So having finally got round to watching this interview I don’t see any particular insincerity or corporate BS from Phil. My opinion of him remains the same. He’s a likeable guy that obviously cares about gaming.

However, he is fielding the softest of softball questions from an interviewer that couldn’t be any further up his arse so there’s really nothing insightful in it at all.

E3 is all about showing games.

Everyone knows Nintendo bailed years ago. not because they are too broke to afford a 90 minute E3 show, but because they lacked games. Not enough good stuff to fill a 90 minute time slot. So now they do condensed Nintendo Directs.

Sony doing their hilarious E3 2018 banquet hall show, and a no-show in 2019 simply means the following..... nothing to show. A yawn fest.

Now for E3 2020 I bet every one of you they will be back.... PS5, launch games, etc...... Why? Because there is something worth showing.

Sony skipping E3 is even odder because they are one of the console makers. Even if they hate repeating showing LoU2 or Ghosts again, the least you can do is prop up your third parties which have supported you all generation. Yet, 2018 and 2019.... that's two shows Sony bailed due to selfish first party reasons.

Not every third party is big enough to have their own show. So just like the first few years when consoles have thin first party games, it's all about third party games that ready and montages to fill the show and help them out. Why Sony has decided not to follow this in the final years isn't about being cheap and they can't afford an E3 show..... it's all about being selfish.

But just wait..... when E3 2020 comes and Sony shows PS5, it'll all be about third party big budget games and indies, since Sony never has their key first party games ready until year 2-3. So it'll be a total 180 when it comes to E3 shows in 2020 as they suck up to third parties. Just watch.

Yeah, watched the interview with Spencer and Giant Bomb. Seems nearly identical to a year ago. For Xbox brand, after 2019, Nintendo Switch will surpass it for me personally as it's giving me more exclusives that I actually want to play. Shame because I never thought that would happen but since Microsoft's and Spencer's focus is clearly on Game Pass content, outside of the 343/Coalition/Turn10/Playground, im honestly not expecting any game to go past the AA level.

You'd think it would be somewhat relevant considering how much you post in Xbox centric threads. Tho who am I kidding, most of us by now what your real schtick is
You're not getting it, being part of the Xbox ecosystem, where you play their games does not require an XBOX ONE.... I'm very much an XBOX GAMER, just as you are.... just that I play most of my XBOX/MS games at 4k 60fps on PC.... Which is also Xbox...

If he's the man that made Microsoft care about PC gaming then he is indeed a hero to me.

If they cared they would have fixed the Microsoft Store and fixed the store before that, its the same bullshit in that regard for decades now. I think the interview was actually fairly good on his part, but it basically came down to this:

"We have some services, if you like those services you can subscribe.... that is what my boss told me to say, if I want to keep my job"

Most PC gamers hate Microsoft and for very valid reasons.

And since 2013? Should we keep in mind that Microsoft has been under new management since then? Which is basically the point of this whole thread? Phil is attempting to correct the mistakes of Microsoft's past, yet you and others here who would like to see Microsoft fail, support your arguments with quote from 6 fuckin years ago.

Things have changed, and if you're choosing to ignore that to hold onto their past transgressions...well then I just feel sorry for you.

It's yet to be seen, but I think there have been some great steps in that direction. Halo on Steam is a fantastic first step. Gamepass for PC, another great step. They need more first party games now, and they've taken steps to resolve that issue too.

This is more than they've ever done under previous leadership. People have already commented that they like the new beta app. There's a lot of positivity going on. You being jaded just refuses to see it coming to fruition, and that's just....sad.

And the Microsoft Store is a POS and since 2013 they shutdown Games for Windows Live fucking over a good portion of their customers. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

I can add a whole string of stuff since 2013, if you really want to get started.... this is just the tip of the iceberg. You mean new management, you mean the guys that are in charge now which have been with Microsoft like 30 years? :messenger_tears_of_joy:

So it's another project to work on. It's a launcher...calm the fuck down.

I'd rather them get the games and services right first. The beta app is part of them working toward a better interface.

Phil plays a lot? How do you know, is his gamertag public, does the intern at MS play games on his account?

Well, as far as what I've seen... She Yoshida plays games, he even has a Switch..... I've caught some of Yoshida's gaming streams too.... So there's that..... I feel, you shouldn't keep reminding folk you are a gamer, they should just see it and relate based on your knowledge and some odd details you would drop every now and then.....

