Apple has removed Dashboard support from WebKit, not long after it was discovered that the feature has been completely dropped in macOS Catalina, according to a changelog spotted by Japanese blog Mac Otakara.

While this news is not entirely surprising, it eliminates any slim hope that Dashboard might have returned in a future beta of macOS Catalina. The feature has already been disabled by default since OS X Yosemite, but it can still be manually enabled within Mission Control in System Preferences as of macOS Mojave.

Dashboard, first introduced in OS X Tiger in 2005, was effectively a secondary desktop on the Mac that housed a variety of customizable widgets, ranging from sticky notes and the weather forecast to a clock and a calculator. These widgets have relied on Safari's open source WebKit engine for rendering.

Dashboard appears to remain functional in macOS Mojave for now, although it is clearly a legacy feature and some widgets do not work. After over 14 years, the feature is about to ride off into the sunset for good.

I found Dashboard kind of handy when I used to use a MacBook in the OSX Lion days, but it always seemed like the kind of thing you could replace with a virtual desktop and normal programs without too much fuss.

I liked the dashboard too, but it goes there is not much I can do about it.

Yep the code base for it hadn't changed for ages. It's good to see Apple strip out the old bollocks in OSX and lean it up a bit.

I always tried to find uses for it but it was dumb. In college I would sometimes play the tile game when macs were new to me, but in general it was useless. The only thing I had on the dashboard at work was a unit converter, but I also always have a browser open and tend to just use Google.

Actually, for a little while it was cool when you could do this trick and have floating dashboard widgets on your desktop, all you had to do was press the toggle while you had the widget grabbed with your mouse, and it would stay on the desktop after the overlay went away. I used that to have a clock on my desktop, but I believe you can't do it anymore without a bunch of terminal bullshit or something.
