What is this narrative that Sony skipping E3 was a good choice?

Sony basically said "f you guys we skipping this year"...and this is a good thing....for gamers? As a community we now love zero effort?

Wait, they are still releasing games to play are they not? Jesus christ people, you'd think Sony literally told gamers to fuck off judging from some of the takes we're seeing in here. Oh no....they didn't put together a shoddy showcase of CGI trash and PR speak for us to fight over online! How could they?

There is a not-zero number of people who will paint any action by a company as a "good choice", and there's a not-zero number of people who will paint any action by a company as a "bad choice".

That's the background static of the internet. I wouldn't say there is a "narrative" that Sony skipping E3 was a good choice, but there is some merit to the idea that they are doing it for PR/next-gen jostling. It's not like Sony are strangers to PR stunts for the sake of propping up their own brand and/or tearing down the other brand.

I guess we'll have to see whether it was a good choice or not as the months march on. In the midst of it, plenty of people thought Microsoft's original X1 reveal was a "good choice" years ago.

a multibillion dollar corporation can't have a development system where theres at least 1 game ready to show every year?. pathetic,

thats not the Sony I lived with

I’m sure they have a ton of unshown stuff (including things like sequels to Horizon and God of War). They just don’t need to show it now as Death Stranding, Dreams, TLOU2 and Ghosts of Tshushima are the big remaining PS4 games and they’ve shown a ton of those. All the other stuff they’ll save for their big PS5 reveal next year. They need to make a splash there, not for the last year of PS4.

Same with MS who showed pretty much nothing new. It’s just the way it is at the end of generations. The current consoles are near market saturation and any new heavy hitters are being held for the next gen blow outs. You don’t show games 2+ years out late gen like you do early gen when trying to hype people into buying while the library is still thin.

Nintendo showed way more as they’re off cycle and just early in year 3 of Switch and 2+ years away from their next gen console (not counting mini or pro mid gen refreshes).

Late gen E3s always disappoint and early gen are exciting, but are mostly teases full of hype reels of games years away. Like how we still aren’t playing things like FF7 Remake, Beyond Good and Evil 2, Shenmue 3 that were revealed years ago.

Yet here we are, still talking about Sony. Sony is still in everyone's mindshare. Think about that one for a little bit.

I think, you are completely misunderstanding my point. I own both systems. I play both systems. I enjoy both systems. I would rather have a mediocre showing at E3 compared to no showing at all. Either they both present or no one presents and they agree to get E3 conferences changed as a whole (refer back to earlier post about E3 happening every 2-3 years). I don't get how hard this is to understand.

I think E3 just needs to go away. It’s an arbitrary set date for developers to have things ready to show and leads to crunch to get demos and trailers ready which then leads to crunch to make release date due to time wasted making that material.

Conferences are just relics of the past in the age of streaming, YouTube and easily downloadable demos. Nintendo has it right with their Direct approach. When developers/publishers have things ready to show, announce a direct, put out the video at an advertised time, make demos downloadable for all etc. It also gets rid of the terrible, cringe inducing stage shows.

Well you interpreted an E3 no show as "f you guys we're skipping this year", whereas I interpreted the move as "we don't think it's worth it to present what we have this year."
I don't get the offence people are feeling because they don't have Sony press conferences to scrutinize. You'll have games this year, and Sony is going to reveal their next gen plans and games when the time is right.

Yeah I don't have any megatons to talk about from this E3, but I'm quite certain I'll be playing some decent games between now and the next one, which I expect will be the real doozy.

I would be completely ok with direct conferences for the big 3. Apple does it, and Microsoft does it in some of their other departments. My main bone that I'm picking at is Sony getting applauded by some fanboys for not showing up and turning around and saying MS sucked for at least throwing out an attempt. Could you imagine all the disappointed fans who went to E3 and one of the big game giants just didn't show? Now imagine Microsoft also not popping up. Its like going to an NBA game and all u get is the D-League players. I just don't like the pick and choose when to show up aspect of this current E3 thing.

Agree with that of course. I just stopped engaging with fanboys or caring what they say ages ago and making heavy use of ignore user for them on all sites I frequent.

I think there is always something a company can talk about. And whether you liked the games Microsoft showed at their conference or not, they showed a lot of games, and I'm glad they gave us an opportunity to get excited for video game news. Otherwise, we would be sitting here twiddling our thumbs. Can people honestly say they'd rather have no news and no video game trailers/footage than having E3 every year? If so, that is bat shit crazy.

Now since Sony didn't do E3, I expect their next direct conference to be amazing with all the new system tech tidbits I could dream of and some solid gameplay reveals for all their upcoming exclusives. I'm already drooling over the thought.

Yep. And as I’ve said, it makes more sense to save big reveals for that event next year as their focus is now on winning the sales race next gen and it’s too early for that blowout now.