He' s not good at it really, the only people I see convinced of Phil's authenticity are Xbox fans by and large......

Just give me five minutes with Phil in an interview and I'll ask him the hard questions...... I'll show you who he really is.....

Actually you can follow both Phil and Major on Xbox, and yes they play games. Lol I won’t bother responding to anything else in the post because obviously you’re fixated on the greatness that awaits, and I expect nothing less from Sony’s prodigal son.

Ok, history may be on your side. I'm still hopeful things will be different this time. I'd rather be optimistic given more recent developments. I wasn't a pc gamer back in 2013, I am now and have been since 2018. So maybe I'm afforded a more positive outlook because I didn't suffer through what you apparently have. I know that in 2013 Xbox made a huge mistake that turned me away from them initially. I've found that they've also taken enormous steps to right that ship. It why I believe that with this trend they can do the same with PC.

Like I said before, we'll see, but I'm not shortsighted and so close minded to automatically default to a cynical perspective. People who do, again, I feel sorry for you. It sucks to approach gaming with that kind of vitriol.

The present Store is going to be fucking disaster that will make Games for Windows Live look like a success, its not just gaming but a whole string of other products that will be harmed including developers, publishers and companies that have nothing to do with gaming.

I wish you the best of luck.

You wanna see Microsoft crash and burn so much so that you can't resist contradicting anybody who even gets a little excited by what their doing currently. That's very telling.

Its not dooms day... its like watching lemmings going over the cliff, more like entertainment for the rest of us. 🍿

Its funny as you say that but I'm probably the only one on this forum that probably has Lumia phone (most people don't even know what that is), typing on a Microsoft Surface, and has two original Xboxes and two Xbox 360s hocked up - and use/provide support for countless enterprise Microsoft products. As far as the current digital Store, its fubar worse than the Games for Windows Live store was before they fucked everyone over..... the good news they've basically abandoned the rest of the consumer products at this point. Really the only people left to disappoint are the stupid Microsoft Store users/developers/publisher and Xbox.... .everything else has been abandoned pretty much, although Cortana supported devices are properly on the way to being mothballed.

I mean, as much as those points in that post are valid, they're also very out of date.

MS is now finally "walking the walk" that they've talked for so long:
- Their "big three" of Forza, Gears, and Halo are now *actually* on PC - Halo isn't here yet, but it's officially confirmed for the first time ever.
- UWP is no longer forced, MS are now focusing back on Steam and the Xbox store now supports Win32 games (which also means mods)
- They're partnering with GoG for Galaxy 2.0

The first point IMO is the biggest - actually bringing their franchises over, and even releasing Halo on Steam, with a Win32 version, and being in talks with some of Halo 1 PC's big modders about what they can do for the community and mod support shows that they're finally starting to understand the PC gaming culture and what everyone loves. It might be late and there have definitely been missteps and empty promises, but "better late than never" most definitely applies here.

- UWP/Microsoft Store is a monster of a mess which hasn't even been addressed, and I have no idea how they do that.
- That's just three games... put them on Steam.... cool start, the world doesn't need a Microsoft Store.
- I see no relevance as to a partnership with GoG.

Let me show you how fucked up they are, tried to install the new Xbox app, won't install on two machines. :messenger_tears_of_joy: This is basically what has been happening to their whole consumer line, its like Skype.... they totally and completely fucked it up over the last 5-7 years. What do they do... instead of fixing the problems they create, they start from scratch and create yet another app that was worse than the first, (rinse and repeat). I have no idea why they are so fucked up in certain portions of their company, than other parts are great like the Visual Studio teams.... top notch products, VS Code is free and really one of the best free products out there.

I'm all for them making good games and releasing it on other devices/platforms, but they have basically fucked everyone over on their own platforms/devices over and over, and over... and over... and over.

The guy from 2013 in his post is 100% correct, "Sorry, but all MS is doing is blowing smoke up the ass of gullible people".

The app is in beta. Betas have bugs. Also you're having this issue, while others aren't. So should we automatically blame the app and the company who made it?

To be optimistic is to be gullible? Ok...I'll be gullible then if it makes you feel better.

