Just the words Makuhari Messe, Chiba induce PTSD in me.
The last time I was there was 2005. I had scored an exceptionally early copy of Famitsu and shared the first MGS5 scans with GAF. Then, as most young Westerns guys do, I ended up celebrating the scoop at Roppongi Gaspanic grinding Japanese girls into the wee hours. Friday was going to be the last day for me at TGS.
From the crack of dawn, it was going to be a cloudless day. As the sun broke out, the temperature just kept on rising, and eventually hit 27C / 81F. Emerging from the Chiba station via Tokyu, I was insanely hung over. As was my Indian colleague, who had been with me at Gaspanic. We tried to avoid the show floor all day, and went to puke into the toilet cubicles. Most of the day, we slept on the outdoors benches nest to Makuhari Messe.
Mid afternoon, I had (got) to head to Haneda to head back home. In a taxi with the white seat sheets, smelling of cigarettes, I opened GAF on my Nokia phone. The top thread was called
Revolution Controller Revealed.
I looked at the picture posted, and read Lo-Volt’s comment - “What the
hell is that. What is that”. I quickly put my phone back to my pocket, and slumped my head back against the hard seat. It was just too much, at that moment.
