World of Warcraft Classic |OT| We're Going Home

So, is the classic beta using a separate client or is it rolled into retail? Also, is it the modern engine being made to mimic the old one or something else entirely? Mostly asking because I'd rather not deal with a 50GB download when I'm only going to be playing a 5GB game. =p

Separate client, it's a modern client with the 1.12 data stuffed in. You need a subscription but with that sub you can play both Classic and retail. You should really watch this panel if you get 45 minutes, it's a fascinating look at how they're approaching classic. Some of that info is outdated now that we know more gory details, but it gives you a good idea.

Managed to log in for a few hours before the stress test spun down. Once people have moved out of the starter zones a little and traffic wasn't insane, it's totally fine. Still plenty of people fighting over every single mob that spawns, as it should be. We even had a party of Alliance roll up on The Den for a 10v10 skirmish, it was glorious.

Edit: New stress test on May 29, everyone who was in the first (and maybe more?), level 10 cap

The download is around 9 gigs. It's the modern engine, adapted for classic, as far as I'm aware. But you won't need to download the full game. As for the client itself, it's standalone, you just have to change it on your battle net launcher as you would for every other PTR/Beta or account.

Edit: Nevermind, it has been answered, my browser didn't refresh properly.

I hope I can get some hours into classic today before the weekend, I still haven't made it out of the starting zone.

Greetings Beta Testers,

Starting on the afternoon of May 24, we will be enabling the PvP Honor System and the Warsong Gulch Battleground in the WoW Classic Beta realms. Beta players are invited to queue for Warsong Gulch from 12:00 p.m. PDT to 4:00 p.m. PDT on Saturday, May 25 and Sunday, May 26 as we try to spin up as many instances of the battleground as possible. While we’re targeting that timeframe to help capture data, players who are logged into the beta will be able to queue for Warsong Gulch at the Warsong Gulch battlemaster in capital cities at any time throughout the weekend.

As a reminder, queuing for Warsong Gulch requires your character to be level 10 or higher.

We have a few known issues related to Warsong Gulch:

  • The Battleground Scoreboard does not currently display Flag Captures and Flag Return statistics.
  • The Battleground Scoreboard stat numbers are misaligned with player names.
Have fun racking up those HKs and don’t forget to submit any bugs or issues that you encounter using the in-game bug reporter.

I'm pretty content just watching a few streams of beta right now so I can go in relatively fresh in August. I keep changing my mind on what I want to do when it hits. Probably gonna be alliance still, but can't decide between dwarf and NE priest. Also starting to lean toward a PvE server to save time. My first server was Gilneas in Vanilla which was PvE, and kind of like the idea of not being ganked constantly (I was almost 30 when WoW came out, and just didn't want to waste time on that, maybe if I was in high school at the time I wouldn't have minded).

If you're concerned that Dwarves will get raid spots over Elves due to fear ward, I wouldn't worry. Priests are going to be in demand no matter the race. Personally I think female Elves look great in the priest tier sets, and priests are one of the only two classes whose tier sets are actually BiS.

Plus, if you do end up playing a PVP server you can Shadowmeld near the elevators in 1K Needles and then mind control people off the top for endless fun.

Mr Nash Mr Nash I never played on a PVP server. I like hearing funny stories about PVP shenanigans though.
I like the idea of PVP servers but I love my Rp servers because the whole community is just better as less shit is talked in chat apart from the one dick head who says "I'm role playing a wanker" and thinks he's clever..

I always played on RP servers too. Worth it just for the naming conventions if nothing else, but like you I think those servers attracted on average more pleasant players.

Race choice is more a matter of sentimentality that min-maxing for me. Can't decide if I want to do pre-Cata Dark Shore or Loch Modan more. It looks like Shadowmeld also de-targets yourself from an attacker in certain situations. I was watching Asmon's stream the other day for a bit and he was testing Intercept against Shadowmeld in some duels and he kept losing his target. Not sure if that's intended or a bug, though. Also, while on the topic of streamers, it's funny to see how many people on the WoW forums are utterly butt hurt that streamers are in beta. =p

Honestly, leveling is so much slower in Classic that doing both is strongly recommended.