Why are they creating another app for a Store that completely fubar? It replaced the other Xbox app that was in beta, how many years do they need, they released GFWL 12+ years ago... their digital storefronts have been fucked up since 2007. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Around 2012/13, Microsoft started sending people out to get feedback as to what they need to do with GFWL, everyone was like fix your shit, instead of fixing they shut it down and start from scratch, over and over. All this new app is, is trying to start from scratch again instead of fixing their shit. It really isn't that complex, really what they are doing is adding more broken ass shit on the top of their existing broken ass shit.

Halo IS releasing on Steam, the others most likely will come later as Phil has pretty much said there's no problem with them moving over (with regards to XBL connectivity and multiplayer stuff). Their own store is being completely revamped again, and, like I said, allowing Win32 apps.

We can physically see them following through on their latest promises right now, is that not good enough?

If they want to release games on other platforms that I might want to play where its not on their platform, great start, as far as them being a platform, storefront, etc. those days never were and never will be.

Personally, I haven't seen them talk about any games I'm personnally interested in, but you never know in the future.

D DanielsM will probably never acknowledge Microsoft even if they do make good on the promises. To him, it seems it's just not possible. It's completely irrational to think this way, but there it is...all you can do is look on and shake your head. If it doesn't happen...welp, there's that, but I'm not gonna sit here and laugh and celebrate anybody's failure. That what fanboys do.

As I clearly have a ton of Microsoft stuff I wouldn't call me a fanboy of anything. Me (or my family) actually owned every Nintendo system until I brought the GameCube home, I turned it on and I was like what the hell is this, last Nintendo product I ever bought, Zelda:WW is the last Nintendo game I ever bought (great game btw). From there is was Xbox products, but during this time anything involving Microsoft on the PC side has been FUBAR, as was the rest of their consumer products/services. I'll dump any company if that stop doing the right things, but at this point there is no reason for me personally to get wrapped up in their services model.

What I am saying is the reality of the situation, the good news is Microsoft really can fuck over too many consumers anymore because they basically abandoned everything else. The bad news is it looks like some people are going to have to find out the hard way how Microsoft operates in the consumer space, Xbox was kind of the exception during the early years 2001-2007.

Lol, the bolded gave me a good laugh. I won a Cortana cannon or whatever they're actually called (Microsoft's version of the Echo) at a tech event. I already have an Alexa ecosystem at my house, so I put it in the kitchen where I don't have any of my smart devices to use it mostly as a radio when I cook. I have all but forgotten her, but every once in a while without making any noises or saying anything, she'll just chime in with "i can't get to the internet right now" or "I didn't quite catch that, can you please say it again?" It kind of makes you feel sorry for her, like she's a lonely AI that just wants somebody to talk to her.

Regarding Phil, I've thought he's overrated for years. Lots of talk and very little in the way of games. That said, he seems like a fine person and Xbox could do worse, as we've seen in the past.

FFS man read what you're saying. It's not about whether things are AAA or not, it's about your personal preference in games. Some people like Mario. Some people like Halo. Some like Uncharted. Simple as that.

Two companies are releasing these powerhouse of consoles next year and one of them is doing it solely to launch as many AA games as possible? It's like people hear what they wanna hear out of this interview.

I'm not a Nintendo guy. My expectations for them is lower than Microsoft yet sadly, more exclusives on Switch appeal to me more than Xbox One. My main issue is that due to Game Pass and the vast majority of acquired studios being A/AA, they're going in a quantity over quality direction. That's not what I want. I want them to give me their version of Horizon, God of War, Uncharted, etc. and for me, it just looks like that's not going to happen next gen. Yeah, the big four will do their usual of Halo/Gears/Motorsport/Horizon but everyone else seems to be setup for a two year cycle of a AA game if that. Just isn't what I was hoping for. Outside of Playground and Ninja Theory, none of the acquired studios make me believe that they will be anything more than what they've already been before Microsoft acquired them. The only difference now is that their games will progress faster than before but still be in the A/AA category and again, not what I was hoping for. After 2019, I will have played 6 exclusives (Mario and Rabbids: Kingdom Battle, DKC: TF, NSMBUD, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3, Astral Chain and Link's Awakening Remake) for Switch in less than three years than what I have had from Microsoft this entire generation spread out over the base unit, the slim and the X. Ryse: Son of Rome, Dead Rising 3, Gears 4, Quantum Break and Gears 5 in September in basically six years.

