Is Sony trying to turn PS4 into a botnet for streaming?

Am I reading this correctly? Are they trying to leverage unused network connected PS4's as servers for streaming by turning on the device, using the owners electricity and bandwidth to provide you with a more localized server?

Why does this sound illegal?

No? Do you understand what "Remote Play" is?
I know what their current implementation is but the way they're wording it in their new documentation reads as if the device will function beyond that and for others as a part of their new initiative.

They're listing how many devices are out there and how they will be the closest access point to "users" framing it as some kind of unified network of servers. This reads beyond "You'll be able to connect to your own system to stream games".

Or maybe that just says that the closest access for any given user is his own PS4? As to why they'd list 100M units sold, of course they would, this is obviously fluff for investors.

I would think that too but it's a broad assumption based upon location, if I'm out of state or country my system would no longer be the "closest point".

I'm telling you this is sounding like some Xfinity Wifi shit where you piggyback on other peoples systems and network connections if you're closer to a free system rather than a data center..

Imagine your playstation being rented by some dudes while you're at work or at vacation and sony gives you PSN credit for loaning out your PS4 to their "Cloud" users. I donno if that would be so horrible. Similar to tesla's autonomous taxi idea.

No. And even if they did anything like that, it is legal, but only with the explicit consent of the user. Just like Windows 10 PCs everywhere share updates among each other, if configured to do so.

It reads more like a blurb for investors. It's basically Sony saying to them "That streaming stuff that is all the rage nowadays? We've got Remote Play and PSNow, you know? So, we're ready guys, don't worry."

Not even current Sony would be so daft as to turn PS4s into access points, without specifically asking the user for consent. That being said, it sounds like a potential security nightmare, as many PS4's are connected to private (home) networks. From a technical point of view however, since the PS4 OS is FreeBSD under the hood, it's not too hard of a challenge. Being a server that handles and manages a good amount of connections is where FreeBSD excels at, as can be seen by Netflix's service.

Um...no....you are the 'user' and the server is your PS4...closer than a central server...just like it is now.

Curious that I just noticed a "DynamiteCop" with similar quality of posts got banned tonight on a certain other site. Eeeeeerie. Sega fans best be on their guard!

Not sure why the fuss around his hypothesis. Is it far-fetched? Of course?

Unreasonable? Maybe, but it wouldn't be anything alien-like. I doubt it would be as effective as having data centers like Google and MS, but would still be a good shot

MS used Kinect illegally for data gathering purposes mostly without consent. No one cried a river over that

Honestly, it works very well as a streaming device. I rented a few films, watch Netflix, HBO, and more often than not Remote Play. I had most of the games that PSNow advertised and I tried it when I got either GoW3R preorder or one of the GoW titles. Played GoW2 via PS Now.

This can mean a lot of amazing features. It'll need some fine tuning, but I bet it'll be an awesome transition.

IMO turn it into a streaming device for all of Sony's platforms. I am actually looking forward to see what Sony has in mind. They'll have libraries from 4 consoles with digital ports on the market. I wouldn't take it away as being a solid answer, be open about it, and let's wait till sony says something.
