"VESA is unveiling the biggest update to its DisplayPort PC display standard since it was first ratified back in 2007. The new DisplayPort 2.0 specification, which is expected to arrive on monitors in late 2020, includes bandwidth support for 8K displays and beyond. This new bandwidth, at 80Gbps max, is nearly three times what was available in the previous DisplayPort 1.4 spec, and it means you’ll be able to run a gaming monitor at 4K / 144Hz with HDR support, or two 8K dispalys at 120Hz with HDR. Here’s what VESA envisions for the future:"


Single display resolutions:


One 16K (15360x8460) display 6 60Hz and 30 bpp 4:4:4 HDR (with DSC)


One 10K (10240x4320) display 6 60Hz and 24 bpp 4:4:4 (no compression)


Dual display resolutions:


Two 8K (7680x4320) displays @120Hz and 30 bpp 4:4:4 HDR (with DSC)


Two 4K (3840x2160) displays @144Hz and 24 bpp 4:4:4 (no compression)


Triple display resolutions:


Three 10K (10240x4320) displays 6 60Hz and 30 bpp 4:4:4 HDR (with DSC)

Now recently there was a thread where some people were questioning, how Sony was able to show GT running at 8k 120fps, and I shook my head, because I don't know why we always limit ourselves to current spec...."I said to myself, don't these guys know DisplayPort 2.0 is coming and even HDMI has plans to up their spec technology"...….PCIE4.0 has not even launched yet, but PCIE 5.0 is already specced out......That's how technology works.....In late 2020 on the verge of many new consoles, new GPU's, it's actual a prime and the right time to launch the new cable spec standard.......Sony has a knack of always putting in the latest technology and ports in it's console day and date, so there's no doubt that PS5 will come with display port 2.0 as well....

AN JOSE, Calif. – June 26, 2019 – The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA®) today announced that it has released version 2.0 of the DisplayPort™ (DP) audio/video standard. DP 2.0 is the first major update to the DisplayPort standard since March 2016, and provides up to a 3X increase in data bandwidth performance compared to the previous version of DisplayPort (DP 1.4a), as well as new capabilities to address the future performance requirements of traditional displays. These include beyond 8K resolutions, higher refresh rates and high dynamic range (HDR) support at higher resolutions, improved support for multiple display configurations, as well as improved user experience with augmented/virtual reality (AR/VR) displays, including support for 4K-and-beyond VR resolutions.


The advantages of DP 2.0 are enjoyed across both the native DP connector as well as the USB Type-C connector, which carries the DP audio/video signal through DisplayPort Alt Mode. DP 2.0 is backward compatible with previous versions of DisplayPort and incorporates all of the key features of DP 1.4a, including support for visually lossless Display Stream Compression (DSC) with Forward Error Correction (FEC), HDR metadata transport, and other advanced features. The increased video bandwidth performance of DP 2.0 carried over the USB-C connector enables simultaneous higher-speed USB data transfer without compromising display performance. DP 2.0 leverages the Thunderbolt™ 3 physical interface (PHY) layer while maintaining the flexibility of DP protocol in order to boost the data bandwidth and promote convergence across industry-leading IO standards.

In addition, the new data rates of DP 2.0 come with a display stream data mapping protocol common to both single-stream transport and multi-stream transport. This common mapping further facilitates multi-stream transport support of DP 2.0 devices for a single DP port on the source device to drive multiple displays either via a docking station or daisy-chainable displays. First products incorporating DP 2.0 are projected to appear on the market by late 2020.

DisplayPort payload bandwidth is the effective bandwidth factoring in coding overhead. DP 2.0 has more efficient coding versus previous DP generations and enables up to a 3X increase in data bandwidth performance compared to DP 1.4a.
 
Yep, it's a needed upgrade, even though we'll see it fully utilized from mid-gen in the next generation.

It should also make interesting choices in vr possible.

4K HDR 144GHz might be possibleble when we get to the 4080 Ti.

Nevertheless, I love that Display port 2.0 is going to have LONG shelf life.

Current-gen titles will get to 4k/144hz sooner than that. I mean, the 2080ti already manages to get close to 100 fps in some titles at 4k with very high/ultra settings (while losing a little perf with HDR on).

Will some get there next gen? Sure, but I don't believe it will be considered standard until the high end of two gens away.

not interested in 8K as i think it's probably gonna be a waste of money. 4K 144hz will likely be the best standard to aim for. Fantastic resolution and high refresh rate. Anything above 4K or 144hz feels like it'll be a waste of money.

4k 60hz still is quite hard/expensive to achieve now. 1080p is the most popular resolution and 1440p is only becoming more widely adopted since cards absolutely destroy 1080p even at 144hz. 1440p 144hz is the sweetspot right now. 1440p 60hz will be the minimum in the next couple years. 4K 144hz i think is a long way away yet but i don't see why we need to go beyond that on a desktop PC.

of course PC is never about settling for "good enough"...it's about pushing for it simply because we can and because we want the absolute best. 8K 60hz or 144hz might be serious overkill but it's PC...that's what we build them for :)

1080p is dead to me. I simply can't play games at that resolution. 1440p with solid AA looks really good. 4K is what I aim for, but 1800p is sufficient as well.

I guess this is aimed at professionals instead of the consumer market.
In order to make use of that multi-monitor res I'd have to demolish some walls in the house

People don't realize it yet, but VR will be responsible for finally moving console refresh rates a few notches.....We've been stuck in this 30fps loop for quite some time...….Finally we're getting CPU's and GPU's and port standards to aim higher in one fell swoop........I think some of the future VR technology and motion technology wants to push 240fps and up and Sony's cameras/lenses are up to the task......

It should be interesting to know what camera specs Sony releases for their PS5 camera....

I highly doubt it, the cost to put one in vs the 2% that could/will use it makes the investment a terrible idea. I want it but it won't happen.

Name a single game console that has ever used DisplayPort. It’s not happening, they will all have HDMI 2.1, which itself is no slouch.

I want display port to die and everyone to just standardize around HDMI. I want to be able to use a home theater receiver with my PC seamlessly so I don't have to deal with bullshit like phantom secondary monitors.

HDMI 2.1 will do variable refresh. They need to stop putting consumers through this clusterfuck and clean it up.

Just for the giggles I have run a few of my games at 8K on my RTX 2080 & 4K monitor....all of them were below 5fps! :)

It didn't, though. If you want variable refresh on a computer you basically have to use display port right now. If you want the best audio you have to use HDMI. It's a complete mess.
DisplayPort only exists on PC though. HDMI won. Unless I'm wrong.

Well not yet, but I figure it will come on next gen consoles......Bare in mind, I'm not saying that consoles will only have Display ports on PS5/XB2....They will have one display port and one HDMI port at the back of the console, you choose what you want to use....You will have options......Think that's the best solution tbh.....

These systems will already be hitting a cost wall for MS and Sony to hit their goal launch prices. Adding in a new output path with the few required chip, port and circuit design will add extra $$ to the cost for something that 99.99999% of their users have never asked for and would never use. HDMI 2.1 will do everything they need.

There is no logical reason for Sony or MS to add display port to PS5 or Scarlett. None. Zero. Zilch. Display Port 2.0 probably won't even be ready for the PS5/Scarlett launch.
