Next year will be better. This is getting to the end of a generation and next year will be something new

I'm a huge Sony fan but saying they won because they didn't show up is like saying that the ones that did show up somehow harmed the public just by being there.

It was a regular E3 (might be the last). Cool games announced, some leaked before and Keanu Reeves was amazing and unexpected. Of course, showing new hardware is always exciting but it happens once every 6 years (3-4 if you count hw revisions).

Personally got what I was waiting for.

Looking at the overall reaction to the various conferences I don't think its debatable whether Sony stepping back was their best move under the circumstances.

The thing people forget is that prepping for E3 is a lot of work and expense. It needs to justify itself as a business opportunity. There has to be a PR upside to it, but truthfully it isn't very strong this time around both as a consequence of the general state of the market and the lackluster content of these pressers.

Did they save money? Of course. Did they "win E3"... Well, never heard of any competition where you win by not showing up.

Sony had nothing to really show off this year, it's why they pulled out and if it was anything like last year, ehh.. Sony would have been meh.

Whatever thy would have showed would have been infinitely better than what Micro showed. Just new gameplay of TLOU 2, Ghost of Ts..., and few other surprises and wire article reveal onstage would have been better. I laugh at ppl tht think thy didnt show up because they had nothing to show lol 😭😭😂😂😂

For doing the humane thing and not contributing to the shit show of E3 2019.

Thanks to you I won't have an hour of my life taken away from me and will go and eat mexican food instead.

Everybody on GAF owes Sony a debt of gratitude for this.

Sony had nothing to show of course they weren't going to show up. You write a love letter for them not even caring enough to put together something for the biggest time of the year. What an absolute joke.

Not a fanboy here. But gotta agree.
Sony won e3 with a causal interview and uploading some videos and tweets.

Speaking directly with chief engineer and being shown sm loading, is more substantial than making a talking head corporate montage. Ironically opening with the same loading comment.

Showing gameplay videos of first dips games like DS and FF7r is huge for the type of audience.

The money saved can add another 8gb of ssd cache.

This also shows the difference in both companies culture i guess. Phil is always trying to show that he is a gamer, while Sony is just relax to being one.

Not sure why people are congratulating them as If Sony’s past launches are anything to go by you are in for a good 2 years of barren first party output for ps5 if they didn’t really have anything to show now...you guys have a real short memory for how shit the output of ps3 and ps4 was on launch...not having anything to show now really does give us an idea on how far along they are development wise for first party.

If you look at the realistic timeline it’s probably going to be Xmas next year ps5 launch’s and you will have a handful of first party stuff on launch and the usual indie and first party remaster fillers padding out the library.

From there you have anything announced at next years e3 outside of launch titles will probably be a minimum of 2 years off and possibly 4 if you look at how many e3s we saw Spider-Man/death stranding/last of us 2/god of war before release...this means most of the stuff you probably won’t be playing anytime soon on ps5 launch meaning your gonna be left with the same gaping hole of releases that would make a Nintendo owner proud.

I suspect your gonna get nothing but 8k remasters of ps4 games with a renewed focus on indie titles for the first couple of years with a couple of big hitters spread out over the first 2 years....just like ps3/ps4

Not really worth congratulating anything.... just the same old crap we got for the last 2 gens

We can congratulate as we know that the first party output will be infinitely more robust and better than Micros no matter the year. That showing of Micro was just abysmal and a veiled showing of multiplats and AA low tier exclusives. I'd take TLOU 2 Remastered on PS5 over any of tht crap shown. From what I remember I enjoyed the shit out of Infamous Second Son which surprisingly still looks better than most games coming out now on Xbox, Drive Club which I enjoyed, Killzone, loved the mp and MLB the show that I'm a fanatic for :) TLOU Remastered I double dipped and lovedddd

On every single system first year or two is slow for the most part. Games don't get made over night anymore so I can live with tht. Shit most games take like four years to make nowadays.

