Minecraft Earth reveal trailer

Have you ever watched a piece of video game marketing, and think to yourself that the people who came up with the game have no fucking idea what they're doing? Like none. Like they have literally never played a game before, and only seen them on websites and read about them on sales reports.

I dunno bro, kids are gonna go batshit over this. I was showing my 8 year old brother Angry Birds Isle of Pigs, the new AR game, and he was absolutely blown away.

I am 100% convinced this will see a surge of high interest leading up to release, then a dramatic drop as kids realise they can't just spawn 100 blocks of TNT to destroy npc villages. And my God, have you every played on unpoliced public servers? The amount of safeguards they'll have to put in this to stop griefing, pornography, copyright infringement, etc? Kotaku is going to have a field day when this releases.

If only my penis was as big as my GamerScore!
Would be cool only with AR glasses. Having to use a phone will make it pointless.

It could be interesting for people who like the game. The big thing will be material rarity and giving players a reason to continue. Unfortunately the original game had none of that so I don't expect much.

Despite the horrible history of the hololens project that fed into this, and its dishonest E3 demo years ago, I'm still pretty interested to see how this works. My son loves Minecraft and certainly loves to hunt Pokemon outside in Go, plus we have a lot of land around us to run around in. If this works well, it could be very interesting for setting up little hidden virtual constructions in the woods and whatnot.

It would be cool if you can see other people creation (This is likely) and the AR good enough to really solidly overlap with the real world instead of just looking like someone placed an inconsistently scaling 3D model overtop a camera App. The latter point I don't feel confident with.

On another note: where the fuck is the super duper realistic skin pack? It’s been like 2 years since they announced it.

Don't pedos try to get at kids on Minecraft? This seems like it could go in a bad way.

Had this since day one and it's just awful. truly, awful.

Use your imagination and picture what you think "Minecraft Earth" should be.

Maybe a massive earth-style Minecraft map we can all play on in real-time?
Maybe it's a cool way of creating augmented spaces for other people to share and explore?
Maybe it's an MMO rogue-lite with fun gameplay?

It's none of these, and it's so depressing. They have the ultimate sandbox genre to build this upon and instead basically just gave a brand agency a brief of "How can we apply our Minecraft IP to Pokemon Go"

You know those spinny pokemon go things that give you items? It's basically that. You tap a stupid virtual tree that spawns and 'earn' Minecraft building blocks which are given a rarity, so you travel round in a go-cart, tap things and get given a shit like "Dirt (common) x 3" as a reward. There is no persistent world, you can't build anything, it literally just spawns in things you can tap on as you move about, and that's it, that's the "Earth" in Minecraft Earth.

So what do you spend these building blocks on?

You can then buy tiny spaces (e.g. 32x32 tiles) that you can build things on using the blocks you have earnt. But this space doesn't exist globally, it's yours. It's not linked to any sort of geographic location, and folks cannot stumble upon or see it unless you explicitly invite them into it.

So I purchased a 8x8 plot, invited my kids into it, ran out of blocks to build with after 2 minutes then went back to playing Regular Minecraft.

So not only have they completely not done a single meaningful gameplay thing with the geolocation stuff, but they've made the core Minecraft experience worse by limiting resources and adding microtransactions for buying soil.

There are minecraft knock-offs on the iOS store that are immeasurability better and more inventive than this.
