30 Nights of film: Tackle that Backlog

Hey Film GAF

I was recently marvelling at the sheer number of films that I have that I just haven't gotten around to watching and thought given it's a little quiet on the game front to actually start going through some of these, and then I thought why not make it a thing others might want to do also?

Simple rules:

  1. Watch 30 films in 30 days (one a night would be good, but fit it to your circumstances)
  2. Not a film you've watched before (it's easy to fall back on comfort viewing I find)
  3. A quick review

A typical post might be: -

1. The Last of the Mohicans

"War of independence drama by Michael Mann, with a top-notch soundtrack and plenty of action throughout, also whatever happened to Madeline Stowe? 10/10 would watch again. "

Did mean to post this at the beginning of the month but personal circs got in the way and I figure September is when things get busy again game-wise.

No prizes, just the fun of participation.

1. The Outsider (Netflix)

I remember this talked about when it was released but I never got around to seeing it until now. Beyond the fact that I knew it had Jared Leto in and was about the Yakuza, I didn't really know that much about it, so I was a bit taken back that it was in fact a period piece (it's set in 1954 post-WW2 Japan). Surprisingly a lot more artsy than I was expecting (beautifully shot), but it suffers unfortunately from Leto looking a little too otherworldly for his own good, and given that ostensively the character ends up becoming embroiled with a Yakuza family as an enforcer it might have benefited if they'd gone for someone with a bit more physicality to him (Originally Tom Hardy was down for the role, but unfortunately dropped out). 6/10

1. Serbuan Maut

Pretty litty movie fam. Felt like 90 mins of action and 10 mins of plot. Can't believe they shot some kid in the neck in slow mo. More action movies need slow mo. 7.5/10

I'm surprised you've not seen the raid before. Great action film. You definitely should watch the sequel also.

Started last night, so I guess I should shoot for 30 films by September, 6th. Looks like I watched 17 films in July. And I thought that was a lot. Whew.

1. Downrange- Pretty good one, and gory. It's filmed in one location throughout the movie, so that's kinda cool.

I don't really watch modern movies. I plan on watching the sequel sometime. Maybe during this month :goog_unsure:

Man, The Raid 2 is something else. I love the first, but the sequel opens up in such a massive way. More of everything. One of the best car chase sequences ever committed to film. Once you've watched the movie, do yourself a favour and watch the videos on how they did it. It's bonkers.

Been on a marvel binge(All ratings are based on Marvel films. I'm not going to compare Thor with Dark Knight or Insomnia) so:

Dr strange

Benedict Cumberbatch is too weird to look at, so this is the first film I've seen him in. It was great, loads of good special effects, interesting story, enemy and friend. Plus, Rachel McAdams (who is 10/10). Out of all of the Marvel 'standalone' films, this is one of the best. 8/10

Thor ragnarok

Terrible. Didn't make sense. Saved only by the acting of the crew; Thompson (yes I liked her), Hemsworth, Ruffalo and of course Cate Blanchett (Although she did the same evil voice she used for Stewie's lover in Family Guy). Apart from that is was a large waste of time. 4/10

Guardians of the galaxy 1 and 2

Loved them. Really nice story, likable characters, good strong cast and impressive visuals. A different take on the 'team' films and I really enjoyed them both. 9/10

Infinity war

Boring af. Most boring Avengers film out of the series. It's a compilation of 10 minute clips, giving a summary of all of the different heroes (wayyyyyy too many to give a shit about). If it wasn't for the last 15 minutes with Thanos this movie would have been 4/10. As it stands, it's a 5/10

Captain Marvel

Good film. Supporting cast were pretty much a let down. Some of the reading of the supporting cast was hilariously poor for a blockbuster film. That being said, I really like Brie. I think she is a good actress and played the roll very well. Good visuals and an enjoyable film all around. 7/10

End game

Yep, good film. Enjoyable blockbuster flick. Great cast. Maybe a little bit too cheesy in some parts. The spoiler with Stark was abvious because Dr Strange told him It would happen in Infinity war. Good battle at the end, if not a little short. I would have liked to have seen Thanos 'power up' or 'level up' to continue the fight across more varied arenas. Other than it was alright. Bonus points for Marvel's new hair cut, it suits the character better. 7/10

