She is. Hope the best for her and continued growth as a journalist. Sad to see her leave NicheGamer though :(
I didn't care much for her but she was getting paid like 10 bucks per article there.

I don't know the exact timeline of what happened.

But in this case, this Sophia chick should have known better even if she thought ESA pulled the info and she posted after it was pulled.

I don't know if that is truly the sequence of what happened.

But turns out people figured out the URL (or she posted it?) and used Wayback Machine Archives to find it. I don't know how Wayback works (if they will willingly delete sensitive archived snapshots if requested?), but she should know links can be archived by Wayback. And since the excel link is still active, it looks like Wayback doesn't give a shit about deleting archived data.

Even if it is true (as she says) that all the ESA leaked info was already out there by the time she talked about it, she should have a responsibility to not egg it on.

Only reason it caught big news is because she did a video about it. Now every forum is talking about it and even Yahoo Finance did an article today. If she didn't blab about it, the average gamer and news site would have never known.

It was out there before she reported it. That’s a fact. And if it wasn’t her that reported it, it would have been somebody else the same day. Jason and Kotaku are just upset they didn’t report on it first and spin in the way they wanted.

Skimming the Kiwi Farms thread, someone noticed nobody from Kotaku is on the list.

Then someone said the site is basically blacklisted as devs don't like how they shit on devs with their investigation reports.

What? Did you listen to the Retronauts podcast over the last 3-4 years? Politics up to your ears. In a retro gaming podcast, no less. I stopped listening to it because it was becoming ridiculous. Imagine finding a way to bring up Donald Trump when you’re discussing fucking Castlevania.

The very reason I unsubscribed from his YouTube channel. Shame, because his Works-series was overall pretty enjoyable. Video games combined with political statements is not something I am willing to tolerate, especially old video games.

Most likely black listed because of the early game leaks. The very same devs that they champion against crunch time with they fuck over when it is them that can profit.

What time is it?
I haven't listened to that podcast before, but thought I recognised the name. According to this video (admittedly by the alleged victim himself), Bob Mackey has been obsessively harassing Colin Moriarty, and tweeted about him 2,900 times in 2018 alone:

That doesn't sound like a well-adjusted person. Hopefully, things have let up this year.

I don't care how much you dislike someone, that level of obsession isn't healthy and if I were Colin, I'd be a little fearful for my safety as well.

It's standard reporting, even for security bugs. People find the bugs, report them to vendor. Vendor chooses to publish patch (or not). Security experts release the vulnerability. People have to patch their machines (or) company is shamed into actually getting of their arse and coding a fix. In this event, the information was already in the 'wild' just not 'public', though the definition is fast and loose these days. People were already sharing the link and the file.

The fix was for the site to remove the excel file when it was reported in February (or even rename it) . Then the link would have been broken. As it is, they 'hid' the URL, but left the file. So anyone with the link address could still actively link it. So when you viewed it in an archive the old link still worked. It was lazy and incompetent as a 'fix'.

She also had legitimate sources and proof that this was also in some very dodgy hands. So yes, they might get some dodgy prank calls from a larger leak base, but it's better than discovering several credit application approvals in twelve to eighteen months (or worse), or have their peripheral online accounts brute forced because login emails were discovered.

Nothing to fear besides the crazy. A 7 year old girl is more intimidating than Bob Mackey. A less masculine specimen you will not find.

Really? because nearly all the content I've seen from her is opinion editorials. They at least label it as such unlike the blog soup that blends opinion and news on some sites but I'm pretty sure we don't need more half baked, politically loaded, knee jerk opinions in game journalism. We need journalists who know their beat well, rely on and quote experts, don't insert their dumbass opinion into every article.

CLearly you didn't read her work then. She doesn't do that, but accurately quotes experts and sources for the vast majority of her work - even her 'opinion' pieces. She also rarely pushes her own political opinion in any of her work.

I find that ultimately most of these, shall we say, narcissistic persona's who chose the "journalist" route to digital fame expose themselves by clearly valuing their status as "the politically appropriate good guy that you should like" over any form of journalistic integrity or professionalism.

If this 'journalist' knew nothing of the series or the developer, why the hell were they assigned this story?!
It's the internet.

Anyone can be a "gaming journalist"!

Next up, my 80-year old mom whose closest use of technology ever is pushing a calculator is going to dictate to a web master (she's never used a computer) the correlation between VR hand gestures and carpel tunnel syndrome.

Out of curiosity, what news outlet did that headline come from?

New Guilty Gear continuing the Dragon Ball FighterZ art style announced
Not feeling any guilt about this
By JOHN FRISCIA 1 day ago

At Evo 2019, Arc System Works just unveiled a teaser for a brand new Guilty Geargame, to be released some time next year for unannounced platforms. This would be the newest entry since Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2 in 2017. What makes this game especially noteworthy though is that it continues the hyper-beautiful and engaging art style of Dragon Ball FighterZ (which in turn took from Xrd Rev 2), making it an all-around visual feast. Check out the reveal trailer.

