario Bros U port and MM2 is coming soon. I'm guessing we're good for this generation.

yeha, but they just have to add that to the next mario maker... they dont need to make a new 2d adventure all together
Sure they don't need to make a new SMB game altogether. But they have no reason to include a new SMB game with MM either.

Nintendo would rather sell you MM for $60 and SMB for $60 instead of both on 1 cart for $60.

Tears of Nintendo
I much rather play The Thousand Year Door Remake / Sequel / or completely new and unique series of games (like Mario + Rabbids for example) that another bog-standard 2D Mario game. Mario Maker on the other hand, is much more appealing game to me cuz of UGC and an ability to make your own.

I think it pretty much puts the NSMB series to rest, but Nintendo could still theoretically make a really ambitious 2-D (a la Wario Land Shake It) or 2.5-D (Tropical Freeze) style game that simply wouldn't be possible in a Mario Maker game. Something that feels less "constructed" and more organic, either from dynamic level design or particularly gorgeous visuals.
