“NEW” Nintendo Switch review and Unboxing ( revision with Mariko SOC)

So for the second one, if I’m understanding you correctly, it was basically just reactivating the account on the same Switch, right?

I’m inclined to believe it’ll work out the way you describe...wondering if anyone can provide more confirmation. Worst case scenario I guess is I have to call Nintendo with the serials and have them switch over the licenses (like they’d do on lost/stolen 3DS systems).

Don’t think my Gamestop has any of the new ones yet anyway.
First scenario was two different switches, second scenario was the same switch.
It worked pretty well in both cases.
What if I want to have my games on two Switch units like Sony permits with the PS4, can I do that?
Afaik how it works is you can have the same account on multiple systems, but only the active/primary system will allow digital games to be played by all guest acounts on that system. The secondary system will only allow the the account that owns the games to play it. (And whether or not you can play them offline is another question.) So its sorta similar to what xbox/ps4 does.

That still wouldn’t explain almost twice the battery life, RAM doesn’t draw much power to begin with.
There’s more to the story than just low power RAM.
According to the WSJ the Switch is using IGZO displays made by SHARP, that would reduce the screen's power consumption by around 90%.

From the WSJ article:
"Sharp Corp. is supplying it's IGZO display panels to Nintendo Co.’s new videogame machines, a top executive said, a boost for Sharp as it tries to spread its version of advanced display technology.
IGZO—indium gallium zinc oxide—is a semiconducting material that the Osaka-based display maker was first to use in mass-produced display panels. Its features include high resolution, low energy consumption and durability."

"People familiar with Nintendo’s product planning say it has ideas for further updates to the Switch lineup after those two models to make the platform’s lifecycle long. Chief Executive Shuntaro Furukawa has said the company is always working on new hardware."

Wonder if the new display has better image quality over the old screen, not that the old screen was bad but from what I know IGZO display provides a quicker response time but the technology is very expensive .

Wonder what exactly do they mean with this, does this indicate they might be working on a PRO model?
Very interesting article from WSJ , makes want to buy a new Switch just to compare.

Julien Chieze has said they're working on a Pro model that's a full sized tablet for 2020, I know he's sketchy, but he was right about the Lite launching in three colors.

And there is Nvidia's tablet/laptop hybrid project, code-named 'Mystique', that once had a TX2 in it and then an Xavier.
Nvidia has stated many times before that they would never put out a product that would compete with one of their customer's products, so I don't think it's a Shield tablet.

Info on Mystique here:

More rumors on a new line of shield products:

I would love to see a XL version of the switch but by full size tablet do they mean like a 10” screen?
That would be way to big in my opinion, I just want a screen big enough to fill the empty space where the thick bezels are maybe 7-8” screen is doable.
But forget that, we’re just talking hypothetical rumors , I wish Digital Foundry would get one of these new Switch’s and do a thorough breakdown and run tests that tell us what we’re actually getting with the new hardware.

Picked one up at Gamestop last night along with FE3H. Originally sold my Switch to get a Lite but came to a realization that Nintendo probably removed the chip that outputs video so not even homebrew will allow it to dock, and that I don't want to give up tv play.

Plus the better battery life pretty much makes the lite redundant.

So would I. Getting harder for me to focus on small text and stuff due to my age. I think we've all seen an older relative trying to read a birthday card by moving it closer and farther to their eyes repeatedly trying to focus (put on your glasses!). I'm doing that with my Switch when trying to play it in portable mode.

Was hopoing that they snuck in compatibility with Game Gear carts. But I guess not.

Longer battery is pretty neat. But making it removable would have been much better.

Spawn wave has the best unboxing until now .. he open it up and have side by side pic between the New and old chip

New video -- he takes apart the new Joy-Con.

It's unclear whether the stick has been improved. SpawnWave guy doesn't think so, but the part number seems to have advanced and the internal center looks more raised -- potentially reducing wear on the pads?

Anyone out there actually test the system notice any type of performance improvement in actual games? Zelda: BOTW for example?

I'd have to think Nintendo *could* conceivably give developers the option of a "boost mode" while docked for a moderate performance increase?!

Is it confirmed these revision models are rocking the new Sharp displays? I thought they were in reference to future Switch iterations?

Cheers!

I’ve been thinking of getting one but like you but have yet to see anyone say there is any substantial improvement in games, first video I posted the guy says there is a bit of stability improvement with less frames dropped in DOOM , but that hasn’t been confirmed.