Maybe your expectations are lower than mine. What I listed for Switch is exactly what my expectations are simply because it's Nintendo and they're always a generation behind minimum but Microsoft has the most powerful console on the planet and yet, it will take them two years to fully take advantage of it with Gears 5 which is the first exclusive for me since Gears 4. About damn time. In the end, I simply expect MORE from Microsoft than Nintendo because well, come on. Why would anyone expect more from Nintendo when they're constantly and consistently a minimum of a generation behind Sony and Microsoft?

The vast majority of Microsoft's games don't appeal to me and are half as much as Xbox 360 gave me and I don't even care about Forza or Halo and 360 still gave me at least double the exclusives. They've simply gone backwards and acquiring all these small two year studios just so they can release more quantity over quality game in order to support their crappy Game Pass is simply not what I want or invest into an eco-system and platform for.

Maybe you do. Maybe others do. And that's fine because that's you. But for me, I simply expect more. Sony gave me ONLY 5 exclusives with PS3. With PS4, I have at least 20+. It's insane and this is what I want to see Microsoft do for next generation but sadly, looking at their direction, acquired studios and as said by Matt Booty the other day, focus on Game Pass and yeah, just not what I want from them.

On the positive side though, they're kicking off next gen with Halo Infinite so im hoping that's a preview of what's to come next gen.

Phil comes across well, but largely because he says the things that people want to hear. Now whether he actually delivers on this things is another matter ...........
Bruh, seriously... Have you been living under a rock??? *How do you even call yourself a real gamer and make statements like this?

Regardless if you're an Xbox fan or not, who can ignore all the huge changes and pro consumer shit Phil has done -- not only for Xbox -- but for PC and others?

I love Phil Spencer as a company man and as a person but if we were to judge by results of XBOX brand, the credit he gets is just too much, at least from XBOX fans. From a company stand (not XBOX, but Microsoft) I can see his worth and why he was promoted, but I find a great discrepancy between that and what gamers are asking for in a videogame forum.

Love him or hate him Phil does a lot for gameing. The industry is better with him. I think the next xbox is going to do fantastic vecause of him just like he helped fix the one. He made microsoft the most consumer friendly of the 3

It's crazy some of the recent points made tbh......What are the PRO consumer things that Phil have done exactly...

1. Give lots of great games to gamers the last 6 years?
2. Move demos, betas and F2P's etc behind paywalls?
3. Decrease on XBLIVE subscription prices, whilst the competition increases theirs?
4.Offer more Crossplay games to their base than the competition?
5. Improve their Windows Store, add mod support, make it les clunky, get more games on there so it could be viable?

The worse is that people talk about MS offering PC support, when I made the thread on MS games going to steam, I thought they'd announce all the Forza's, Gears and the rest of their gaunt lineup being ported to steam.....So they'd announce at E3, Gears Remake, Gears 4, Forza 7, Horizon 3, 4......Hell, where are ports to Horizon 1, 2, forza 4+5, Gears 2+3 on their own store....They could have made all that available on PC....What about porting the Project Gotham series to their store+steam……...Halo MCC is still missing in action on PC, on their very store, talking about drip feeding a 5 year old remaster to PC from original games which are much older......By that time all these games release or if they release them all, I'd most probaby have played a bunch of next gen games, with great physics and AI that make these look like PONG...So keep telling MS they have al the time in the world.....Next year, X018, this E3, you wait it's coming....Then you realize you're already old and grey and sitting next to Phil at an old people's home...And he's still promising things, power of the cloud, revolutionizing PC gaming, services......Like a programming loop with no end code....

It's crazy, but People are pretending that MS is selling Linux to people......MS is the creator of the Windows platform, they have a store.....Should anyone beg MS to put their games on PC/on their store or allow Steam support? Should anyone tell MS to fix their store or allow mods or Win32 support? Creators of Direct X you say......I think these creators are long gone.....There's only an empty carcass left...….

I think what needs to be done is to divorce Phil the MS employee from a Trillion Dollar company to Phil the guy in charge of XBOX and what he has delivered to gamers this gen......What they've promised from 2013 and what they've actually delivered 6 years later.......

Their not walking the walking, their talking the talk.

I'm just replying to mostly just comment on some things. Not arguing on what "talk" they aren't "walking" or "talk" they are just "talking.

