I’ll check it out for sure, I’ve been hearing liquid cooling isn’t necessarily all that. Does the price look about right or could I get the same for less elsewhere? Also... no clue why it says 1660 when I have 2080 selected actually
It showed the 2080 to me.

Can't help with the prices. I live outside the US.

Maybe not the correct thread for this, but thought I’d give it a go.

Not sure if anyone here can help me, but here is my situation:

A mate of mine sent me an old PC of his interstate via courier in order for me to use it as a MAME machine. When it first arrived, it was working fine and I started setting it up. Then one day I went to boot it up and nothing happened.

When I power it on, the power light comes on, the fans start spinning and the HDD light turns on briefly and then goes out and that’s how it stays. The PC doesn’t boot and there are no noises or lights indicating that the system is loading.

Now, I have a basic to medium understanding of computers. I’ve tried booting to BIOS. I’ve tried different SATA cables and SATA slots. I’ve tried removing the RAM one by one and reinserting. I’ve reseated all the cables. I’ve removed the video card and tried booting without it. Now I am running out of ideas.

I’d rather not take it in to a computer technician if I can help it as this is supposed to be a budget build.

I’m starting to think the CPU might be fried.

Does anyone have any advice?

Sounds like a PSU issue. If you can try another one.

By the way, I wanted to know if air cooling is preferred to liquid cooling? I mean I don’t really plan to overclock but then again I don’t know what’s I might find myself doing down the line.

I’ve read 120+ requires maintenance and refilling or something along those lines. How much of a pain is it and how often? Or should I stick with 3+ or so air cooling fans?

Air cooling with the right fan/heatsink can be better by a few degrees. They both work equally as well IMO and I think it comes down to personal preference. Fans may be louder and some liquid systems might require maintenance but I have had mine for 5 years with no maintenance. I use an Asetek Liquid Cooling system.

im just waiting on benchmarks for the x570 and 3900x. these are the last 2 parts i would like to upgrade in my system..keeping fingers crossed AMD has a good showing in real life tests

Seeing that pricing was announced for the new Navi 5700 cards, what is everyone's thoughts prior to benchmarks. The XT @ $449 is going up against the GTX 2070.

Priced too high. It's a mid-range chip at a high end price. These GPUs are priced close to the MSRP of Vega 56/64, AMDs previous high end.
Lacks ray-tracing. A console will have ray-tracing next year and we can't get that in an AMD GPU that costs up to $500 this year?
Decent performance from AMD benchmarks. 7-10 months later for the same performance as an overclocked 2060/2070.

Easy for Nvidia to counter it seems.

Hey Gaf,
I am looking for a laptop for my father. No powerhouse needed, used for simple Excel, internet, movies, maybe some map apps for truck drivers.
Needs to be sturdy, good battery life, ssd, and ideally around 500 euro or below.
Anything you guys can recommend? This is EU obviously.

Too easy. It's almost as if Nvidia knew all along they were overpricing and the new Super cards were the real value prop they should/would have released if they had any decent competition.

I don't blame Nvidia for their greed. I am salty. But not really for me--I paid $583 and tax for my 2080 half a year ago--FOR everyone who thought buying one of these cards near msrp was their only/best option in the foreseeable future. A lot didn't want to wait a year for a the hollow promise of first gen Navi and the subsequent hoped-for price war it could start.

Nvidia is doing exactly what it needs to do and no more. I'm unhappy to be proven correct because Amd failed once again to push team Green into delivering mid range cards for mid range prices and mid-high end range cards for less than ultra high end prices. Unless Amd reacts strongly and swiftly by lowering 5700xt msrp below $400, this was a small realignment. As in, no better than what we should have gotten when Turing released.

Leonidas (as usual) is being a bit overdramatic.

Im speaking as somebody who owns a 2080 Ti, so my opinion does have some value.

The answer to your question is easy:
Wait and see what the benchmarks are and how it performs. You've waited this long, might as well wait another month and see.

If the 5700XT does outperform or is at least on par with the 2070, then quite frankly it's a better buy. Of course that could be null and void if the Super series from nvidia is as good as leaked. At that point, by all means, buy the new super 2070 Ti if priced competitively.

In regards to ray tracing:
Yes, the 5700XT lacks ray tracing, but as someone who owns a 2080 Ti and played many games using ray tracing, it is very questionable as to whether the visual improvements are worth the performance cost and that's using a 2080 Ti.
I would argue that ray tracing is so barely usable on the 2070 that the feature barely exists. And don't get me started on what an epic fail DLSS has been.

Metro Exodus I would argue has been the best use of ray tracing in a modern game, but I can guarantee you that most people could not tell the difference between a rastuerized image and a ray traced one. On a 2070 the ray tracing options are so limited they're pretty much pointless to use. Quake 2 RTX is a masterful use of full raytracing, but jesus christ does that come at a cost in performance.

I got my computer back from them in like March. I do regret not getting my racing chair through them at the time. My current racing chair is OK but those seem nicer... for the same price.

How much did you pay overall? I am happy with my system from cyberpower.