Conceivably yes.

Not yet, but that’s the impression I get too.

so to make it short... surprise surprise, DreamcastGuy was talking out of his ass again...
how does he have any subscribers left? his content is always full of misinformation, half assed data/info and he himself has absolutely no idea what he is talking about whenever I had to sit through one of his videos

everyone who tested the new Switch so far basically confirmed that literally everything that hack said is complete bullshit...
the materials feel the same, the in game performance is identical if not slightly worse (but that's also unlikely) and all that's really different is the battery life, as advertised...

Has anyone confirmed the heat amount being the same or worse? When I'm playing e.g. Yoshi's - it gets so warm to hold the OG Switch.

Finally some good analysis about the new Switch.

Any word on whether or not the sticks are actually improved?
This is the only thing that matters. I have never had such infuriating controllers as the joycons. They've been drifting for months and i refuse to buy new ones at their current price, only to have them start drifting again after a few months. Right now i'm waiting for a DIY repair kit from amazon but i have no experience doing this and it should not be necessary

As expected there's no difference when it comes to the screen compared to the previous version. Expected but still a shame. The resolution and colour is fine but the screen is unusable when sitting outside. Rendering the portable aspect of the Switch mostly useless for me. Was really surprised when I first tried it myself and saw that none of the reviews (that I saw/read) had even commented on that.

amazon.it has the new versions listed for release on September 9th! Guess that's around when they'll show up in EU stores.

If you're in North America Nintendo will repair them for free regardless of whether or not they're under warranty, but yeah they're the worst controllers I've used in a long, long time. At least from a build quality and durability standpoint.

I’ve been to a couple of stores with no luck finding one yet, probably won’t buy one but looking to see if they are available.
I see some people are getting them but anybody else have any luck?

I got one at GameStop today. They said they’ve had them for about a week now but it depends on the location. Call ahead and ask to be sure. Get real specific with them because some of the rank and file don’t know about this version or why it’s any different. Had one person tell me “Oh the Switch pro you mean? It’ll probably be out for the holidays” after I explained it to her.

Alright, all - just picked up a new Switch at Target this evening (they just got them in today).

First things first - I don't see (with my naked eyes) any difference in brightness between my launch system and this new one. I suspect there may be variances between systems, here.

HOWEVER, the color temperature difference is HUGE. The new Switch is night and day much more neutral/natural than the OG Switch, and this is something that's obvious in everything. Even blacks/greys in the menus look miles better due to the temperature shifting toward the neutral. I wouldn't be surprised if this is incredibly close to D65K.

I need to see how warm the new Switch gets when I get to gaming with it, but other than that, it's a Nintendo Switch, with better battery life, and a much more accurate display temperature.

And to add to this, even sitting, idling on my old Nintendo Switch home screen has the fan on the whole time. On the new Switch I've been sitting re-downloading all my titles with the screen on, and the fan hasn't even come on yet.

Would be great if you can tell us how warm it gets and if you can hear the fans when gaming.
I’m still on the fence about getting one but the increased battery life is really tempting, but if it runs cooler with less fan noise it just might be worth it.

You didn't put the microsd from the old switch in the new one? 0o

I tried this (I didn’t do a system transfer from my old Switch because I traded it towards the new one). Even once you’ve linked your account to the new system, it recognizes the memory card as belonging to another system and reformats it before it can be used.

If you do a system transfer, you can probably just pop in the memory card and get going (that’s how it was on 3DS anyway).

Gonna suck then when I get the new switch and a 1TB microsd... :lollipop_confounded:

a much more accurate display temperature.
Pretty sure this depends of the panel you have in your Switch. I have a day one Switch with the Japanese panel and color temperature does not feel yellowish at all. It is extremely clear and white.

OG display panel is good and bright enough, didn’t here anybody ever complaining about the display quality, size and rez sure but not the panel colors .

That’s correct. The OG Switch is more blue-white. The new Switch “revision” is more neutral.

I don't like it when expensive gaming hardware gets obsolete after such little while.
I wouldn’t call the OG Switch obsolete because of better battery life, sure it’s great for people that haven’t bought one yet but I don’t think many people are trading in there old Switch’s for this model.
I have thought about it but decided to wait for the rumored PRO model if it ever comes out. I can live with 2-3 hours of gaming in portable mode.