2. Gold

Loosely based on true events, Matthew McConaughey plays a down on his luck Gold prospector who partners up with Geologist Michael Acosta looking for Gold in Indonesia, during the 80s and strikes it rich in the Jungle. This was a bit of a crash and burn movie for McConaughey coming not too soon after his Oscar turn in Dallas Buyers Club. In terms of method, like DBC MM goes all in, but the inherent problem is that unfortunately, the character he plays is such a goddam wretched specimen of flop sweat desperation that it's hard to actually want to root for him and albeit the film doesn't hit the crass notes of the Wolf of Wallstreet it certainly dabbles in the same waters. On the positives Bryce Dallas Howard also stars is in it as his long-suffering girlfriend/wife and looks great. 6/10

1. Violent Shit
tumblr_pi4qsaXco41xvqvano1_r1_400.gif

Shot in 1989 on a camcorder, Violent Shit starts off with a scene with a young boy plays out in the woods with a red ball. Bad video effects such as pixelation and wipes are the star as the opening credits begin and go on and on... then this kid gets home and his mom bitches at him for staying out late. Nein, nien Mutter. The kid grabs a cleaver and goes to work. This kid is named Karl, and soon after he talks to Satan, he is named the Karl The Butcher Shitter!

Amongst all the murdering chaos, he runs into the woods, gets himself another cleaver and a funny metal mask, and starts finding more people to kill. There's also poorly done flashbacks and odd religious vignettes, where Karl slices open the stomach of Christ, who is being crucified on the cross, and climbs on in. Then later a guy in a D.R.I. jacket gets his dick ripped off and a woman gets stabbed in the vagina and sliced open from there. This one way overuses some pretty bad late 80’s video effects but delivers in the gore department. This cheap flick is the first in a trilogy.

2. Grindhouse
Since it's literally 2 movies I'm gonna count it as 2 movies. If you're not down with that I got 2 words for ya
tenor.gif

2. Planet Terror

Literally just a stupid modern zombie movie. I feel like they just shoved this in as a double feature with Toesucker's movie because they're friends. Carmen Electra's tits were good. The blood shooting out everywhere was satisfying. The humor was awful. And who thought it was a good idea to have a manlet play the main character? Couldn't take him seriously at all. 5/10

3. Death Proof

This at least looked like a grindhouse movie pretty much. Well the first half anyway. That one girl had some juicy ass lips on god. This shit was boring. Just a bunch of talking. I mean the chase at the end was nice but basically the rest of the movie was just talking about nothing. What a disappointment. 6/10

3.Northmen: A viking Saga

Pretty cheesy action-adventure about a small band of exiled Vikings who find themselves stranded in Scotland and look to escape whilst being pursued by a bunch of bloodthirsty mercenaries. I think it's fair to say any attempt at historical accuracy went out the window fairly early on, and it's basically dark ages dress up for Tom Hopper and Ed Skrien as the former tries lead his companions to safety while the latter pursues with ever-increasing murderous rage. 2014 Oscar snubs all round. 5/10

Not a fan. She ain't terrible or anything though. Pretty annoyed that MEW was in it, said barely and lines and they basically left her to get raped

Snuck in a second film for the evening

4. Hostiles

Period drama with Christian Bale as a seasoned cynical US Cavalryman whose tasked with taking a dying Cheyenne Chief (Wes Studi) from internment in New Mexico up to Montana. This is a banging film. Highly recommended. I ain't going to say more than that. Bale is excellent as ever, great supporting cast also, and fantastic cinematography 8.5/10

Little LTTP but watched 4 movies in the last few days that I remember:

1.A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001)
Pinocchio meets Blade runner in a Spielberg movie. Very enjoyable despite it's 2h30 length. 8/10

2.Joe (2013)
It's dark, bleak and made me feel sad. In a good way i guess? 7/10

3.Brightburn (2019) - 08th august 2019
Movie would be better if presented as a Vilain introduction movie than an horror one. Ending of the movie / during the credit makes me want to see a brightburn 2... 6.5/10

