Hideo Kojima consistently makes the best game trailers

Oof that was a painful read. I think it came out just before release or just after. Kind of a kick in the gut. Still loved the game, but thinking about what could've been was tough.
Kojima is not limited by his genius, but rather limited by man-made limitations in the form of technical specs.

I don’t know about that. The recently released 8 minute death stranding trailer was horrific.
Couldn't agree more. Fair enough to all the people who liked it but I felt like I was watching 8 minutes of Kojima fellating his own ego. I also think people give him far too much credit and act like he can do no wrong. I loved MGS 1~3 but MGS4 was merely okay and MGS5...well I legit got bored a few hours in and couldn't be bothered to finish it. With the direction his games seem to be going Death Stranding doesn't interest me at all personally.

Personal bias aside, the fact is his games are highly acclaimed and talked about for years after. PT was a brilliant demo that got people incredibly excited about where the next Silent Hill was going to go. Unlike Metal Gear and Silent Hill though, Death Stranding is something brand new. We don't have a basis for it like we've had his previous works so no one knows what exactly to expect here. For now all these trailers we see make no sense to us. We don't know what we're looking at. With something like Metal Gear we had an idea even if he misdirected us from what was really happening.

That being said, I'm personally over it at this point and would really like to just get some actual idea on what the game is. We keep getting fed crumbs. I'm sure he's having fun with this but I feel like he's had years to tease us and this most recent trailer, while filling in gaps, has still left me wondering what the fuck it actually is. There are still ways he can make us think one thing but deliver another while finally letting us absorb and understand what the core of the game is.

Yes he would be a better Youtuber than a gaming dev. Probably too late to switch jobs tho
lol why do you say that?

I can understand that's your opinion of him as director, and fair enough. Although, to be honest I'm a bit perplexed why this view, and similar opinions on Kojima games having disengaging gameplay or that they're a lot more movie than game. I'd argue that MGS titles generally have really tight, fun controls and gameplay loops; which have gotten increasingly better with each new iteration. More player freedom and options, featuring some really great dynamic AI and mechanics that have a lot of creative mileage.

Say what you will about Kojima's writing or his capability to direct an interesting narrative, but if MGS games are considered boring to play, then I must've missed the memo.

Well that’s a fact but if you’re an idiot that laughs on facts then enjoy yourself
Oh come on man, you could have said that without the insult.
These Kojima/Konami threads, no matter the subject, all get to this point. It gets ugly. It’s tiresome.

Oh yes. Some of the best trailers ever and the games lived up to that hype. I still love those 2 games to pieces. MGS3 is the GOAT. MGS4 was just a little too ambitious. That TGS 2006 trailer was when I saw the downgrade. It was still good, but dang it took a dip.
I wish they would remaster it for PS4 and make it look better.

This MGSV trailer was great:

I wish MGSV had more cutscenes.

MGSV has the same amount of cutscenes that all the other MGS games have aside from 4, and that was in the Guiness Book of World Records twice for long cutscenes. MGS3 was about 5 hours, MGS2 was 5 1/2, MGS1 was around 4. there are about 5 1/2 hours of cutscenes in TPP and 1 hour or so in GZ. so about 6 1/2 hours worth.

i love the nuclear trailer so much.

a shame the song isn't in the game, another phantom limb.

There was a trailer called "Wrong" for MGSRising : Very good trailer
There was a trailer called "Kojima trailer" for MGSRising: Absolutely disgusting....cliché.

Those cliches and stupid hollywood references live up in almost every trailer that kojima offer. In fact, yesterday ive watched the E3 2007 Trailer for MGS4, its so dumb....... It present you a warfare plot, then introduces nanomachines; sons of the patriots; foxdie; first derivation of fox die;, second derivation of foxdie; outer heaven; war has changed; guns of the patriots; Activate it, macro level information about battlefield conditionts in order of battle, they found liquid; snake is no hero, never was; Naomi; Raiden can not die; Vamp wants to Raiden to finally finish him

I mean.....for a newcomer is.....WTF.

Better said confusing, not best, and then when the game is finally out you realize that is overhyped, nothing impressive

The TGS 2005 trailer was made using the initial PS3 dev kits that had higher specs. They downgraded and Kojima had to scale back the game. If you look at initial interviews, he wanted a persistent battlefield that would influence the gameplay and the outcome would be meaningful. Snake could do nothing and watch it play out. We got a truncated version of that, but it could've been a lot more in depth. Sucks that Sony did that. We kind of got that open gameplay in V, but it didn't have the awesome urban settings of 4 or the great story.
Sounds like excuses for Kojima breaking on his promises. He also promised revolutions for MGS3 that didn't end happening. A better PS3 hardware wouldn't be enough considering that not even MGS5 fullfiled his original MGS4 promises.

Interesting perspective but he never made his "promises" public until after the game was released. See EDGE Magazine interview in 2008. The dude literally said that MGS4 wasn't up to par. Not alot of developers would admit that in public. The dude is hard on himself despite his games averaging 90+ on metacritic and selling millions of copies.

Harsh, but understandable. But understand this: Adding cliches and tropes from Hollywood is one of Kojima's trademarks since his taste in films developed from that era of cliche filmmaking. I believe Death Stranding is a great direction for Kojima where he can flex his artistry like in MGS2 and not rely on cliche tactics. And no, using Hollywood actors is not a cliche.

Lol. Hardly. To paraphrase the immortal Paul Hogan "That's not a [trailer]. THAT's a [trailer]". Perfectly paced and incredibly epic. Hideo couldn't evoke these feels on his best day.

It didn't feel like it that. It might be because Snake didn't talk much and most of the talking happened in audio tapes.

I really liked that first trailer. I wish the final game looked like that.