The vitriol is outstanding. I love it. The WoW forums have always been a cesspit but Classic has really brought the dregs up from the bottom of the barrel.

That people like Asmongold and McConnell are happy to stir the pot makes it all the more hilarious. =p

I tried, but it's 11:15 here, and it's been 75 minutes. I'm ready for bed. Tomorrow it is.

Man I was so set on doing Warlock this time, now I'm getting urges to do Druid. It's been so long, I can't remember - how was Feral tank Druid in Vanilla? I'm thinking it sucked but I can't be sure about that.

Druid tanks are pretty good at even endgame. You can't tank every fight tho. You can tank probably 80% of the fights and you're even better than a prot warrior on some fights.

Although, be expected to farm pummelers as dps or put on a dress on the fights when not off tanking tho.

I find his streams entertaining, but he does seem egotistical at times.

I do like his honesty.. He's blasting some of the wow forums posters.

That forum is straight cringe right now at the level of butthurt.

Has McConnell ever shown his face before? And no not that fake video. He's such a little cuck I love him.

Classic Beta is overrated. You're better off on a private server. It will prep you better for launch of classic. Private servers are harder. I recommend Elysium Nighthaven. Typically ~700-1000 players per faction, 1.5k-2k total. The playerbase is soooo much nicer than the cesspit that is frequenting the wow official forums.

McConnell moans a bit to much for my liking he's a bit like that Delrith? that angry joe has on his show now and again.. they annoy me, which is ironic because i'm a moaning cunt.

Also I tinker on Lightshope, I think the community is shit personally and can not wait for my RP server :)

Played some more of yesterday's stress test, really not aiming to do anything just get my settings configured early and taking screen shots of them so I can jam everything together quickly while I make the run to Durotar at launch.

Game looks great with everything cranked up to the max (except the new water, I hate the new water). 2004 models and skins with AA, shadows etc. out the ass makes for a strange amalgamation of 2004 and 2019. I've played on plenty of privates and wouldn't mind being limited to the old graphics at all, but if I can get the old assets with polish on, and at 165 HZ? Yes please.

Like Boogy said, absolutely fine but there's a few fights you can't tank. If you put in the work getting the best bear items, someone somewhere will appreciate it and take you along.

Now, if you care about how you look, bear in mind that feral druids won't wear any tier sets, and if you're going for stats over style, warlocks will only wear like 1 or 2 pieces until Naxx. You'll look more like this as a min-maxer.

There was a Duel Tournament with a $2000 prize pool. It was pretty well organized outside of a few trolls, hopefully they can find a better solution for them if they ever decide to do another tournament.
Here's a playlist with all the vods

Here's from a different caster

starts at ~34:48 though he misses a few duels

I'm sad that Cdew didn't win. All he needed was 1-2 lucky procs and it would've been over. But Venruki played very well through and through.

Watched most of it unfold from Staysafe's POV. The drama surrounding this has been hilarious. Certain streamers (Soda) calling for the banning of a few trolls because they were jumping around in a duel tournament. Ridiculous. I'm not saying they weren't being annoying, of course they were, but it's all in the game. Happened in 2004 and will happen in 2019. Some of these streamers and viewers who were calling for blood are in for a real wake-up call when the general public gets their hands on Classic and stuff like this is a regular occurrence. Nothing is safe or sacred. BRD on PVP servers is going to be a battleground of its own.

The GMs handled it perfectly - the trolls did their damage for hours and when it finally got to the point of "okay, really now" they simply ported them to Winterspring, just like back in the day when people would get ported to far-away zones, or isolated cells for a cool-off period, rather than laying down a serious punishment just for griefing.

Later today, we will take the WoW Classic closed beta down for maintenance and we will increase the level cap from 30 to 40. This will allow testers to level up in zones such as Stranglethorn Vale, Desolace, and Arathi Highlands (among others).

To further assist testing efforts, we will reduce the cost to respec closed beta characters. The new cost will be charged in silver instead of gold, a 99% reduction in cost, and will only be applied to the beta test.

We’re also going to open Arathi Basin for limited testing in the closed beta. There will be no templates, so all characters will need to be level 20 or higher to participate. The test will begin on the afternoon of Thursday, June 6.