4.My Hero Academia: Two Heroes (2018) - 08th august 2019
Recently got into that anime. to be watched after season 3 episode 20 i think. Extremely enjoyable but requires prior knowledge. 9/10

5.Mystic River (2003) - 09th august 2019
I feel like I can't really talk about the movie without spoiling it. There's one too many "coincidences" that just puts it beyond belief. all in all wouldn't tell not to watch it but not recommending it. 6/10

6. Batman vs Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2019) - 10th august 2019
Really fun crossover where the TMNTs follow shredder to gotham. hilarity ensues. Fun action included. 9/10

*scores are based on enjoyment and feeling towards the movie, not necessarily a quality based score.

5. Red Sparrow

In many ways quite good a choice for Jennifer Lawrence as she's not exactly the most emotive of actresses, so she does a good job of playing a fairly inscrutable Russian Ice Princess, but the actual plot itself is kind of convoluted and it feels like a story that would have been better served if it was spun into a 5 part mini-series versus having to be crammed into a 2 hour film. 6/10

2. Mad Max Fury Road
giphy.gif

Just saw it and holy shit, this is not a Mad Max film. It's Tom Hardy being haunted by a ghost girl while being backseat between Charlize Theron., The Cars that ate Paris and the other dames dealing with breeding and the war boys, Doof Warrior and other baddies.

3. Bat Pussy
bat-pussy-header.gif

A no-name porn with two ugly people that cannot even fuck one another talking shit while the Dark Knight knock-off, Bat Pussy bounces along on a bouncy ball and interrupts the non-coitus carnage. Pure trash in the best possible way, and oddly enough unforgettable.

6. Brightburn

Gotta say that tbh, if you've seen the trailer then you've pretty much seen the film. It's not a bad film with that said the kid is suitably creepy, but it's route one all the way. 6/10

7. Shot Caller

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jamie Lannister as most know him) turns in a compelling performance in this fairly tight crime drama as a recently released convict charged with managing an arms deal for his fellow gang members. Gripping. 8.5/10 recommended.

I like the assessment, but still a pretty enjoyable film I found.

4. Mandy
mandy-animation.gif

The follow up to director Panos Cosmatos' Beyond The Black Rainbow has Nic Cage is full gonzo mode. A creepy cult leader is obsessed with his girlfriend and without giving too much away, Cage is going to rage. The first half of the film has an odd, otherworld-y feel and the latter half goes into full on thrash mode that would be the best film Troma ever made if they were somewhat serious as in their early days. It could've been shortened by 30 minutes, but really enjoyed this film. The director has a thing for head melting flesh, and the Cheddar Goblin thing seems straight out of an Adult Swim infomercial

5. Burst City
tumblr_m6fvkdxuG41qg39ewo1_500.gif

A Japanese post-apocalyptic/dystopian musical film about a bunch of punks fighting/singing about not having a nuclear power plan being built in Tokyo with a side story of a quiet guy and his intense friend ride their bikes trying to find a killer. There's car racing, partying and fighting to the soundtrack of Japanese punk bands The Rockers and The Stalin. This one is a wild, feature length music video disguised as a film.

8. Molly's game

Aaron Sorkin wrote and directed this adaptation of the real-life story of Molly Bloom, an Olympic hopeful who ended up running several high-end poker games in both LA & New York before things go drastically wrong for her as a result of an FBI investigation. Jessica Chastain confidently strides through the role looking mesmeric throughout with Adris Alba is support, however, there are some odd casting choices for certain roles, not the least of which is Michael Cera as Player X, the Hollywood draw everyone apparently wants to play. Not a bad movie, but being Sorkin it's word-heavy and directorially he's no Fincher. 7.5/10

Basically some little girls get kidnapped and trained to be assassins on some island where they can't escape. THEY KILLED MULITPLE KIDS IN LIKE THE FIRST 10 MINUTES. Then they grow up and kill people. Some nice HLA in the showers. All the girls left get drugged and raped. I had to mention this because the dudes that rape them all high 5 each other while they're fucking. Some really cool over the top martial arts shit in this. Like anime style stuff you can't do irl. Decently enjoyable film. 7/10

Interesting idea I've got about 70 blurays I haven't watched yet. Maybe this will get me to finish The Hobbit series.