So I actually made some minor changes. I went with the Maximus XI Hero mobo over the Prime. Overall, cost was 3.3k and I think I’m going to hold off on THAT monitor above actually. I’m still looking around as far as the monitor is concerned.

Btw, how was the packaging/delivery?

The packaging was exactly the same as what you would see in a store despite it being custom built. The delivery was fine. I am not used to having to sign for something or losing my opportunity to get my package. I signed for it got it and then played with it. I did not get anything extra for packaging but they had a ton of stuff internally to make sure nothing to out of place. They also delivered it a week earlier than expected

Im thinking of getting a new zen2 CPU. Probably the 3800X or 3900X.

My current ram is 32gb at 3200 CL16. would that be ok on these new CPUs do you think? I just bought these sticks about 8 months ago and really don't wanna have to replace them since I paid just under £300 for them and because prices have dropped a lot since then I think the most I could get for them if I sold them is about £80-100.

I found some sticks at 3600 CL17 but they are £350!! Even if I did sell my current sticks I'd still be paying about £250-270. I just can't afford that on top of the price of a new CPU, a new motherboard and a new PSU (yes I need it).

I don't wanna drop ~£1000 on upgrades if I'm gonna be held back by these ram sticks.

If a ram stick is advertised as 3200 CL16 is that the absolute best they will manage or could I go beyond 3200 if I lowered the timings and increase the voltage a bit??

Thanks!!

Despite Ryzen 2 being just around the corner i may just go ahead and build a 9900K Mini ITX rig. Small form factor sucks donkey balls on the X570 platform, going by what Computex had on show, and at the very least the 9900K will still be as fast as the 3900X and provide more than enough CPU grunt for the three years I'll keep it.

Really wanted to build a nice small form factor Zen 2 build but it looks like the power demands and cooling requirements of Pcie gen 4 have severely limited the motherboard manufacturers options.

Ryzen 3/Zen 2. Ryzen 2 came out last year... lol

if you want mini itx Ryzen you'd probably best wait for B550/A520 boards. apparently they will still use PCIE 3.0. more likely they will do smaller board sizes for those chipsets. the thing is those apparently aren't coming until the end of this year or early 2020.

If you are in US, check out HP's 13.3" Envy x360 series. ($450-ish refurbished)
They have superior screens and sound.
Matebook has oversized battery.

3xxx series (still 12nm but better than 2xxx) notebooks are rolling out meanwhile.
Lenovo has very competitive looking Thinkpad 495 (14") and 595 (15"), should cost at around 600-700 new, sport 3xxx series, which, to my knowledge, have better battery life.

Of course that could be null and void if the Super series from nvidia is as good as leaked.
That is IF nvidia prices them competitively and IF AMD doesn't respond by lowering price.
Apparently two big IFs.

i'm thinking of getting a cheap ass Athlon 200GE for £40 which is the cheapest AM4 cpu i can find and sticking that in my the X470 board so i can update it. and then when the new CPUs come out i can just drop it in and sell the 200GE.

would that work?

apparently those Super GPUs will take the current prices and the current models will get a price drop. so for example, here in the UK a 2080 Ti is £1,100. so the 2080 Ti Super will be £1,100 and the 2080 Ti will go down to ~£1,000.

Just wait and see how Ryzen 3 performs. You've waited this long and it's quite possible Intel could respond by dropping the price of the 9900K. It's very much a win for you to wait and see.

In theory, it should work fine. I'd love for Gamers Nexus or Hardware Unboxed to make a video of the best X470 boards to use for Ryzen 3000 for someone who wants to save a few bucks over the X570.

Also, at least with Intel some boards from Asus support updating the BIOS without the CPU. Look into that

Your current ram will work fine with the new cpu. Whether you can raise the memory speed or lower the timings will depend on what brand & model ram you have plus luck.

I was on the NAVI train for a minute but it seems like the hype is dying down and now starting to be redirected at the freaking nvidia super line up. The iron is still hot AMD but it is starting to lose its temperature.

Also there have been a couple days this summer so far that have been almost too hot for gaming in my room. Fortunately my AC blasts and often but these days the AC was acting up.

I know it'll work. I just want to know if it's likely to be worth it. I'm not buying new faster RAM sticks.

If 3200 is too slow then I'll not bother

Too slow for what? Compared to what? What is it that you’re running exactly?

The decision will almost always boil down to whether or not you can afford it based on own your pockets (and not ours) that justifies the purchase. Will it work? Sure. Can you afford it? Apparently. Are there enough incentives over your current setup? Provide us with enough purpose, and we might be able to give feedback as to whether it’s a substantial or marginal upgrade.

General answer you’ll find about is if you can afford to upgrade even if the difference is negligible, go ahead.

Trying to upgrade my htpc (is this still a thing?), a machine too weak for x265 4K. CPU is an old quad core from 2011? sandbridge i believe, currently using the igpu. I have two options an RX470 for 90 bucks or a GTX1060 3gb for 150 ... which one has the better decoder and encoder (ffmpg), the new gpu should also have HDR support.