Currently, Nintendo Switch owners can play the original game and XX Accent Core Plus R on the console. Since Switch owners also of course have access to Dragon Ball FighterZ, it stands to reason that this game will make its way to Switch too sooner or later.

To be honest, I know virtually nothing about Guilty Gear or most Arc System Works games, but I know that fans of these games have every reason in the world to be hyped right now. Some fans were actually hoping for the reveal of a Persona 5 Arenatonight, but I think what we’ve gotten instead is a more-than-fair replacement.

To close out Evo 2019 tonight is Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and if Nintendo happens to drop any news bombs, stay tuned for updates from Nintendo Enthusiast!

Can't they hire a professional editor to assign these 'journalists' the proper stories to cover and not have them sperg out crappy headlines?

But... editors in the game industry are the likes of Jason Schreirer, who is a complete twat. So it's a lost cause most likely.

Whatever happened to the competent people in gaming news? Like Dan 'Shoe' Hsu of Electronic Gaming Monthly?

EGM's old ass Quarterman rumor section of random shit had more integrity than most "gaming journalists" now.

After clicking the link to the latest garbage spewed by jason schreier, firefox decided that his ugly mug had to pride the browsers starting page every time there was a new tab.

Do you people know the terror of having to see his face zoomed in and enlarged every time? Try it.

I have a ton of old EGM mags, and the stories and coverage was much more professional than what is presented as 'gaming' news today.

Maybe because it was print media? And it still had to pass the scrutiny of an editorial board?
Also scrutiny of retailers.

The typical modern day internet blogger or YT cusser trying to put that down on paper would never fly unless it was plunked in the top rack with the Penthouse mags.

People talk a lot different than write. And good writing takes time.

The net is all about who can get hits the fastest, so best way is uploading quickly written articles or a video of self commentary.

To be fair, I don't think all gaming youtubers are trash. Some of them actually do good work to keep me informed. Like Yongyea (pedantic as he is), SkillUp, LegacyKillaHD and the EasyAllies boys.

I've not frequented games new sites in recent years, not even EGM's online site. But judging from gamer's reactions I think it's good I give these sites a wide berth. Kotaku and Polygon are a joke and I've never even looked at Waypoint. Schreier, Patrick Klepek and Nathan Grayson are all embarrassing examples of 'gaming journalism'.

I really miss gaming mags though.

IGN reviewer couldn’t beat the game Ion Fury without cheats.

Ion Fury’s final fight proved to be too much for me to handle. In order to roll credits you must survive against seemingly infinite, spawning versions of almost every enemy type you’ve faced so far, attacking in overwhelming numbers, while playing a sadistic game of jump rope with a swirling laser beam that threatens your kneecaps every few seconds and grinding away at the boss’ lengthy health bar, even while he remains shielded from the bulk of your attacks by a giant dome. After a number of hours struggling to make any substantial headway, I gave up and was forced to activate infinite health with a cheat code in order to finally beat him. It should have felt like a pretty unfulfilling way to finish my time with Ion Fury, but to be honest the use of a cheat code to beat a shooter inspired by the ‘90s could not have felt more appropriate. After all, when was the last time you played a game that even had cheat codes?

I'll give him credit in that he at least played on the hard difficulty. Which for these old school shooters it's really the default mode (like Ultra-Violence for doom, Come Get Some for Duke and You want some Wang for SW) but whatever. At least he didn't cuck out. Until the final fight.

Corporations good, players bad. Discuss.

Ah, yes the good old fashioned you paid for tickets to see adds for our upcoming games but somehow you have no right to expect those adds to be good or at least for products you might be interested in. How dare you entitled gamers!

Not to mention the entire build up to that E3. The merch, the teasing, the rumors (that blizzard didn't squash at all and only perpetuated!). All of it suggested a major Diablo reveal and we got this.

Hey Jason Schreier (if you end up reading this), if you think that it is okay to belittle and take advantage of your consumer base and to publicly belittle your audience because they want some mutual respect, you can feel free to fuck off.

He's reading the forums.

If you want to see a junky "gaming journalist", check out his twitter page. Guy spends half the time like an infomercial at 2:00 am in the morning hawking products. Half of his opening page is him plugging his 2 year old book.

And pinned as his first tweet is............ "hey everyone, I'm writing book #2"

And here is is crying in the first non-pinned tweet about access. Looks like 2k bans Kotaku too from access. And he acts surprised. They didn't give access till the last minute, the day before launch! lol

I think certain outlets probably didn't get access because they didn't want the first reviews to be "This game doesn't say enough about how donald trump is bad" or some other woke bullshit hit piece.

Maybe the problem is Kotaku, press sneak fuck and not everybody else?

:pie_thinking:

I noticed a pattern of the list being all the sites that screech about “social issues” and inject it in their critique of games when there is none. Going as far as fabricating stories.

Do we forget the “retarded” audio thing not too long ago from Hacktaku?