Well after the 30 days challenge concludes I might make this a regular thing or simply do a weekly GAF film club, where you have to watch 1 new/unseen movie a week.

I don't enjoy personal challenges like this, something invariably happens that throws me off the plan and I just find it stressful.

I've been watching shit more regularly while I play games though in an effort to get off sub services and build a library.

Bought Ghost in the Shell (animated) and Gremlins for $5 each at walmart this weekend. I was surprised how little I enjoyed Gremlins. I used to watch it a lot when I was younger, and I'm not sure why really. It's got a really fucking weird tone for a Christmas movie, and it's not super effective at anything it tries to go for, horror, family comedy/drama, cutesy kids movie...I even found Gizmo pretty underwhelming having just watched Howard the Duck not too long ago.

The opening song was pure kino. For an action comedy this was a lot darker in places than I expected. The little girl from the later Halloween movies plays B-Willy's daughter in this. She's great in it and so is B-Willy. Never once got bored. 7.5/10

52 movie challenge.

Essentially.

I don't enjoy personal challenges like this, something invariably happens that throws me off the plan and I just find it stressful.

I have a tonne of unwatched films, and one film every night is not that difficult (and a film a week will be is easy street). Plus at weekends you slot in a few double features and you're golden. Last night I got back late (Monday is my shopping day) and after watching succession (best show on television no one is watching...) I only managed to watch half a film, but this evening I'll conclude that and pop another one as well. Simples.

9. Hitman: Agent 47 (2015)

I wasn't going in with high expectations, but this actually wasn't too bad tbh. Rupert Friend riding high of his role in Homeland fills the boots of Agent 47 in what is ostensively a fairly stylish looking mid-tier thriller which goes balletic combat that could best de described as John Wick lite. No ones winning any academy awards on the acting front but it was entertaining enough for the most part. 6/10

This film is the follow up to Sean Byrne's The Loved Ones. Ethan Embry stars alongside one of my favorite character actors, Pruitt Taylor Vince. A mix of The Amityville Horror and possibly a Dad version of Rosemary's Baby... if the baby was a tween outcast. I really enjoyed this film and Embry gives a great performance, as does Pruitt Taylor Vince. They even blast Sunn 0))) on the soundtrack. Knew nothing about this one and I really enjoyed it.

7. Black Devil Doll From Hell
xxvud-.gif

Chicago's only trash talking, raping ventriloquist dummy with dreads shot on video film. This movie is hilarious and odd. A (repressed?) religious woman finds a ventriloquist dummy at a second hand store and the store owner warns her about the dummy, its curse and how it always returns to the shop. OH MAN. The weird synth score is absolutely appropriate for this film, the shit the dummy says to the woman will crack you up. Z-grade, shot on video top tier trash. Bless this movie, for they don't make 'em like this anymore. Met the director and he's some normal dude, but something isn't there. He said he was a fan and influenced by The Twilight Zone. What was he drinking or smoking when he came up with this idea?

How did I know this was gonna be another movie about Keanu sulking, getting hunted down by a bunch of bland villains, all whilst he has his god mode and infinite ammo cheats on? These movies are such nothing. Some of the most bland and generic action movies I've ever seen. None of this is interesting or entertaining. Also fuck Ruby Rose with her shitty haircut dragging this movie down even more. Nobody likes you now fuck off. The CGI blood is back and as shitty as ever. Really takes me back to the PS3 era. Great job hollywood. The subtitles on the screen were also fucking annoying. Looked like the goddamn PS3/Spiderman movie font and takes you out of the movie seeing that garbage. Fuck modern hollywood garbage. I definitely won't be watching 3. 4.5/10

Yup. I used to be in a band the dude from Massacre Video was a fan of.
Fucking lucky. I've been trying to find that boxset because it looks so cool. The movie is apparently some shitty detective movie so I never bothered. One day I'll find a copy on ebay for less than 30 bucks. One day...
What kind of music did you guys play?
