Konami announces TurboGrafx16 Mini, PC Engine Mini, and Engine Core Grafx Mini

Isn't it the Japanese Saturn version?
Not for me. I know that the msx and pc-98 versions of Snatcher are incomplete, but the pixel art is for one better, the perspective in relation to the figures is correct, and the music is awesome. The only reason i give the pc-98 a nod over the pc engine is because the audio on the pc engine sounds too thin. For Policenauts, i much prefer the pc-98’s pixel art over the 3do, ps, and saturn’s cel animation.

What I would love to see on the USA version, Splatterhouse, Cadash, Parasole Star, Dragon Spirits, Castlevania Dracula X, Magical chase, Legendary X, Bonk's Adventure, Blazing lasers, cosmic fantasy 2, Gradius, Salamander, Gradius 2, Buster Brothers, forgotten world, Bomberman, Super Star solider, Dragon Curse, Nutopia, Chase HQ, if they could arrange it with sega, After Burner 2, Outrun and Fantasy Zone, Shockman and if they could include the supergrafx games, Ghouls and Ghosts and 1941,

There's a lot of speculation about M2's possible involvement. I think they will be, after recently having finished multiple projects, like the Collection of Man, M2 ShotTriggers, SEGA Mega Drive/Genesis Mini, and the Konami Anniversary collections...

"Very, very good company"

G Games no doubt!

PC Engine was already "mini" though.

So they're just re-releasing it, but with emulation instead of original?

I don’t think it ever came out here in Australia. If it did, I somehow missed it, although I was aware of it’s existence.

I’d still pick this one up. Gotta own all the minis now.

Same here (in The Netherlands). The screenshots in the magazine C&VG always left a big impression on me. So much so that I can still visualize them to a large extent.

It's a great time to appreciate, re-live, or finally catch up with all of these great systems and games.

There's such little nostalgia for the TG16 in the US. Konami really should market the product as "here's this forgotten classic console AND a whole bunch of Japanese games you probably never got a chance to play." If they fall hard on maintaining regional consistency, I can't see this thing doing well in the States.

Had a Genesis which I'm happy was great in Canada. If I had got a Turbo-16 instead, I would have been ripped off.

But, when Turbo was around, there were a bunch of games I always wanted to try..... Legendary Axe, Blazing Lazers, Bonk's. All those high rated games from 1990 which EGM gave 8s, 9s, 10s. While I was playing Thunderforce, I'd think what it was like to play Blazing Lazers.

And there was a PC-E Castlevania game on CD (I think?) that was supposed to be the best Castelvania until SotN came out on PS1.

I always wanted a PC Engine but never managed to get my hands on one. I'll be in for this, especially if it has Dracula X on it.

Lets see how well Konami market this PC Engine mini, 30 years ago that was in part one of the reasons it didn't manage to break the stronghold of Sega and Nintendo....as well as the fact that 3rd party support was next to non-existent compared to the competition..

3rd party support on the PC Engine had everyone from Sega, Capcom, Konami etc. Hell even more then the Megadrive.

It'll be super niche but Konami will save money on the fact that they already own so much of the library.

I don't care if I can only pre-order it on a site somewhere, I'll buy one.

First question, how are the emulation?

Second question. hacked when?

There are several PC-e titles i want to try and i doubt Konami will included them in the box.

So did Nintendo start all this or were just there at the beginning of this fad?

Nintendo absolutely set it off currently with their popularity, but didn't start it. The Atari Flashback was out in 2005 or so. Shitty Sega Genesis minis have been done for years too.

Nintendo sold millions of these by putting out well priced products that actually cared about the emulation and history of the games. Sony did not and flopped.

Yes. Nintendo basically was the first one to come up with something millions of people actually wanted. SEGA seems to have absolutely perfected it, and hopefully Konami does a similar (or even better) job. And SONY? Well, let's not talk about that.

I was in high school when the TurboGrafx first came out. At the time, I thought it was the most advanced videogame console out there (Nintendo had not come out yet with the SNES).

To mine young impressionable eyes, Street Fighter on the TurboGrafx was the greatest game ever:

Here's the list of Turbografx games that were added to the Wii U late in the systems life at the end of 2017, it might be a good indicator of what additional titles the mini might get.

Final Soldier
Devils Crush
Alien Crush
Bomberman 94
Image Fight
Image Fight II
Necromancer

This is on the Euro Eshop so I don't know if there are any regional differences for the US Wii U. Maybe someone can cross check.

