I'm glad I put off modding my current steam version now that this is coming.

How does this new version fare against the current modded versions? Any comparisons?

FF8 mods are a clusterfuck to the point where it has its own mod manager. You got multiple model and texture upgrades from different modders, along with UI styles and resolution upgrades. Its a mixed bag, some good stuff, some not so good stuff.

The mod to replace the PC midi music, known as Roses & Wine, is a no brainer. The only thing it has that this Remastered version won't is the option to use orchestral versions of some songs such as the battle theme. But its a very limited amount.

Having played through the whole game just last year.

- Charachter models better due to seemingly better tech, if unsurprisingly a bit less detailed than mods.
- Battle backgrounds are unsurprisingly again, worse than mods.

Nothing else shown really.

More or less expect was FFIX ended up being.

You may be thinking about FFVII there. Otherwise there are only a few, very compatible (due to the same people working together) mods and if you don't want complicatin, one megamod that is super easy to install.

The new Squall model seems wrong to me.

There's something about the hair that doesn't fit. It seems just wrong.

Compared to the original, it fine, it's more than fine
You're being picky

No, I'm not. This is a remaster, when they change Squall's hair that's a big deal for me. Maybe all these pictures are just not flattering in terms of angle, but to me it looks like they went Dissidia and not FFVIII's hairstyle for him. Considering that you have CG scenes as well where he'll have his old haircut, this makes it rather jarring, so it's definitely not "being picky".

The comparison is with the corresponding screenshot of the original
Other than being more detail the hair is not different
You're comparing it to the CGI version, does anything more needs to be said?

If you can look at those pictures, look at the CG and artwork of Squall, and claim they are not different, then I'm baffled.
The in-game original FFVIII model was limited in how they showed the hair, but even there it's obvious what the sweep in the new one doesn't match his hair. You can also see it's generally flatter and his hair hanging down don't match well with the CGI as the original model does.

Claim it's a bad angle, sure, but it certainly not close to what the in-game model tried to portray nor to the CGI in that picture. You'd think we could match the overall look of the CGI after all these years and become more faithful than the limited old model.

I'll get any version that fixes the junction system's hoarding nature, and the salary system.
The graphics are already ok.

This would just go and happen right after I’m currently nearing the end my 2nd playthrough of VIII, 20 years after i first beat it at launch. Looks like that long-standing rumour is them losing the source code was false. They were simply saving it up, to capitalise on the massive renewed enthusiasm the entire series will now get because of The 7 remake. You have to say that’s smart.

Playing 8 through again and playing it properly, using all the card mod exploits early in the game and throughout really makes me appreciate what a complex game this was. everything is put there for you to cruise through the entire game with ease, providing you know what to look for. I disagree when people say you can “break the game”. Everything is put there in sequence for a reason in order for you to use it.

I don't really care about the hair, what I wonder about is whether or not they've done anything to the backgrounds.

FF8 came out the same week as my 16th birthday. As such, i was the perfect age demographic to play it. Replaying it now on PS3 & have slowly been getting near the end again, it still holds up. But some of the dialogue is excruciating to read as a person approaching 36.

The music is phenomenal though. Tied with VII for me as best ever music in a game. Fisherman’s Horizon!!! :messenger_loudly_crying::messenger_relieved:

This is not the PC version. The graphics are clearly improved.
It is absolutely based off the PC version, the source code for the PS1 version was lost. But, yes, they spruced up the textures and character models like they did with FFIX. You'll probably still get 15fps animations, low resolution backgrounds and FMV, and the same music though.

Square just shot themselves in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about Japanese culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in America where you can become successful by being an asshole. If you screw someone over in Japan, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the japanese public, after hearing about this, is not going to want to purchase FFVII Remake for either system, nor will they purchase any of Square's games. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Square has alienated an entire market with this move.

Square, publicly apologize and cancel FFVII Remake for XBO & Switch or you can kiss your business goodbye.

I might give this game another chance I absolutely hated it back in the day but ever since finding out that Squall Is Dead I've come to see it in a new light
Anybody who has played the game already should check out that link. It’s the best interpretation I’ve seen of FF VIII

Going to go on a bit of a rant here, but the Squall Is Dead interpretation has always struck me as very flimsy at best, and seems more like wishful thinking from people who weren't happy with the story and went looking for meaning that wasn't there. And since "He/She/It/They were dead the whole time" is the simplest, most cliche way to add depth to a story, we ended up here.

Referencing the points on that site itself:

1.
As far as they know, one of their classmates just died. So Squall is thinking about death in general. There's nothing here beyond that, really.

2.
Squall's gaping chest wound at the end of disc one. The author seems to forget at first the fact that Edea is a sorceress, the most powerful magic wielder in the world. Healing Squall would presumably be trivial for her.