I do think they’ll have a big event this year before that PS5 blow out. focusing on remaining PS4 games.

According to quite a few comments I've seen....yes this is exactly the case. No news > Mediocre News. Apparently.

It’s not no news. I’d rather have a steady stream throughout the year of things like Nintendo Directs from all platform holders and major publishers than a big blow out at one arbitrary date for an outdated conference.

Announce and release videos, put demos and some games out immediately and to hell with cringy stage shows and nerd filled convention centers.

MicroSoft spaffed millions of dollars on an E3 press conference.

Sony achieved the same results with 2 YouTube videos and a magazine article.

Feels like Sony made the smart choice.

Yeah, it's pretty weird haha. People want to twist it like it's a good thing.

I don't know about everyone else, but I'm memeing. What seemed to be manufactured applause at the Bethesda conference and the presentation itself seemed to be worse than just the videos Sony posted online. I haven't really thought about it too much though. It's just a funny hypothesis.

Where's all Microsoft's positive publicity for "winning" this E3?

Oh, people are talking shit because it was boring and they didn't show anything exciting.
Guess they didn't "win" then, aye?
Which is quite sad since their direct competitor didn't even show up.

Does anyone know an actual figure of how much it costs for these big companies to go to E3? Ive heard random values spit out but I cant realistically see Microsoft or Sony spending millions on one conference. But then again they got money money money so who knows.

Other than Nintendo and Square Enix, other E3 just had barely anything to show us. If Sony really didn't have anything to show then I'm glad they skip E3 instead of wasting our time like MS, EA, Bethesda and Ubisoft did.

Agreed. SQEnix and Nintendo had a lot to show, but everyone else had jack shit. It was extremely lackluster.

Don't hire anyone | $150K | Step up a booth with no special guest
Use costumes | $600K | two costumed bears join (increases popularity with children)
Hire booth babes | $2,500K | two booth babes join (You might get into the news)
Hire a guest star | $7,000K | one bear, two booth babes and star Kairobot join (Worldwide attention)

going by Game Dev Story's official figures Microsoft paid 7 million to be there and have Keeanu present

Did u really just say they don’t make that many games? Uh have you been living under a rock? Constant AAA first party releases every half of the year going from infamous and onwards. The fact the ps4 has death stranding coming this year is a continuation of that.

But that's the thing, I don't really think what MS had was mediocre. It just comes down to what your game preferences are. I was disappointed in a lack of Halo Infinite game footage and other people were upset about a lack of Gears game-play footage, but on the flip side i think both games will be good, and at least we got to see something. So, while disappointed, I'm not saying the conference was shit.

Honestly, I could say that the majority of the Nintendo conference was not for me. Did I think they had a good conference? Of course, but all i really cared about personally was Animal Crossing (known game) and the footage they showed of it was really generic, and the Breath of the Wild sequel. For the MS conference, lot of people were jacked to hear about Flight Simulator and PSO2 coming out. I would have been extremely bummed if MS had bowed out of the E3 conference, and i just don't understand the sentiment that Sony was better for not having shown up. Everyone has their own opinion though.

Publicity isn't always a great thing. Imagine if Sony came out and had a 2006 level E3 conference. They would fumble the ball before the gen even started. Or imagine if their conference was meh like last year (although they did show a lot of good games) and they just showed the same games. People would complain they are just showing the same games and fanboys would say "haha they have no games." And let's say MS had a phenomenal conference (they didn't at all) and Nintendo does the one they did yesterday, people would say Sony got owned and that would be the entire news story for this E3. Sony decided to do it on their own terms. They dropped a long trailer for Death Stranding that blew up the Internet and then dropped some PS5 news. They'll probably have a highly anticipated State of Play this month I would guess. It disappointed me that Sony wasn't going, but it didn't really hurt them in anyway. If anything, Sony is in a good spot right now.

There are definitely ponies who damage control for Sony all of the time (every company has them), but there's also many people complaining about Sony not being there who have an agenda of their own.

so, just because Microsoft didn't have a great showing. it was a good decision to not show fans some exciting new things? lmao. is this the level of fanboyism we've reached that even the media says stuff like that?

In what world is it a good decision for Sony to skip the biggest gaming event, but also show us all more new games, well. it would be if they had nothing to show, Just like E3 2017, or, E3 2018. no I kid you not you can go and watch those 2 E3s. no new exclusives announced. we've had E3s from 1994-2018 from Sony. the only two E3s that lacked new games, are the last two, and 2019 is basically the third E3 Sony does not announce a new game in. why?. well thats what happens when you don't make that many games anymore

tldr: Sony skipping E3 was not a good decision for any of us, its a good shitty corporate decision that people shit talked microsoft about for years last gen. but we're praising Sony for what whatever microsoft was criticized for. but am sure ya'll fanboys Enjoy waiting 4+ years for a game instead of having more people work on more exclusives for a system. I just loved seeing days gone like 3-4 years in a row before it came out.

do yall all of the sudden have a stock in Sony Corp?. lol. we're all fans, why do you encourage and praise anti-fanatic decisions?.
I disagree that MS didn't have a great showing. MS had the best showing at this E3. I know it's not saying much given that its 2 main competitors weren't there but their conference had everything that can be reasonably expected of an E3 showing. And i don't think anybody can come away from it not excited about the start of next gen for MS.
As for Sony, I reserve judgement until next year. If they're not at E3 a few months before the start of a new generation, I will call them reckless and anti consumer.

