I have to question whether she and her fellow woke group really do have a grip on 'nerd culture.'
i like Lindsay too but it's clear she is just a shill at this point. her last video was merely regurgitating plot points to GOT without even any critique while doing a lame "meta" product placement. she is getting PBS money too it seems, which sort of means people tell her what to produce, which is probably fine, as she seems to only cover popular movies & Disney films anyway. if you are a serious film student into feminism or whatever there is a long history of independent films she seems to ignore entirely in favor of talking about popular garbage.

i love RLM because they talk about popular garbage. they are perfect for the medium, which typically produces nothing but hot takes and corporate sycophants anyways. watched a bunch of Nerd Crew stuff last night, it was basically the same blockbuster fellating that goes on in Era whenever they aren't on a witch hunt crusade.

Yeah, I did see that she's featured in some PBS videos. Her being there though says a lot of how PBS' standards have fallen if they're willing to hire woke content producers like her. I remember they had a show about videogames that was hosted by that SJW prick Jamin Warren.

Really, what disappoints me about Lindsay the most is how she and the rest of her woke posse handled the break off from Channel Awesome. Now I'm not excusing Doug Walker or the rest of the CA of any wrongdoing. If they were bad bosses like Lindsay and the others claim they deserve to be called out. But way before the blowup Lindsay was all praises for Doug and kept complimenting him on what a nice guy he was. Then she does a complete 180 and calls him out for all sorts of shit? All this flip flopping makes it hard to believe which story is true. She also comes off as ungrateful for all that Doug Walker did for her. Like it or not Lindsay was discovered by Doug and gave her first exposure in the first place.

I love them for that. Mike and the rest are not afraid to make fun of the latest pop culture trends and how people get obsessed with them. Their brave stand against the SJW outrage over Ghostbusters 2016 is the best example of this. They didn't cave when mainstream media was attacking people like James Rolfe for daring to speak out and being labeled as misogynists just for not liking the film. The movie being bad and bombing had to have been a great vindication for the RLM crew.

Still boggles my mind how ANYONE could take offense to Rolfe not wanting to see Ghostbusters reboot. Is everything seen through the lens of misogyny/racism nowadays?

As for RLM, I don't always agree on their views (I'm a prequel apologist) but I love watching their stuff.

they do made offensive comments from time to time. but they aren't world famous people, they are just drunk assholes talking mostly about Star Wars on the internet. this has been a thing since the '70s. this isn't Bill Maher cracking jokes about slavery while having congresspeople and official heads of state on his show. they have the kid from Home Alone, those two guys from Canada, and their support crew like Jack who i bet does a lot of stuff behind the scenes. they make shoddy independent b-movies and worship pulp cinema. i know people like this, i grew up around them.

to me they represent a democratic voice in this era of media monopoly. i feel like in the 90s the internet was a true Wild West, and i was there. i had a Beatles bootleg website before MP3s were even a thing. this was years before any social media, before Myspace, before Friendster, before Napster. all those services iterated and grew, as the tech infrastructure grew, and it became big business, now the corporations basically run everything. true, technology makes media production & distribution democratized, but the individual must navigate a marketplace of ideas flooded by Big Media.

how have they monopolized the internet?
1 - Old Media still produces tons of mass published content. This content will then by definition be more popular based on number count, and thus, promoted more in any decent search algorithm. The more attention something gets, the more it is promoted. This is the theory of clickbait. High numbers fuels the internet.

2 - New Media is largely owned by Old Media. Death of Monoculture kind of a myth. All the tv & movie networks of the past own the streaming services of the present. True there is far greater space for individualized content, and near-total democratization of the tools of media production, but Big Media still dominates the global conversation.

3 - Hyper Consumers. Gatekeepers, sheepherders, witch hunters that crusade against "toxic fandom". Socialist Corporate Rebels. Self satisfied nihilistic capitalists who smugly harass those with differing opinions on media. These NPCs and drones make up the echo chamber which Old Media yells into. The echo chamber is really a toilet, and we are in there as well, swirling around in the shit. They love it and want us to eat it and be as happy as they are.

lol thanks for telling me about white fragility, angry white man in a metal hockey mask
Does he not realize that his avatar is from a movie that stars Mel Gibson?

:messenger_tears_of_joy:

Do these people think they are clever writing this shit? You can literally freestyle these kind of half thoughts and get a blue checkmark. It doesn't take talent, it's not of value, and that's why it's drying up thank goodness.

