Panzer Dragoon Gameplay || Nintendo Switch Trailer

My pleasure. I was driving myself crazy switching from video to video. Putting them side by side in gif form makes things easier to compare. I had mixed feelings after watching the first time, but now feel much better about the project.
The most striking characteristics of the originals (to my youthful mind at the time, at least) were the cool ruins/architecture and the music. It was such a surreal world and I wanted to take the camera off the rails and explore it. The new version takes all the mystery of those ruins and amps it up a thousandfold. I love what I see.

I thought they might incorporate some of Orta's innovations (the dash, and changing of dragon forms), but it looks like they're sticking to the old formula.

Personally, I like that. Retaining the original gameplay purity of the source and only adding a new coat of paint (for new audiences) is the best way to do remakes IMO.

I really do love Orta's gameplay evolution of the series though.

Overrated? I hope you're joking. This series is a masterpiece in every way. And it got better with time.

If this is the attitude we're gonna get, perhaps I should just give up right here.
I am convinced that Saga is regarded higher than it otherwise would be because of reasons that has very little to do with the quality of the game itself. I am not going to bother arguing, but there is a sort of elitism when it comes to Panzer Dragoon -- especially Saga -- much like many other cult creations.

Give up what? You take it personally, somewhat proving my point.

The developers are remaking a known quantity. While I wouldn't want the responsibility of interpreting the sparseness of mid-90s 3D games, they need to find a balance. If it wasn't for the dragon design, I wouldn't think "Panzer Dragoon" from the level, showcased in the trailer.

As for speed, the original having the character flying over a large body of water, with enemies buzzing about and the occasional object passing by gave a false sense of quickness. The player character is rarely moving very fast in Panzer Dragoon, but perspective and the environment give the impression the dragoon is covering vast expanses at a fairly reasonable clip. As I said about the trailer, the dragon looks too much like it's just floating over a big lake.

I wouldn't have even minded them going for a super-stylised Moebius look:

But I do think it looks like Panzer Dragoon, despite the modernised graphics. The ruins over the water, the collapsing columns, the weird biological weapons/animals - it all looks like Panzer Dragoon to me.

Oh i agree that it doesn't need a remake, its stellar artstyle holds up nicely at a high resolution. I don't particularly care whether or not any of them get a remake, as far as i'm concerned their artstyle transcend the outdated engine they were designed on because of the limitations of the hardware. And as far as gameplay goes, they're practically eternally playable - well, minus the first one which could get a little bit of getting used to because of the poor framerate. But Zwei? Great, no problem. Orta? No question. Saga? Completely unique design, nothing replicated or improved upon by anyone else.

These are video games of extraordinary quality because of their unique design. They follow no trends, and the only thing that i could say inspired them was Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. I'm relatively excited because of the new-found interest in this IP, because i want them to be ported everywhere possible. I'm a fan of this series, i bought an OG Xbox specifically to finish my journey through this series of video games with Orta.

I would be very disappointed if these games are exclusive to the Switch.

I found the original I little hard to play after completing Orta. Going from 60 to 20 fps like that, you really feel the lack of responsiveness.

I agree--I just started playing Orta again for the first time in over a decade on the X, and it looks gorgeous in 4K. Cut scenes are garbage, but that can't be helped. In-game, though, looks like it's a 360 game.

And I'm hoping there's a Panzer Dragoon Saga remake--I'd love to be able to play that again.

I played it n the OG Xbox a couple of years back and still thought it looked and played great. Must be a real treat on an X.

Never played the original but something about the art style of this one doesn't look as strange and otherworldly as the art in the first game. I'm interested to finally play this game though.

The only thing that strikes me as PD-esque is the battleship at the end of the trailer, which really owes all to the original design. I may feel different about the final product or even forthcoming media, but this first trailer is generic fantasy with a familiar SEGA character.

Oh man, I guess it's confession time! I never owned a Panzer Dragoon game on the Saturn, despite having over 20 games for the system. I was going to buy it as my first game (apart from the Virtua Fighter pack-in), but passed it up for FIFA, as I read in reviews that Panzer was a little on the short side and I needed a game to last me at least 3 months. So many regrets...