But that's the thing, I don't really think what MS had was mediocre. It just comes down to what your game preferences are.

For me personally, a lot of it was stuff I knew. But then again I'm more than your average gamer, I stay on forums and boards talking about games.

But for my wife, all of it was new. For my brother who is a gamer, but doesn't spend time on social media game sites, all of it was new. They were excited. For my soldiers who game but aren't big on keeping up with every single news tidbit leaked from the gaming community, all of it was new.

Microsoft E3 was mediocre to the hardcores who know the ins and outs of gaming news. But for someone who might find out about new games once a year at E3, this was great, they got a lot of new info and stuff to look forward to. E3 isn't just meant for us hardcores, its also an event for the casuals to get their I guess...."yearly update" on what new stuff to expect?

Could you imagine what E3 is for someone who likes gaming but isn't on Neogaf, or Reddit, or IGN (enter big gaming forum here) constantly? Any new info they get probably comes from E3. Even people who only buy one or two games a year have heard of E3. So yes, my bro who is an avid PS4 gamer and only comes to use my xbox solely for Halo, got no Sony news from E3. So even some news would've been helpful to the other millions of gamers out there who are sony fans but not sony hardcore fans.

is that why only 1 exclusive is coming out in 2019? days gone

A lot of "us" are so used to getting leaks months ahead of conferences, keeping up with every single bit of info, that by the time the actual conference comes we pretty much know everything. If you removed the internet and the only way we got new gaming news was by watching E3, would these things still be considered "mediocre"?

It kind of made Sony look like spoilsports to me.

E3 is as much about fans having fun as it is corporate business. Like a celebration.

It seems to me that Sony just doesn't have anything new to show for this year for the ps4 except for indies, psvr games, and death stranding. They're not ready to show the PS5. I'm betting that the last of us 2 and ghost of tsushimi will be launch titles for the ps5 and they're not ready to show it yet until next e3 or possibly they will have their own event.

I don't understand the OP's reasoning, so which console manufacturer is showering us with a deluge of new IP's every E3 and releasing within a 3 month window of the announcement?....Do people really believe high quality games just appear out of nowhere, out of thin air..........Perhaps NVIDIA and TODD HOWARD should collaborate on a GPU+SOFTWARE combo that just delivers an instant "AAA' + "95 Meta" game, based on the genre you choose....You spin a wheel and voila........Aladin and Jafar would be proud........

Fear not, overly concerned Sony fan! At least two more exclusives are coming out this year still!
Already out:
Days Gone
Dreams (Early Access)
MLB The Show 19
Blood & Truth
Everybody's Golf VR
Immortal Legacy: The Jade Cipher
Melbits World

Still coming:
Concrete Genie
Death Stranding
MediEvil
ReadySet Heroes
Marvel's Iron Man VR
don't understand the OP's reasoning
It's SlashBringingHasher. Guy just hates Sony and has no idea what games they actually make or what studios they own.

I mean didn't the threads that already existed about this topic cover the scope of reactions toward Sony's decision pretty sufficiently? I think it was a good choice and I have written why, not sure it's necessary to reboot the entire dialogue again.

The "Sony didn't have anything to show either" narrative is interesting, but wrong .. In a hypothetical timeline where Sony did turn up at E3 we have at least (note the avoid the other channels they used in stead)

  • PS5 tease (instead of Cerny Wired)
  • Death Stranding gameplay reveal (instead of twitch trailer)
  • Dreams segment
  • other first party MediEvel or Concrete Genie
  • Days Gone free DLC
  • Assume some third party would show to
(I'd assume TLOU2 and Ghost of Tsushima aren't ready yet)

Assuming the presentation was ok that would be a good show .. the Death Stranding / PS5 reveals would have set IGN/Gamespot and every clickbait site and youtuber on fire.

Personally I think an E3 show would have been a bigger hit, but maybe they got burnt by the poor reception of their 2018 presentation (which I thought ok)

It's not that difficult to comprehend. Why would Sony spend millions of dollars only to be rewarded with mediocre responses? Every year people are underwhelmed or disappointed at E3 because expectations are so high. So why do it? Nobody wins or loses anything.
Well, yeah.
I never said otherwise. <_<