The boys are back, again! Talking comic con, Picard, streaming services, and MidSommar

I haven’t seen MidSommar yet so I can’t watxh that part of video. Time stamps are in description

yeah but they missed a chance to do a beam me up joke

the more they talk about this Picard thing, the more it feels like everything else, where the writers are going to be all meta and self-conscious, and they are going to deliver the Picard "that fans know and love" rather than attempt to tell the story about the guy who was famously a closed off, private person. i like them bringing up how big a deal it was for him to just sit in on his crew's weekly poker meetings. TNG explored him in depth already, with a subtly and a nuance. it'll be hard for them to pull this off (Stewart can probably do a lot of the heavy lifting for them tho).

this is one of the big problems with these long running franchises. at a certain point the work enters the public consciousness and influences all future work. there arise these meta fan narratives which are fed back into the work itself. it becomes it's own echo chamber. the fact that filmmakers are calling themselves "lifelong fans" and "promising to listen to the fans" all the time is a sickness IMO that is killing these once vital properties. the minute an artist is second guessing themselves, the work is compromised. it is an unfortunate inevitability for many creative endeavors but feels like nowadays it's everyone's MO.

Pretty on-point video for me. Already expressed my disdain for more superhero movies in the other threads. Comic-con in general is a culture that I will never understand. "I love standing in lines to be advertised to" pretty much summed it all up.

When I was a kid in San Diego I remember going to Comic Con and it being nothing like what it seems to be now.

Exactly. This phenomenon ruins every pop-culture product eventually in the current climate. Ideas that were generated in the course of serving various specific narratives suddenly just become part of the furniture.

Example: Picard Day. It was shown only in a single episode, written to illustrate the kind of relationship Riker and Picard have, where Picard is socially very formal yet Riker can tease him in a good-natured way on the right occasions. This was simply a lead-up to an incident later in the episode that reveals Riker's past obsession with hierarchical duty under a former captain. But now we'll get "Picard Day!" out of the blue just because.... 'member that, fans?

Over time, everything becomes fan-fiction of itself, and all characters become cosplays of themselves. The whole atmosphere of fan communities and identities today--spoon-fed by corporations chasing profit--has distinctly terrible consequences for all fiction once it reaches popularity.

Probably what happens when something that was somewhat niche (comic books being mostly for nerds) goes mainstream. That and we also live in this "hype culture". It's weird.
my friend is a karaoke superhero who has been active for two decades, she knew some of the people who started DragonCon, and she has performed there every year. they make her do volunteer work on top of her performance, which IMO is a bit exploitative, particularly as she is a disabled person with severe autism. however, she gets to play (in a side room on the 2nd floor basement area to 10 people) and make a little money selling her CDs and tapes, and free attendance to the convention, so she's happy w the arrangement. Danger Woman if you want to look her up.

she used to play shows at this friend of mine's house in rural Georgia. we put on DIY punk house shows at this place for some time in the late 90s. my friends who lived there were film nerds like RLM for years. their basement was just filled with toys, comics, records, VHS tapes, action figures, makeshift stages & studios. once i went to their house and saw this movie about a killer lawnmower, where the blood was yellow paint, it was hilarious. these were kids that made their own horror and b movies. they used to put on concerts and shows at their house. videotaped DIY backyard wrestling on trampoline was a thing at one point. now they work on Walking Dead and stuff. last year we hung out for the first time in years, and i tried to talk to them about Star Wars or Marvel movies, and they hadn't seen any of them, said they can't stand the stuff. lol.

I like watching trailers of upcoming movies and listening to panels relating to the latter as much as next guy. But I can do that from the comfort of my own home, as the internet has made things convenient for someone like me.

What's the point of lining up for hours just to attend these panels? Bragging rights? You're not a true fan unless you may a sabbatical to Comic-Con once in your life? Are we talking about San Diego or Mecca?

If I wanted to attend Comic-Con, I'd do it for, you know, comics, as stated in the title. All these movie panels should be a sideshow and not the main attraction. Like when Star Wars first made it's debut at the Con in 1976.

Without spoiling, do they recommend watching it? I've seen references to the show on /tv/ but I'm on the fence on even giving it a shot.

Rich and Jay talk about The Boys

Haven't watched it yet but I expect high praise, given the quality of the series.

Obligatory Spoiler Warning

I’m glad they covered this.

I’m a huge fan of the comic. Was somewhat letdown by season one of show. Thought it was just decent.

Looking forward to seeing what The Fellas thought about The Boys
