Eurogamer: Recommended
Sumo Digital ditches the wider world of Sega for its latest kart racer, but for all that's lost a new focus and inventiveness is found.

GameSpot: 7/10
The Blue Blur is back in this fast and fun kart-inspired arcade racer, with a few twists for good measure.

USgamer: 3.5/5
Sumo Digital is back to hit you with that fantastic Sonic Racing action. Team Sonic Racing has a new focus on team-based mechanics, but it ultimately feels like a step back from the excellent Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed. The tracks are great, there's a whole of new customization options, and Team Adventure's challenge courses do well to differentiate the game from its peers, but it's a rebuilding year.

GamesRadar+: 2.5/5
Team Sonic Racing, despite carrying a tidbit of fun, doesn't stand up to other kart racers today

VG247: Unscored
An extraordinarily competent racer

Destructoid: 7/10
In most circles, Team Sonic Racing probably won't unseat Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (or Transformed's ever-enduring legacy if my house is any indication), and that's fine with me. Plenty of folks will enjoy the Sonic focus and many of the tracks would have been fantastic as Transformed DLC. I just wish it wasn't as limited in scope out of the gate.

DualShocker: 8/10
I can definitely feel the sunshine.

MetaCritic: 73%

Ehh, shame it sounds so average. Transformed was pretty good. The CTR remake is just around the corner, at least.

Feel kind the same since I have faith in Sumo Digital and I'm a fan of the first All Star Racing.
However...this game never look like a big deal for me. The more I saw the less interest I got. Tbh I'm kinda surprised it got mix reviews, I was expecting bad ones. So its good news in a way.

Wow this game finally came out. Blindsided me.

But seems like the very definition of a game you get used a few years later as an impulse buy.

Well, if we learned something on some other thread about a game scoring 70ish, is that this game is actually good.

Will get when it gets cheap enough.

I watched the new Digital Foundry video on this game and the sense of speed just simply isn't present at all. Looks so lethargic in motion.

Skipping this, managed to see someone reviewing it and it cannot hold a stable 60fps on any platform. We tried setting the Pro to output at 1080p and it hovered around ~55fps mark still, and on the one x is still gets pretty stuttery on some tracks, and especially when performing the team moves.

Seriously, it's a cart racer with simplistic graphics. Go 60fps or go home. Feels like it's held back by running on a modified version a last-gen engine.

It states to be mixed but it doesn't really have any negatives about the game itself but rather comparing it to Transformed.

Going to be honest here, but I didn't really like some aspects of Transform's gameplay (the flying sections are so boring since skilled players can never catch up or hit one another with the weapons), and it was a very bitter pill to swallow when me and a few guys on the SEGA forums made a poll on who can make it in as DLC, only for S0L to give that DLC to the PC Players, leaving those on the forums pretty annoyed at the outcome. (I enjoyed the game, but not as much as ASR)

It won't sell as well as Transformed in the short term, but I can guarantee that it will sell much better over the months as kids love the Sonic Series and the world it creates. I don't mind the focus on Sonic just as long as we get a sequel to All Stars in some form.

I still have this as Day 1 and will give impressions in the inevitable |OT|.

Bummer, I'll miss Amigo, Ai Ai, Ulala and other characters I loved.

Still, going to buy this when I have the money.

After loving the the first game and really liking the next, this one felt like a giant step backwards with “team-based” bullshit and lost my interest as a result... which is too bad, considering that one doesn’t have to fix what was never broken to begin with.

The performance issues don’t help, either.

I’ll stick with the first two games.

Unfortunate, but expected. The game seems such a step back from Transformed in almost every way, even graphically its barely any better.
Transformed is my favorite Kart racer ever, this is such a shame.

Its an updated version of the same old engine used in All Star Transformed btw as Tom spoke in this DF video.

The lower to mid tier scores are worrying. I had high hopes for this game, because the first one was a great surprise and the second one was good too. This one should've been great.

I didn't love what I saw on YouTube...the look of the cel shading kind of felt cheap. But I was still planning to buy it and probably will. Maybe I'll just rent it first to be safe.

This should have been another Sega racing game honestly. Don't know why they went with just Sonic characters for this.

It's funny, I looked at the reviews in the OP and thought "the scores look decent, and the comments are very positive too", and then I scroll done and...lol

I guess we're operating on the "10=GOAT, 9=very good, 8=good/decent, 7=mediocre, 1-6=absolute trash" scoring system here at GAF :messenger_tears_of_joy:

It was the 2.5/5 review that worried me. I've played and really liked a lot of 6s and 7s over the years, and like the full scale myself. Anything below a 5 is bad to me, but 5 still isn't a good thing to see for a game you're excited about.

I think for a game like this a 6 or 7 is closer to how it would be on a true 1-10 scale rather than how it exists in the minds of most journalist/influencers.

Give it Mario branding or a AAA budget and the score would undoubtedly creep up.

I'm still going to give it a shot, and worst case scenario it's just a fun couch coop game with the wife.

You just reminded me of this old PSA from RvB

I don’t even know why they would make this game. Pretty dumb idea, even if it was fantastic.
I think that was the problem right there, it probably shouldnt of been greenlit. The game obviously didnt have a decent budget behined it, hense who its just Sonic themed, and seems such a step back from Transformed.
In fact i dont know why they didnt just do a 1080p/60 HD remaster of the first 2 games and stuck them on one disk, they would probably of sold more than this game will ironically.

Yeah, the whole rating systems thing is out of whack everywhere, not just here. Anyway, I remember there being a whole thread about it a while back, so I'll shut up about it now.

My main worry was the teamwork aspect not being good, but pretty much everyone seems positive about it, so that's good.

It's funny seeing this review:

It's getting ratioed due to the reviewer being a Mario Kart fanboy and criticising this game and also Diddy Kong Kart, Crash Nitro Kart etc.

Its a Kart Racer not named Mario. You kinda have a ceiling on your score already.

I guess if you are a huge kart fan and don't want/cant get Mario or Crash then Sonic is a decent 3rd choice it seems but won't knock your socks off.

More interested in MK 9. Its been how long since MK 8 launched. You have to imagine Nintendo will at least drop a hint or something. There has to be another MK coming by 2020 ? Latest maybe Q1 2021. Wonder if they will do a MK Ultimate or something? With how much content Nintendo has been packing lately (Smash and SMM2) I think the next MK is going to be insanely packed.

Well that didn’t stop Transformed from being highly regarded as one of last gens best racers with 8+ reviews.

Looking through most of these reviews it just seems more like it’s a legitimate downgrade rather than “oh look, another sonic game BURN IT!”

I'll probably just wait and see how CTR turns out. Hopefully good, but I may have a Switch soon, so I might not need CTR. Lol.

I love Transformed!, a lot more than Mario Kart actually.

We will see how it sells to determine if this was a good move or not.

Would rather have All Stars myself but this could lay the foundations for a future Kart Racer as it could just be a way to free up SEGA slots.

Transformed ran at sub-30fps on consoles, yet this game is criticised for 40-60fps? Seems unfair.

Can't wait to play it, should arrive in the post tomorrow. I preferred the pure kart racing of the original All-Stars racing to the boring boats and planes of Transformed, so this new game suits me.