Sony’s 2018 E3 was easily one of the worst I’ve ever seen, between the lame music fillers, long intermissions, and general awkward feel. It was right up there with Nintendo in 2008 as the worst E3 keynote by a market leader.

The year off, if nothing else, will hopefully let Sony plan a bit better for 2020 and the rollout of the PS5. One less keynote, in an E3 year that’s had mostly poor to mediocre ones, is better on the whole.

SONY's reaction after MS E3 2019

I'd give anything to see their reactions or be in their follow up strategy meeting. You know they were watching it. Shu probably walked in laughing playing his switch saying "nothing to worry about we got this"

That was the only E3 from them I didn't like in the past decade or so. Generally I think they usually do better than everyone else at E3. Either way I didn't much care for Microsofts last year E3 either but it was better than this years for sure (this Microsoft E3 was top tier number one spot worst imo)

Sony is being smart and I'm sure when they decide to show off what next gen looks like for PlayStation it will impress. MS was sadly more of the same (shocking to me), Cyberpunk looked great but I was already sold in that and will pick it up on my Pro.

In my opinion this E3 hasn’t been that bad.

I honestly think the ones dissapointed were expecting a next gen blowout, but everyone with realistic expectations knew that wouldn’t be the case.

So far, the worst conference was UBI and I still found 3 games I’m interested in from that one.

Nintendo tomorrow to cap it off. Excited to see what they might show.

TBH my biggest surprise is nobody wants the fall title. It tells me these games were further off then we expected. Next Spring is insanely packed, and there is no way anybody gets through all these games releasing before next gen consoles hit.

Sony being (or not being there) hasn’t affected E3 at all in my opinion, so I thank them for giving me time to game tonight instead of watching another conference.

One may as well dub this E3 The Return of the CGI.
There's a blood pact against showing gameplay making its way.

Well-played, Sony.
Well-played.

Praising a company for doing nothing... fanboys are a strange consumer group.

It's called tactical brilliancy. And, no, I'm not the proud owner of a PS4.

Who says they're doing nothing?
They chose to opt out at this point in time. Do you happen to know their plans for the rest of the year? Next yeatr, Q1? Do you?

Sometimes less is indeed more, especially when there's nothing particularly exciting to show and what there is is probably scheduled for the not so distant future.

But, hey, feel free to dismiss rational praise as fanboyism.

With all due respect.. Fuck Nintendo. Don't even watch their shit anymore.
Meh, I’m going to side with Nintendo on this one, at least they show up and get space on the floor to please the fans, even if they know they have nothing to show and will get thier asses kicked for it.

I can’t imagine how Nintendo felt a couple times after E3 and going home with thier tails between thier legs, but they still showed up next year and tried again.

Can’t say the same for Sony.

I swear to god people just don't like games anymore? MS got slated at the launch of XB1 for not discussing games enough; this year they show more games than any other conference I can remember and they still get slated for it? I'm happy I'm fortunate to own all 3 consoles so I can't demonstrate nor relate to unbridled and laughable bias.

Not that I think anyone is taking this 100% seriously but ..

Sony did nothing and they still got some mindshare with gamers out of it. This thread being an example.

A little more seriously:
I think the thinning level of 1st party PS4 content and prepping for a new console announce and library are pretty good takes.

I wouldn't have watched their conference anyway, it's always late in the night and most Sony games are very meh to me. So no thanks from me!

Well if mindshare and money are all they care about, they certainly got that.

So yayyyyyyy

If they love the players and consumers, different story.......

Boooooooo.

So did you win? Or did Sony?

It's all good. The thinning of games has been a sign for years. Studios finishing games off and then shifting resources and so forth. It use to be we would get greatish launch games, 2nd year quite a few new titles, repeat for third year, fourth year, slow down, year 5 rumours, end of year 5 leaks, year 6, 'people will work extra hours to buy the ps3' 😅 like a dick, I was one of those people, despite the fact I told myself that I would not until at least the 2nd year..