A first look at the TurboGrafx-16 Mini, which was announced earlier this week, has gone up thanks to mock-ups being available at E3, giving a first impression of the three console variations set to launch in Japan, Europe, and North America respectively.

As you might know, the PC Engine was also sold overseas as the PC Engine Core Grafx in Europe, and the TurboGrafx-16 in North America, and all three variations are set to be sold to their respective regions. While it’s called ‘mini’, each of them are actually around 85% of the original size, as it would lose some authenticity if it were even smaller. Meanwhile, the controllers stay the originally size as the original versions.

Interface-wise, the controllers use USB ports, and the output requires an HDMI cable. While the power switch is sliding-type like the original version, Hu-cards understandably can’t be inserted into the mini versions. While the back part does have a cover present where the expansion connector originally was, it’s just there for show and will instead likely be where the HDMI cable will be connected.

Currently, Konami is taking feedback on what titles should be included (you can find the first revealed titles here) over social media. It’s currently unknown whether the three versions will include the same titles. That said, while the mini console itself is of the base PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16, Konami are accepting requests for titles from its expansion, the CD-ROM² and the SUPER CD-ROM² as well.

Finally, the various versions of the TurboGrafx-16 mini are only set to be sold in their respective regions. However, Konami have said that they are willing to look into releasing the other versions as Limited Editions in each respective region if there is enough demand over social media and the like.

A release date has not yet been announced for the TurboGrafx 16 Mini, PC Engine CoreGrafx Mini, or PC Engine Mini.

Remember, they confirmed there's gonna be multitap support, so we can expect at least one Bomberman.

One of the confirmed games -- Dungeon Explorer -- is also 4p multitap compatible. I expect the choice of games will try to take advantage of the multitap in order to push sales. I'm not gonna complain...

Despite being competitors in the console market at the time, the PC Engine was able to license a surprising number of Sega IPs. Hopefully Sega will return the favour for Konami putting their games on the Megadrive mini and allow their games on the system.

Are you hoping for...Space Fantasy Zone? 😍

I tweeted to Konami to do SEGA a solid and release it as well as Megical Chase.

Knowing Konami, they will put a Gradius and Twinbee on there as well as Bonk/Bomberman for sure.

Expecting Splatterhouse and Dragon Spirit from Namco too but want Legend of Valkyrie on there.

Final thoughts on the Tweet provided. The UK in the late 80s were anticipating the PCE thanks to a brilliant Hardware review and Hudson were planning on delivering. Sadly the US market scared them into doing it and from my personal opinion it would have done VERY well for what it is. It would have certainly kicked SEGA up the arse for the Master System.

I think it would do very well there.

Hopefully we can also see some Parodius. Loved that game on my Super NES, and the PC Engine version looks excellent also.

Probably not going to happen, but Xevious: Fardraut Saga and Jackie Chan's Action Kung Fu look great too. I'm familiar with the latter as a NES game.

3rd party support on the PC Engine had everyone from Sega, Capcom, Konami etc. Hell even more then the Megadrive.
Even publications from GamePro back in 1993 to more recently IGN in 2009 said that the lack of third-party support was one of the biggest drawbacks of the system.....

Sega and Capcom licensed games to NEC and Hudson Soft for the PC Engine. All the 3rd party support like Konami, Taito and Namco was in Japan, for some reason early on NEC wanted to publish all of the Turbografx 16 games themselves in USA.

I'm not really that big on the TG-16/ PC Engine, I had a friend who had a TG-16 back in the day, played a few games on it. The system didn;t last very long in North America, but had a long life in Japan. I have not played enough games on this system to know what the best and worst games are to make a list of anything.

It would be neat if Konami did something special like, translate Snatcher in english and put that on the system. They could just keep the Japanese audio and put in english text, like those fan translations of Policenauts (they might have to edit out a scene or two, though) . Hire Jeremy Blaustein to do the translation, just to smite Kojima a little bit. That would be something special. Plus Castlevania Rondo of Blood is an obvious shoe-in for westren audiences. They already have an english translation ready to go.

The one reason why I am inspired to post in this thread, was because I got a recommendation for this guy's youtube video:

Never heard of this guy before, but his video is hilariously rage-y. But he has a good list.

The Japanese audience has spoken:

Wonder if they'll inquire what we want in the West as well, or if they'll just go by social media and YouTube commentaries.

One thing is for certain though; most people want Castlevania: Rondo of Blood. What a surprise!

YES YES YES!

Magical Chase, Legend of Valkyrie and Snatcher!

Bring them West too Konami!

Damn...Coyroon too? This thing will likely be a Gems Mini moreso than the Mega Drive.