Then the author does address it: "Most players seem to assume that Edea healed Squall to full health for the purpose of interrogation, but why would she?" The question the author asks at the end of this sentence is answered by the author him/herself at the beginning. Beyond that, the author goes on to say that Edea wouldn't be interrogating Squall if she wanted to know more about SeeD because he's a rookie - she would interrogate Quistis.

But Edea wasn't at the prison. Edea didn't interrogate anybody - Seifer did. And is anybody really surprised that Seifer jumped on the opportunity to torture Squall? Moreover, Seifer figured that all SeeDs are told a secret about their true purpose once they're in (he says this himself), so interrogating Squall, in his mind, could still prove useful beyond just the opportunity to torture him.

3.
The author goes to great lengths to point out all the fantastical elements...in a game called Final Fantasy. None of this is worth breaking down and addressing individually.

4.
This is really reaching. All the imagery here could just as easily (or even easier I'd say) be explained as Squall searching frantically through his memories for something concrete to latch onto in order to escape the time compression and being unable to do so.

Bigger upgrade then I thought
It's not really.

They redid the fonts in high res and changed the character models. And that's literally it. (There's a reason why these comparisons on the site are so low resolution. They don't want it to be super obvious that they haven't done much). Here's a blown up version (2x integer scale) http://u.cubeupload.com/MrBonk/rem.jpg
, the dithering is missing from the 3D battle scenes but that's only because of the PS1 hardware itself, not the textures.

The environment textures in battle are exactly the same. And the pre-rendered background is still the same low res junk. (The dithering on the backgrounds is still in the exact same spots. Just slightly softer from a likely bilinear upscale).

How you can call this a remaster is beyond me. Remaking the BGs would not constitute a "remake", a remake is built from the ground up. This is just a glorified port of a hacked together port (PC version), with changes that probably took some junior artist a week to make .

Given that Square Enix can't make a faithful remake of a 3D turn based RPG anymore. Why can't they just invest a little money to have some people recreate these backgrounds (either in 3D modeled rendered to 2D images or just as 2D art)? Doing that would give them the basis for innevitible Re-Remaster edition running at 8k in 10 years and it wouldn't look like total smudge.

These guys have been re-creating FFVII BGs in 3D in their free time for quite a while now and they have finished a small chunk of them. (Like 10% of them)They aren't 100% the same but they are close enough. And it will be worth waiting for. I wish SE cared about these old games as much. Yes it would be a lot of work, but it would pay off and archive them for the long haul.

This seems shockingly familiar.😱

*Sigh* Junction all stats to 255 @ level 8...here we go again. I can't resist buying it.

Also "What's what Edea? Gonna cast death on me? Do ho ho ho! Shame it's fully junctioned...you bitch"

The Squall is Dead theory is the only way I can play this game without being furious at the plot so I choose to accept it.

It's a bummer this isn't out now, and even then, we'll have to wait at least another two months for the community to fix all the backgrounds on the PC version. I do plan on picking it up on sale at some point though.

The salt that people are pouring over the best Final Fantasy ever is too much, so much that rivers and lakes will become salty.

I don't think the models as such are possible on the original engine so they did something
(presumably port it to Unity like they did FFIX).

I think everyone was expecting the original in higher res, so having the character models upgraded as little as they are is an bigger improvement then most thought.
Not counting people who expected the whole game to be redone with all new assets.
Either way this has had more work put into it then both VII and IX.
shame they didn't a complete rebuild.

It does? IX also got upgraded charachter models and apart from that I don't see many improvements here.

I’ll just say 3 things.

1. “Well the name is Final FANTASY” is the dumbest and least satisfying possible way to explain away all of the bizarre things that happen in FF VIII. That’s 100x worse than the “it’s a dream” theory.

2. In any kind of mythology/fiction/religious tradition/etc, when a character dies and comes back to life, that is a profoundly significant and transformative moment for that character’s development. For Squall, not only isn’t it not significant, but nobody even considers it to be demanding of an explanation at all. Just “huh, I’m alive and I have no wound” and then nobody so much as mentions it again. Very dream-like in that something earth-shattering can happen one moment and then be forgotten the next moment as if it didn’t really happen.

3. There are lots of other bizarre twists like that, where they should have some huge significance, yet they just come and go as if it’s the natural course of things and never get mentioned again. E.g. NORG, the big alien thingy that lives in the basement of Balamb garden and controls the school. You discover hI’m, kill him, then that’s it, nobody mentions it again or wonders what in the hell just happened.

Honestly the only alternative in my mind is that it’s poorly written and/or rushed/not as fleshed out as it should be. But I prefer the theory and so that’s why I’m sticking to it.