I know that the RX is the much better deal, much faster gpu and if im not mistaken, the deal has two extra games with the 470 the diviosn 2 and another one.

BUT i need a gpu for movies 4K decoding and encoding primarily. For the price of the GTX i can get an RX580 which isnt that much faster than the 470. Has anyone done some testing with these two?

thanks all

This is tough. A 1060 3GB for $150 honestly seems a little high and I bet you could get a better deal on ebay for a 6GB and that would be the better choice.

According to AMD, 3733 is supposed to be the sweet spot but I seriously doubt that going from 3200 to 3733 will yield drastically better performance. You will be fine with 3200. If you were using anything less than 3000, I'd be concerned.

I have 4 3200 sticks and I plan to transfer those over to my AMD build coming next month and I'm not worried.

Thanks, but in terms of video encoding, are there any differences in speed, and quality between them? Been using Radeons for years, my last 270x was "just ok" for x264 encoding. It wanst faster than quicksync.

If someone could share their findings / benchmarks (x265 on gpu), that would be nice.

thanks.

I disagree. From multiple leaks we've seen Zen 2 get ~80ns latency with 3200 and AMD gave us the figure 69ns with 3600CL16. That's a ~15% improvement in RAM latency.

Here are some examples of what having higher frequency and tighter timings can do in games.

Don't be surprised if you see performance go up ~10% in some games with Ryzen 3000 by just using better memory alone. Now, luckily it seems the IF clock can be decoupled from memory clock with Ryzen 3000 (which you couldn't on Ryzen 1000/2000), so you might be able to close the gap slightly by just overclocking the fabric. Going to have to wait for July 7th to see.

PC came today, and it ended up being a little better than I’d bargained for actually. Wanted the FE 2080 ti but they threw in a Zotac AMP MAXX (which is totally more badass looking to match the overall appearance). On top of that, I had ordered an XI Hero but ended up receiving an XI Code? Not complaining in the least.

However, I’m still going to be changing the chassis, AIO (upgrading to 360) and adding 64 GB ram. Unfortunately, I don’t have the box for the existing 32 GB (16x2) sticks or the Corsair h100i so... selling those back could be difficult.

So it’s done, I’ve moved everything over to the new chassis, upped the RAM and AIO to 360. It’s not perfect due to the Maximus MOBO’s not being able to fit the Corsair 570x series. Did 3 top fans instead of the 2 Corsair “claims” can only be mounted (if you’re not short of space you can loop and zip-tie them securely through the fan plate’s holes)..

It was a toil the day before as I had stripped two screws on the mobo, all the while under pressure thinking I had damaged the board too. In order to remove it, I had to bend the backside using a plier so they’re very much nestled still. It’s functioning just fine, although I was extremely close to just picking up the Aorus Master if anything had gone wrong.

Not too shabby for a first build but my cable management is a disaster. I’ll probably just buy some tinted film and make that side darker >_>. These GAMDIAS fans are on the thick side but they’re dual sided RGB and badass. I’m bugged I had to use one Corsair for the rear exhaust as I had no more space on the GAMDIAS hub using all 6.

Now a step closer to running what I originally set out for in this thread, that wicked GTA V mod.

edit: changed out that rear exhaust for the GAMDIAS. Slightly cleaner wiring than above.
edit2: and we made it!:

Got a monitor question... im torn. 4k @ 60hz vs 1440 @ 144hz. Has anyone experienced both? Any strong opinions? I started building my current PC with 4k gaming in mind. But the more I look into it seems like ill get more benefits from the higher refresh.

I've never experienced PC gaming on a monitor above 60mhz, and it does sounds kinda exciting. But then I have the Xbox one X on a 4k tv and I think it looks gorgeous. And my work PC is 4k. So If my brand new gaming PC has a noticeably crappier resolution than both of those, I know I'm going to feel like what the hell was the point.

Shiiiiiit I dont know what to do.

Current build:

i9-9900k
rtx 2080 super
16MB DDR4 3200

Thanks!

I would stick to 1440p @ 144hz with the added potential of 4K DSR @ FPS greater than 60. There is no difference in performance between native and DSR from what I’ve seen.

Also, we have a new thread:

Hullo.

I need a wee bit of advice.

I'm building a PC from spare bits I have for WoW classic. I have a Corsair Carbide 100R with a "maximum" Cooler clearance of 150mm. Now, I just bought a Cooler Master Hyper 212X and realised that it's 158mm in height. Doh. Thing is apparently they fit, and I've watched a fella on Youtube fit one but he had to turn it so the heatsink was horizontal instead of the usual vertical, which means the fan will be below the cooler pushing air out towards the top vent. There is space for two fans at the top of this case.

The Question. Would you move the rear exhaust fan to the top vent to pull hot air out from the CPU or leave it where it is. (I'm also going to fit a front fan to pull cool air into the case.)

Thank ee.

P.S I've been thinking. I could also, instead of fitting the front fan, move it to extract from the top and keep the rear exhaust where it is?
