FF7 Remake: Tifa Isn't Getting a Smaller Chest, Just a Proper Bra

This week, fans and media outlets reacted to a translated Tetsuya Nomura interview from Famitsu about Final Fantasy VII’s Tifa with very conflicting interpretations. In the interview, Nomura is said to have been told by Square Enix’s ethics department to “restrict” or “constrict” Tifa’s chest. Twinfinite has the full interview, and has an editor’s note reading “the context and wording indicted clearly that this refers to the tightness and design of Tifa’s clothing, not to her chest size.” I’ll take an educational approach as to why this is not only appropriate when interpreted correctly, but realistic, further down in this article.

Previously, “restrict” was interpreted as “shrink,” by some. As pointed out by game producer and well-known Monster Hunter content creator Gaijinhunter, and others, this is simply not the case. As Twinfinite mentioned, with the full context, it’s easy to infer that “restrict” in Japanese is meant to be understood as “bind” or “squeeze” as opposed to “shrink.” You can read Gaijinhunter’s full translation below, replacing “restrict” or “constrict” with the much clearer “bind” instead.

We've gone over this over quite a few threads already, I'd say.

Also, the source ain't really IGN :p

This was always pretty obvious to me. The concerns about Square-Enix dictating smaller boobs made no sense when you look and realize this is the same company that put out Dragon Quest 11 last year (go look at the character Jade).

Seems like a lot of journalists got in a rush to report the mistranslation for soy points.

A Neo User requested this.

That doesn't change the fact that the correct translation has been posted in multiple thread, including its own.

This has been discussed and debated to death in other threads, so further discussion should probably stay there.

The article is from there.

The article simply cites a translation by another site (IE: my translation). That's what a source is. 🤷‍♂️

Technically, the source is Famitsu, mind you. 🤷‍♂️

Anyone remotely familiar with the charcater can see that is obviously the case.

It's a total over reaction for sure.

That the world outside the US is far less sensitive to all the SJW pressure, so the chances that a Japanese developer would buckly under the that are very slim at best.
Unless when said gaming company has a policy they enforce at random? Agreed.

From the horny mindset standpoint:
The boobs still look smaller. People who want them tiddies be in their full glory are not going to be "oh, they're just as big as they are supposed to be, they are just under a tighter bra that makes them look smaller, so I'm happy with them." It's quite like dressing a big boobed lady in a two size too large woolly winter shirt and saying, "hey she still has big boobs, you just don't see them."
So whoever is concerned that boobs aren't as much out there care very little about any explanation of having more natural sports bra.

From a clear, pure and godly mind standpoint (that no-one has):
The point was that it was a thing that went through some ethics committee. That's still a thing. None of the new and better translations have taken that away. It doesn't matter if it was about making boobs look smaller or having big boobs not jiggle too much, the point was that it was something that some ethics department thought was their job to give comments on. So whatever the reason is, if it's about the size or about removing jiggle or about having Tifa be more "natural" athlete, this was a thing that was instructed by a department about ethics. It's just as stupid for an ethics team to tell they should shrink boob size or remove jiggle as it is for an ethics team to tell boobs are too unnaturally on the way in action if they aren't bound better.

Now that said, The OG in-game Tifa wasn't really that busty. There's no cleavage, there's no jiggle (for obvious technical reasons) and her shirt looks more like constricting sports bra than anything as sexy as people would've hoped it would've looked like in the remake. I think people who are really disappointed she isn't as voluptous as they hoped she would be are going with what fan art throughout the years has molded Tifa to look like.

Personally the only things that bother me are the inclusion of "ethics" and the obvious bullshit "unconstricted big boobs are too unnatural for a fantasy athlete to have" explanation in a game that constantly takes steps away from realism. They can be shot at straight to the head, and slashed with blades and hit with missiles but for some "ethical" reason Tifa's unconstricted boobs step over the line in what's too unnatural.

Even then it's not that big of a deal though. I'm more concerned about the battle system going too fast, complex and modern for my old whiny ass and about other more or less trivial things as for example Yuffie and Vincent not being optional hidden characters. I would let the ethics team tell the designers to have Tifa wear a tent to not show any skin or tiddy stuff whatsoever if that would bring hidden characters and turn-based combat back :messenger_crying:

Lol Well yeah, that would be an exception to the rule. Obviously.

I think people tend to take good character design for granted. For example, with Dragon Quest games some people will be quick to point out how Akira Toriyama will draw the same faces and hairstyles but those same people are completely oblivious to his practical, function over form design of clothes and weaponry.

Tifa's remake character design looks good not only because it's appropriately color-coded (black sports bra under a white shirt) but because she isn't being weighed down by armor considering how she fights in battle. And of course because the more layers of clothing you add, the less pronounced features like her breasts will be which you'll notice with real women in the real world too.

I love how squenix has just been throwing whatever random bullshit tidbits about this game out and hoping something that garners a positive buzz sticks ever since e3. Also loving how now they're saying they aren't being censored just misunderstood. Their ethics dept has to be american to be this good at the art of spin.

Sounds to me like they got a lot of shit from their fans and they're like we just changed what bra she wears her tits are the same size. If they were worried about her tits popping around then just don't animate it that way. I mean we can only assume that Barrett is carrying a massive fucking package. Does that mean that they have to change what boxers he wears so his dick doesn't flop around?

I find it extremely hard to believe that they would put so much thought into what kind of underwear Tifa would wear to prevent her big tits from bouncing around. They change the size of them, people got pissed and now they're coming up with this stupid bullshit.

Going by the coverage, I'm assuming people only want FFVII remastered for Tifa's tits and Cloud's crossdressing scene.

Do people really think it looks better in her Dissidia design?

And how much bigger is her chest supposed to be? I think it looks fine.
That’s the thing, her boobs are way bigger than that. That’s what a sports bra does. This is her best design imo.

There is no sports bra, it's a 3d model not a person and the tits aren't being simulated by a fucking super computer

Don't expect well written posts regarding videogames and how models work to hold any weight. I think ultimately the whole thing has to do more with the ethics department meddling and people can either see through lies or choose to embrace em.

At least someone had already made up his mind before any clarification.

Isn’t that their job if they are preventing the game from getting different ratings in some regions?

Well, are they preventing that? Did they say it in the interview? Would a character with less constricted big boobs be a thing that requires higher ratings?

All I saw was about instructing to make Tifa have less loose top so that boobs wouldn't be too unnatural in action scenes. Nothing about ratings.

I mean, if that's the case, wouldn't it be better if they'd just said they had to do that to ensure lower ratings? And if that really is the case, why didn't they say that but instead went on with this "unnatural" talk?