For a lot of people (especially those who never owned any of the CD consoles or add-ons) hearing those trumpets at the title screen, and then the gorgeous level one track, must have been quite the experience. Compared to the previous king of console on-rail shooters, Starfox, the graphics were truly next gen too. I still think those VDP2 environments look pretty great, even today.

Good point. It's probably a good idea to keep the gameplay styles distinct. Didn't Zwei first introduce that big charged attack?

So Microsoft exchanged a Panzer Dragoon for Banjoe-Kazooie in Super Smash? Weird times, but it's smart in terms of distribution.

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
Cross posting from the other thread:
Man they better not fuck up Panzer Dragoon. Make it good enough to get to do well and they get to do Zwei and make that even better and then, you know.

Graphics look alright, gameplay who knows, and if they can make it quite as a tight of an arcade style experience as it was intended. Please do it right.

The sound effects are meh, I hope that's WIP. And I guess it does look a bit more cartoony and a bit more generic in art style. Clearly low budget.

It would have been cool if they got to do Zwei first as it's a prequel, then expand on the original with the same amount of story and features.

I guess it's better they get to grips with the simpler first game and prove themselves first but if this is shit PD may never return.
Barely any SEGA involvement it seems, yeah. I mean I almost thought they bought it off SEGA for peanuts but then noticed the SEGA logo in tiny letters at the bottom of the last trailer screen.

Look at how this probably equally low budget and even more low-poly and low-fi game looks so much more alive. Why couldn't they do it like this? Look at that thing's wings animate!

I don't see that kind of artistic vision from these guys, very by the numbers, hopefully it will be solid enough but Panzer Dragoon deserves better.
Personally I found Orta's version of the Panzer Dragoon universe quite dilluted compared to the intent of the previous games, but even that, two generations of hardware ago, was in many (not all) cases more polished and artistic and alive than the remake appears so far.

Rewatching the trailers, viewing screens, it's not like it looks like a bad effort. Not what I personally wanted I guess. I'm picky. Like I said, even Orta wasn't on par with the vision to me.

Yeah there are a lot of people here who are gonna be disappointed when they actually play it lol. It's a rail shooter.... This should've been remade as a vr game. Also where is SEGA in this game? I always thought the story of them losing all of the original assets to the saturn library was a rumor.

I hope they do Clockwork Knight
Okay if this remake can lead to that then I hope it does well somehow.

I keep refreshing Amazon's game page to preorder this, but I'm not seeing it up yet. Has anyone got a link to where I can preorder it?

It only has a vague "Winter 2019" release date so far (which I expect to slip), so I wouldn't expect any order info for a while.

Oh wow.

Where is Zwei?

It was announced along with this one a few months back. The question is, will they release them both together as a pack, or will the release them separately.

I remember having this and its sequel on Saturn, but I never got through them. I am looking forward to playing this, I just hope I can complete it.

Looks terrific. Probably the only thing that would make this better is if the video announced, "Coming Soon to Dreamcast 2."

I would strongly recommend that everybody purchase this game when it's released. If successful, Panzer Zwei will follow, and if that is also a hit, Panzer Saga would be next. And since the Saturn source code to PDS has been lost, that would mean a complete remake, so we need to prove to Sega that it's worth the investment.

Zwei has already been announced.

For what is worth, pretty sure the folks at Forever Entertainment haven't used any assets from the original games - they're so old there's really nothing to be salvaged.

I love PZ so hopefully one day we will get the Saga remake we deserve.

The rail shooter is an under-rated genre. Apart from Starfox Zero and Crimson Dragon, I can't think of any more released this gen (unless you count the Rez Infinite remaster). I think they are great for those of us with limited time. Plus, Panzer Dragoon has something special about it - the art-style, music, mood, atmosphere. Hopefully, a remake of the RPG game (Saga) will be released too.

While I like that Sega is willing to give talented and enthusiastic developers a go at their old IPs, I'm sometimes disappointed by how much they seem to distance themselves from the games. So I was glad to see them (finally) acknowledge and support the game with this tweet:

Nintendo promoting the game should also help raise its profile and gain new fans:
