Anyone seen any good movies lately?

Let's see:

Deadpool 2 (super-duper cut). Finally got around to watching this, was ok not great. Tries too hard and ultimately is kinda wearing after awhile, mainly though it falls flat whenever it tries to be more than just irreverent. Forgettable. 6/10

Shazam. Starts out really well, but kinda falls apart past the midway point, turning into a shitty cgi cartoon by the end, selling out its likeable cast in the process. Probably being harsh in giving this a 6/10, but the third act is such a mess that it drags the overall impression down.

Hellboy (2019). Ehhh, this is a mess, but I found it generally a more entertaining mess than I expected. CG is frequently dreadful (although to be fair both Deadpool 2 an Shazam had their rough spots too) but it occasionally shows flashes of class and invention like the Baba Yaga scenes and some of the insert mayhem in the end apocalypse scenes. Objectively it deserves lower but I'd give it a 7/10 because I had more fun with it despite its many shortcomings than with either of my other cape-shit watches.

Dark Age. I've had this fairly obscure 1987 Aussie killer croc movie on my pile of shame for ages and dug it out as palate cleanser. Entertaining and remarkably well-shot for its budget (an early work by Peter Jackson's DP on Kong/LOTR trilogy) its well worth seeking out for ozploitation connoisseurs. 7/10

Terrifier. Now this was a nice find. An actually good modern throwback to grindhouse slashers of yesteryear with plenty of nasty practical gore and a genuinely memorable killer in Art the Clown. It even has an appropriately grungy look rather than the pristine visuals that most modern schlock has thanks to the rise of digital cinematography. Liked this a lot, 8/10.

Aterrados/Terrified. Good heavens, another modern horror movie that doesn't suck. Its a fucking miracle in these days. This Argentinian spookfest is best approached knowing as little as possible about it up-front, but will please and surprise even long-standing genre fans like myself. The director has already been poached by Hollywood to direct an English language (and no doubt inferior) remake, so enjoy it while you can. 8/10

I saw On Her Majesty's Secret Service for the first time not long ago. It was better than I expected and George Lazenby was great as Bond. I'm sad that it never got a proper sequel. Sean Connery comes back in the next movie and the revenge isn't a big part of the movie. Connery should have been in both movies.

I watched Hobbs and Shaw yesterday. The Rock and Strathem are great together, many hilarious lines. Overall the film was above average though and I love all of the F&F movies except 2 and 4, those two were just above average.
So yeah, Hobbs and Shaw probaby sits between F&F 2 and 4 for me.

Saw Alien 1 and 2 recently and those movies hold up surprisingly well even now.

Apart from that also watched Prometheus and Covenant and while a few parts were tiring had a good time overall.

Happy Death Day.
Was a good film with a solid twist. 8/10.

But I didn’t like how
she went to hospital due to prior deaths which later goes largely ignored despite having more deaths after that point.

Justo saw "El Hijo", an Argentinian movie on Netflix.
The concept was interesting but the entire movie is spent building some big conclusion that just neve comes.
I was actually liking it until the end but in this particular case, because of the plot and structure, the shitty ending really makes the entire movies retroactively worse.

4/10

Watched Rocky (1976) last night. I had no idea that the actual storyline was "I'm the champ and want to fight a random nobody because reasons", but damn was it ever amazing.

Destination wedding. Some pretty funny lines and how and Keanu's attitude towards relationships really mirrored my views.

Death Wish (2018) - 6.5/10
Great soundtrack. Beach Boys, Chief Keef, and AC/DC. Prime boomercore with a dash of zoomer.
Pretty pussy they changed the plot from the original though. Good ol modern day political correctness! Pretty violent though.
BRUHS THE ELEVATOR SCENE!!

I also watched a Korean horror film over the weekend called Tale of Two Sisters. Pretty darn good and pretty darn freaky at times. Bit of a mind twister too.
The movie really did have me guessing and thinking about what was happening throughout the whole narrative.
If you like horror you should definitely check it out if you haven't done so yet.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood: This one will absolutely stick with me and goes down as a personal favorite. Already been to theater twice for it. 10/10

Hellboy: We turned this one off after about 10 minutes. You can tell right away that something is very off with this movie. Gave this one a shot against my better judgment as I''m a fan of Marshall and Harbour, but nah.

Longshot: I wasn't looking forward to this one at all, but it was decent thanks to Charlize Theron having incredible chemistry with apparently anyone. She's somehow pulled it off with Seth Macfarlane, and now Rogen. You know what you'll be getting but it isn't bad. 6/10

rewatched Repo Man over the weekend. it's funny how little actually happens in that movie. it's really a mess, especially the end, when things just start happening really fast. but it's still a lot of fun, thanks to the cast, who are wonderful, and the soundtrack, which is great, and the desolate Cali punk vibes. at some parts i feel like they are making fun of punk as much as celebrating it, the whole "I blame society" speech by the dying armed robber is brilliant. i find Emilio Estevez's character very interesting and complex. there are interesting class dynamics in play, and the repo characters with their varying motivations feel like refugees from an old Western. the repo life is their frontier. then again the glowing classic car seems ripped right out of a 60s sci fi pulp film, as do the secret men in black, and the lady with the metal hand, New Age updates on that old trope. this movie has it all. some classic quotes too! "Plate of Shrimp"

I watched a weird and interesting horror movie over the weekend called "Livescream"

Dude streams a horror game, his viewers start dying. Worth checking out for it being quite different. The main actor carries the film itself and is quite believable most of the movie.

Watched Memories of Murder last night. The director Bong Joon-Ho is definitely on his A-game with this film. It was brilliant all the way through and I loved his camera work. There is a surprisingly large amount of humour in the film for such a dark subject matter, really hits home how incompetent the local police detectives are though.

Some of the scenes looked really familiar as I watched it and I eventually realised I had seen it in an episode of Every Frame a Painting on Youtube.

Kingdom of Heaven (directors cut) - recommended by a friend as never seen and although quite long, 3h 10, the time flew by. Will certainly get the UHD if it ever gets released.

Dragged Across Concrete was way too long. Pretty slow. Decent though

Loved it but it was sort of like being, well, Dragged Across Concrete for half the running time

It deeply triggers turbolibs as well simply by having Mel Gibson in it which is a bonus

Godzilla - Final Wars - Bloody bonkers, a mishmash of so many other film concepts it's hilarious. Recommended though

The film that introduced me to Korean cinema and Bong Joon-Ho's finest work. I really like the fact that you mention the humor in this film because I think it's absolutely incredible how Bong Joon-Ho takes a very tense scene and with very little dialogue makes light of it all with a touch of humor while still keeping the tone completely intact.

How was Brightburn???? Its up on digital and is it worth a buy???

I'd say watch before buying. It has potential but doesn't quite reach that potential.

We watched Thirst last night and it was completely not what I expected. It's a Korean film about a priest that becomes a vampire. I was expecting horror but what I got was a weird twisted love story. Not the best film ever but I'm still happy I watched it. It can't compare to Park Chan-wook's Oldboy!

I really like Song Kang-ho as an actor, he was great in Memories of Murder, hilarious in The Host and I really enjoyed him in this too. And Kim Ok-vin is so damn hot and is great at playing a psychopath.

I still recommend checking this one out due to how weird it is.

It was okay. I'd say rent over buy.

Re-watched The Town with Affleck, Renner, Hamm, Hall and Blake Lively. Not a bad heist movie although I much prefer Heat.

Watched Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw and I'm actually surprised. The movie was fun from start to end and the action scenes were directed so damn good

There's this bike in the movie that I couldn't get over. Straight outta Transformers!

Good movie to watch if you appreciate well directed action scenes and of course a fancy car giving you a boner

Never Say Never Again

I had seen other Sean Connery Bond movies but not this one. It was great and I enjoyed it more than Octopyssy that was released in the same year. Connery is the best Bond.

I started watching Kaili Blues last night, which has very ambiguous tone. It seems to take a lot some inspiration from Stalker, especially as it name-dropped Roadside Picnic at one point. Aside from that, it has a type of Lynchian vibe, suggesting something deep and dark rooted at the heart of this particular Chinese community.

I'll let you know how it ends.

I watched Creep Van on Amazon Prime on Wednesday night. Went in with super low expectations for a b horror movie, and I ended up loving it more than I probably should.

The kills are the highlight, inventive and super gorey. I think they wrote the script around their spfx ideas. A few really good boobie scenes, and one over the top sex scene ending with a great kill.

Highly recommend Creep Van.

Blondie in that movie gave me a boner. It was pretty good! The only annoying thing I found was how they kept on going with the whole "we hate each other" shtick. The Rock being self aware is a bit annoying, but overall a fun flick! Did you notice how it turned from night to day during the last act out of nowhere?

Oh yeah she was solid. Yeah they should’ve toned it down a bit but I got out of their hate relationships with great roasts. It wasn’t actually night, it was dawn but yeah, was weird how it became morning all of a sudden.
