Japanese artist on Twitter gets harassed by using the word "Beginners"

So I follow on Twitter this artist that goes by the handle of Manga Materials. She's Japanese and has been selling some great reference guides and tips for people interested in learning to draw or improve their skill.

Here are some examples of her work

As a Japanese, she needs to hire translators to offer her guides to overseas fans, all of this is nice and dandy, right? Well, just yesterday she uploaded the following guides

Pretty informative, right? Well, some "artists" found the use of "Beginner" offensive and they raised a stink on Manga Materials' twitter. The whole thing got so bad that her translator actually tweeted an apology over his use of the word!

Luckily both received overwhelming support but the damage is already done. She has taken down the tweet with the tutorial to avoid getting more hate and has decided to make her Twitter private and take a break for a while.

For my part I'm just flabbergasted and upset at the whole thing. How can people be so bad at take criticism that the mere word "beginner" is offensive? What the fuck is wrong with the world?

Anyways, I just needed to get this out of my chest.

If anyone is interested on supporting her, these are her social media accounts

Well it is 21 century and anyone is expert on internet.
As someone who does paint for few years those tips were incredibly eye opening.

I use mostly wrist and never understood how pros were able to make those long lines that look so good uniform everywhere. This explains it a lot.

Isn't she offering art tips? Technically that makes anyone reading her guides a 'beginner.'

What the hell is wrong with people? Grow a thicker skin you pricks.
No, it was wrong of the artist and translator to use the word "beginner", that was very careless of them.

There are plenty of better words to describe these people. Arsehole, bastard, retard, cunt and plenty more to choose from.

I don't understand what they are complaining about.
Are they saying that what the artist describes as beginner styles are actually good ways of drawing?

They're complaining about being called beginners. Because somehow it means Manga Materials is a stuck up bitch that looks down on people and thinks her methods are the only way to become a pro.

Yeah, I don't fucking know.

Isn't it pretty telling that you get offended by the word "beginner" that you probably are one or exactly what you're calling the artist...

She’s right, use your whole arm when making strokes. You have so much more control. Anyway, yeah, that sucks. Especially since you’re trying to help people.

Can someone explain to me why Twitter is still around?
It’s nothing but vile responses and attacks for no other reason .

I opened this thread in a tab then went off and did something else. By the time I came back to read this I had forgotten what the topic was about. Looking through the initial images I was thinking it sounded like logical advice. I'd definitely fall in the "beginner" (more accurately, pre-beginner) section. If I ever wanted to learn to draw I'd take the advice into account. Since I got the gist of the advice I scrolled past the second half the the OP to the comments here and was greeted with this.

Twitter is a hate machine.

"Where did that come from, what did I miss?" I thought. It just seemed so off the the wall based on the topic I had read. What is the lesson here? That those who were offended over the use of the word beginner should grow up or that I should be more careful and read everything? Probably both.

Man though, we all have to start somewhere. I probably have the drawing skills of a six year old. A beginner at drawing, that simply is what I am.

Edit: Changed "thouight" to "thought" and a "the" to "that". Yeah, I can definitely get better and actually proofread before I post.

I'm actually more interested in the explanation of drawing techniches than the drama it self.

The arm usage looks pretty informative, used to draw a lot in my younger days. Wonder if I heard that at time it would improve my drawing.

first off if you can't handle being called a beginner, you must have some crazy insecurity issues.

secondly there is no harm in being a beginner. everyone was a beginner once. Leonardo Da Vinci was a beginner once. the old masters spent decades painstakingly copying the classic works of the day. before they made a single original work, they spent years learning the techniques of the craft. this is true of most artistic medium, whether it be fine art painting or filmmaking. by the time they entered the fields proper, they had mastery of the training. they had learned the craft.

nowadays everything is democratized. going to college is "a waste of time and elitist", learning the fundamentals is boring. "i can make a movie by shooting a video and uploading it on youtube" has given millions the false sense that they are capital-A Artists. this is what you get when standards are lowered until everyone thinks that anything produced by a human hand is art. art made by the art illiterate.

Just seems like the participation trophy generation striking again.

And people are already giving her shit for her decision to stop uploading english tips for beginners.

Jesus Christ.

Doesn't seem like people "giving her shit" as much as it's people giving her the valid advice that she should ignore the Twitter outrage mobs because they are generally a tiny fraction of the audience. If you have 100 people that like an enjoy your work and 5 that feel outraged by it, you should just tell those 5 to go fuck themselves.

It's the same stuff most people on GAF think gaming companies should do: Ignore SJW outrage mobs because they are a very small percentage of the user base and many of the complainers don't even like or play the games they complain about

Constructive criticism is the process of offering valid and well-reasoned opinions about the work of others, usually involving both positive and negative comments, in a friendly manner rather than an oppositional one.

The sooner people understand what this means, the better off humanity will be.

It's not easy at all though. Especially as MM explains:

She also replied about HSP in the follow ups.

Disgusting to see people being so hateful. When is Twitter going to take action against these PC attack mobs who scare off anyone who dares to criticize them.

My life has improved immensely in the short time I have deleted my twitter account. Dumb oversensitive cunts like that are just annoying to deal with and they makeup well over 80% of Twitter these days.

Twitter and sjw are the worst combination I’ve seen ever, it’s like they just wait till something offends them then try to cancel said person shit is just terrible.

Man all this dose is make me want to create some type of comedy show with the only purpose is to offended and piss off as much people as possible. I seriously feel like the world needs that now.

There is no hope for you in the arts if you are offended when called a begginer. This is the most tame thing you will need to deal. It is very hard to not take it as a personal attack, not atach yourself in your work since you spent so many hours, days and sometimes weeks, doing a piece but it is fundamental to be better.

One of my favorite stories about the theme: There was an old classic art teacher who used a very harsh technique to fix this: he asked his students, as a final test, to put all his teachings at work and do the best work they could. After two weeks, everyone presented him with the best they ever did. Without even bat an eye, he pick one by one and shred in front of all class. Many people start to cry in the process.

This was his final lesson: to be a great artist you need to give your best when doing it and love as a son. But after you finish it, you need to destroy it. It was very literal in the teacher's case but this means you need to be the harsher critic of your work you can and not put your ego on the line. I wouldn't want to be his student but great lesson regardless!

I dont understand people sometimes. What would you prefer to be called? Newbie? Noob? Incompetent?

There are so many worse words to use than beginner, beginner is the most neutral term for a starter that you could possibly use.
And people are already giving her shit for her decision to stop uploading english tips for beginners.

I can actually symphysis for that. When i post my comics on reddit or twitter, the hate definitely strikes pretty hard. Before i was a gaffer i was pretty hesitant to speak online because of my moderately low self-esteem and getting dozens of compliments just didnt resonate with me as much as the one comment calling my art shit or me some pos because that kind of comment just sticks and ruins my day.