  • From what I read; Microsoft says they are still working on UWP but they are also supporting Win32 again after not really updating it for a while. They plan on adding UWP features to Win32 apps but I believe the expectation/hope is that at least for smaller apps people choose to use UWP. It seems they are also becoming more open about what shows up the store. So more Win32 apps. So it'd be closer to what Mac does; which basically doesn't force you to make your apps using specific technologies. The idea of UWP/WINRT is fine as the new main focus, but they neglected the other ways of making apps while they didn't really deliver in terms of features/stability/design. But most importantly, they failed to entice developers like Apple did. They haven't said much about their plans for the actual Windows Store as an app which needs a lot of improvement. Microsoft is supposedly working on something big in the background right now for Windows itself; which may contain the updated UWP or a replacement for it. We'll have to see what happens.
  • I would like a good Microsoft Store but not so much for gaming. It's nice having a centralized place to grab most my apps. I use the Mac App Store on my work laptop to get VPN client, and other random software. I mean I could go to their websites but I can search all my apps in one place and use the history to redownload easily. Security wise; I wouldn't be throwing my credit card at a bunch of small sites to buy software. Mac also has a good community of developer wiling to make apps, some of which are really good. Like there's the same nifty news reader I have on my iPhone and I got a slick window snapping add-on. Also, having Apple try to block malicious apps is better than me googling for an app that lets me do something random (like auto-clicker or file renamer) that could be malicious and no one at least tries to screen it for me.
  • The Xbox app is in beta and only works with newest version of windows. It's not a UWP app. It's working really well for me so far.
  • Skype had a lot of problems before Microsoft bought them. They were popular yes. But their desktop apps had a lot of security problems and bugs. They were slow at delivering new features; they split their team up to do too many random apps while had atrocious mobile apps. When Microsoft acquired them, they left the same guy in charge of Skype (and put a lot of trust in him as he drove to merge Skype with Lync and was a candidate for CEO); and they also still had garbage mobile apps. When they finally finished the Skype mobile revamp years later; WhatsApp, Messenger and all these other chat apps already got really popular around the world and some beat them in features. Sometime after the first mobile revamp, sometime in the last few years, Microsoft started replacing "skype employees with Microsoft employees" likely so they could start getting more "innovative" to win back people back hence all the weird features they've been adding. They did deliver features faster...but rushing to stay relevant resulted in some stability problems with Skype Classic. A new major security vulnerability was discovered that according to them would require major rewrites to fix so they decided to scrap the app altogether. Them replacing the app is arguably the best thing they could have done for the long-term (if they have a long term) because the new app is built on Electron which should let them get to where they want to be faster and on multiple platforms; opposed to them rewriting most of the classic app in native code. It would also let them share some code between web Skype and desktop Skype. Many of the other popular desktop chat apps now also have the advantage of being built on Electron; like Discord, Slack, WhatsApp and Microsoft Teams.
  • Microsoft had some bad management at the top and in many divisions for a while. But Microsoft today is very different than it was during the launch of the Xbox One. There's a new CEO at the top, a bunch of changes in the other divisions too which I won't get into, but a new head of Xbox, a new head of MGS, Xbox execs like Marc Whitten and Don Mattrick left. The past horrible choices made with the Xbox division, the choices made with Windows 8, legacy Windows problems, and the poor choices of Windows phone all existed before the new management structure came into effect. Ultimately they are still failing today but they are working off previous failures. It's still the same Xbox generation that Don Mattrick and all them screwed up. The UWP is the attempt of salvaging the failures of Windows Runtime from Windows 8 while trying to make Windows Phone viable again. But too little too late for Windows phone and supposedly legacy issues of Windows is/was clashing with a lot of their UWP endeavors on PC. Of course that doesn't mean the existing management hasn't made bad decisions either (like Satya's initial neglect of Xbox...Lion Head). But I wouldn't use their history too much to determine what they will do in the future especially now that the company is much different today and the other employees move around/out and new ones come in too. I had very low expectations for the PS4 as a platform (not the games but the hardware, system software and services) after the PS3; but they switched up the management (Hirai became CEO, got rid of Jack, moved up Cerny, other promotions), moved OS development out of Japan (supposedly), made the teams communicate more, and now is an amazing platform for developers and for gamers.
