I have been dying to show my design to everyone, but I have a weird personal rule about not showing stuff before a competition lol. I was hoping the contest would be under way this week, but after E3 makes sense. Really looking forward to seeing everyone's finished work!

Nah. I'm all for the feedback. Feedback is super useful I find. It's a good way to just figure things out, and see how they sit.

Yeah feedback can be great, but it can also mess with your head sometimes I think. I've always worked this way, I like to go with my gut.

I never let it mess with my head. I just evaluate it against the concept, in terms of whether it moves the design closer to realisation or not. Once the concept exists, you're merely the conduit to its delivery.

I just prefer trusting my own instincts I guess, I've done this for years and I like to think I have a good eye for design. Of course no one is perfect and things could always be improved, but I think a part of me just wants myself to be the only influence on my designs, for better or worse.

Edit: In fact, the more I think about it, that's almost entirely the reason I don't like collaborative design, I want the credit for a design lol. And in the case of a design contest rather than work for a client or something, to me personally, collaborating almost feels a bit like cheating because I was not the sole creator in a sense, depending on how much other people influenced a design. This is just how I feel about it for my own personal work, don't get me wrong - I would not begrudge anyone for collaborating on designs or think less of anyone's designs because they were the work of more than one brain. I don't think there is anything inherently wrong with collaborative design and in a lot of cases it's probably ideal for getting to the best design for a given purpose, but I've just always wanted to be able to say this is entirely my creation with no outside help. I'm stubborn :messenger_grinning_sweat:

Depends how much you've worked in teams I guess. Given the nature of the design work I do IRL, where I'm picking up and handing off all manner of projects to my colleagues day in day out with frequency, I've learned not to get too precious about ownership. Using people for a sounding board is just second nature at this juncture.

I'd also add that one of the other things I like about just posting work beyond the feedback is just generating some distance from just seeing a design in progress in an application. Back in the day, I'd often stick a drawing I'd be doing on the wall or some such, and just let it breathe for a bit. In this increasingly digital age, we've lost that ability to a large degree, so it's nice to be able to replicate it in some fashion through the process. Just see how a design looks on a tablet, phone or at work on a different monitor all help to inform in terms of the overall.

I hear ya, I think it's definitely important to give yourself time away from the computer and actual building process to review the designs. I just strongly dislike including other people in my design processes for personal work, I feel like I can achieve this breathing time for review on my own. I spend a lot of time nearing the end of a project just glancing/staring at it on various screens/different sizes while I do other tasks, and if something occurs to me to try, I'll jot down some notes and take a crack at it when I'm back at the computer. I try to finish a design with plenty of time left over so I can do this for a few weeks and massage something as close to perfection as I can get it.