Please keep an eye on our known issues 3 thread, as well as our growing list of reports we’ve confirmed are not bugs 4. Thank you for your continued efforts in testing WoW Classic!

P.S. Don’t forget to guard the farm.

So, the Classic client was supposed to be up for download 'late today'. Anyone who already has it have a clue as to where I should be looking?
Edit: Found it.

Pardon, was on mobile.
Open your Blizzard client, click on WoW, right above the Play button is a selector marked Version.
Click on it and select World of Warcraft: Classic, then download.

It's on the Battle.Net client with the rest of Blizzard's games, go on the WoW bit and select the Classic beta from the drop-down menu (if you've got an invite).

The stress test isn't the full beta, it'll be up for 48 hours with a level 15 cap, including WSG and DM/RFC. It does specify Americas/Oceanic which is a shame, I'd planned on doing some routing :messenger_persevering:

If you are playing the stress test, remember to feed back on how your experience went to Blizzard, as it'll be pretty important in regards to controlling layering and server stability:

Realm Differences

During tomorrow’s stress test, we plan to experiment with different settings that control the population of players. We plan for it to be a blind test, so we don’t intend to publicize which realms have which settings (or when).

We’d love to hear your feedback on your experience from level 1-15 on whichever realm you choose to test. Was it too crowded, even for a launch day experience? Did it feel too empty or too crowded after you moved to the second zone? We’ll have a dedicated feedback thread for you here in this forum tomorrow, once the stress test has begun. Please give us details about your experience when you submit feedback to that thread, especially which realm you tested.

Thank you very much!

sorry if i missed it somewhere but is there a Gaf guild/server planned for release or is it still to early for all that?

I don't think there will be a gaf guild. Although, Blizzard's stupid ass decision could lead more Euros to quit or reroll on an American server. Probably east coast.

Fuck my sticking spacebar.

It's always been a running joke about GAF guilds because most of the time people will pile in play together for a month, then everything falls apart. I say just get out there in the world and be social. If some GAF members just so happen to wind up playing, great, but there are plenty of other folks who are pleasant to be around that you haven't met yet and could also be fun to play with. No need for an insular, fortified community to form around a forum-related guild. That sounds more like something Era would do.

An alternative is to make one of those in game chat groups. Then it doesn't matter if you play together or not, you've got access to the communities WoW playing arm.

I have very high expectations. I hope to feel that I am playing the best mmo again, the only thing I may wait to change is gold farming, I hate that (so I usually use services like this). But all other old school things I am eager to see again.

i tried current WoW as a warlock to see how different it is, i don't know how anyone finds it fun to play "New" Wow.

I ask myself this yet keep coming back to the game, but I think most of the fun I've had comes from mythic raiding. Since I don't have as much time to play anymore, I'm going to attempt to play 'casually'....so maybe it won't be fun to play for me anymore either. That being said, there is just something about wow that it does even in its current state that no other game can.

Reposting from the game book thread I just bumped, but y'all especially need to see this:

I picked up The WoW Diary by John Staats, who was one of the level designers of the original game back when development started around the millennium. He ran a Kickstarter to get the book made and it's now moved to Amazon (I'm in the UK and had to import it). Even if you're not a WoW player, or even particularly interested in WoW, it's an absolutely fascinating glimpse into the industry at that time. Basically, John kept a diary of notes during his time at Blizzard, not just on his level development work, but on the work of every member of the team, who he'd check in on frequently. It's crazy how small and stitched together Blizzard was back then before WoW's success; messy office, broken chairs, but a total horizontal design philosophy where everybody worked in unison to create the best product possible. Really heartwarming and interesting stuff, an absolute joy to read.

It's a beautiful, large print hardback book with glossy pages containing photos of the Blizzard offices and staff, and never-before-seen screenshots of the WoW dev tools and incredibly early incarnations of the game when it was unrecognisable. I'm only partway through and I already strongly recommend it to anyone who's remotely interested in the process of game development. It's a bit pricey for sure, so maybe wait until it's cheaper or 2nd hand, but don't miss out.

The rumors of an non-oceanic server could be true. I mean they didn't even do a German or French one.

They're gonna fuck this up, aren't they?
