Rumor: Lucas partially owns original Star Wars characters and because that Disney are pulling them out

Similar to Star Trek situation, Disney need to make any character or vehicle different from the original 6 movies to not pay part of merchandise to George Lucas.

Its believable. Lucas was always a step a head when it came to merchandising. He got the merchandising rights for the original triology because back then no one had any clue about selling toys etc... So it wouldn't surprise me if Lucas put a clause in there giving him royalties on his original creations.

Here is the problem, Disney forgot Star Wars was a series for kids. TFA relied on member berries but still had some adventure in it that it could attract some kid audiences, but there was still a bit of darkness/grittness to it. But then Rogue One, Solo and TLJ went full on YA/Adult. I just can't imagine what would be attractive to young male children in those movies. They aren't really lighthearted fun adventures for the whole family.

RO is a spy/heist movie with a bunch of asshole/shade of grey characters lead by a girl whose family was murdered in front of her. The whole movie is kinda dark and gritty and none of the worlds or people are something kids would be in awe of.

Solo is a movie about thieves and Solo's love for his GF. Again nothing that an 8 year old would really be into.

TLJ, movie is too gritty. One plot deals with a casino, we are talking kids, not James Bond fans. The other plot line is a slow boring chase where WOMANZ show that men are stupid dummies. And you can contrast Luke/Rey witih Yoda/Luke. Yoda was this cool funny looking puppet that spout wisdom to Luke that lived on this weird strange but kinda cool planet. Luke lives in NZ drinking green milk and he is an asshole who doesn't train Rey, who acts like an annoying toddler.

As much shit as the PT's get, Lucas knew what buttered his bread. He at least made attempts to keep it fun for kids and famalies. Sure he added in stupid I hate Geroge Bush BS into it, but there was a sense of adventure and cool worlds with good guys and bad guys. Heck even the EWOKS that everyone shat on was something for little kids to be attracted to in Star Wars. It lead to 2 spin off movies and a cartoon show.

You aren't making money on merchandise selling to man babies and little girls. Boys are the main source of $$$ for toys, video games, and action figures. But if your movie doesn't attract young boys then you aren't going to sell these things.

Oh well just go and blame toxic maculinty and misogny. Shit on your fanbase more that will for sure drive kids to buy the next Rose Tico action figure. I hope they bring out a new Holdo action figure with mulitple hair colors so I can buy it for my nephew I am sure he is dying to play with it.

didn't they buy the IP? all the rights? also they aren't pulling out the old characters, everything they do is a retread of OT media, including the upcoming Boba Fett/Obi Wan tv shows. this doesn't make sense.

tbh i have never seen the full contract. it is possible he has some license for old characters. but tbh that doesn't make any sense. why would they even buy it, if he is still making money off it? they didn't just buy a share in SW, they bought the entire company, right?

they really aren't consciously making them different. i'd argue they are trying for the safest OT callbacks possible. they are just shitty at making movies. you have seen JJ's Star Trek films, right?

Star Wars is just there to give the Marvel post production crew more time to finish up their new CGI sequence.

Lucas isn’t rebuying Star Wars. He will
Never touch the series again after showing the world he’s a hack without a lot of control and help. The prequels were and still are the worst Star Wars movies ever made. The Phantom Menace is close to unwatchably bad now.

Best case realistic scenario for any Disney
hater is Disney just shelves the IP. They aren’t selling it and Lucas certainly won’t touch it.

Sure... go ahead and kill everyone, I don't give a fuck, I personally would have preferred if these new movies took place like 100 years after episode VI (or before Episode I).
But can the new characters and stories at least be good? As bad as the prequels were even they had cooler and more likeable characters than these new ones. Darth Maul has like 3 lines of dialog and has had a bigger impact on pop culture than Rey, Finn or angsty Darth Vader

$1.33 billion.

Not dead. Just can’t milk it for lame side movies.

I don't think he meant financially.... Star Wars is still a big enough name that it will make them some decent money even if they continue to screw up with it. But as this big massively beloved franchise I could see it really diminishing. For me it has gone from hype when it got revived some years ago to bordering on irrelevance, and overall there seems to be less excitement for it.

As a side note, I've been visiting some toy stores this past week (looking for a birthday present for my nephew) and was surprised by how little Star Wars stuff there is. There was a ton of Marvel and there's still a ton of Frozen and stuff like that, on top of like a dozen TV shows I don't even know. But hardly any Star Wars. Of course it's just anecdotal but it wouldn't surprise me if it's the same in a lot of places.

20 years ago he fucked up Star Wars. Now people randomly love the prequels. Maybe in another 20 years people will randomly start loving the sequels.
I was 9 when I saw the prequels and they blew my mind. Darth Maul was legendary. Duel of Fates was legendary. Episode 2 was the most forgettable but still good. I think I was a freshman or a sophmore in high school when episode 3 released and shit was an emotional roller coaster and the most glorious CGI fest. Finding out "so that's what happened to Darth Vader" was some heavy shit at like 14 or 15.

I heard criticisms of Jar Jar and the prequels in general later on and was kind of pressured into agreeing but I ultimately ignored them. I think many others may have been on the same boat.

Especially now with these new Disney movies, they can look back at the prequels and realize actually that they weren't as bad as they thought they were. I can see how many straight up like em now.

you can't put a price on sparks
makes sense to me. even if Lucas had a 1% share, that's 1% more Disney could make off something they made

except no one likes what they made lul

People don't randomly love the prequels. It's because The Last Jedi wasn't a thing 20 years ago. Now they see the OT was flawed for sure but the lesser evil in comparison.

The last Jedi is in all ways superior to any of the prequels. If you don’t like it that’s fine but objectively it’s superior in any measurable way. Action pacing plot dialogue. The only thing the prequels have better is the memes making fun of them are better.

My problem was never the OT characters getting killed off, I expected that the moment Han Solo walked out on that platform. What pissed me off is how each and every one of them are nothing but sad, pathetic charicatures of who they once were. For Lando fans I'd suggest holding onto your buts, because I'm sure he fucked his life up somehow.

Oh, we sure wanted to have "real life people" depictions of the cool heroes of our childhoods 35 years later when we walked out of RotJ in 1983.

What's more fun for a lifelong fan than seeing a grim and miserable Luke Skywalker and a downtrodden Han Solo dying shortly after their introduction after waiting three decades for seeing those people again.

Thanks Disney.

You're not even disappointed in the slighted that Disney killed off any chance to see Leia, Luke and Han reunited on screen? :lollipop_confounded:

And it makes sense to humiliate characters you're trying to get rid off in favor to push other characters...

Turn Han into a selfish smuggler again that he was before and a dead beat father to boot, turn Luke into a recluse who's given up... etc

They burned it to the ground and salted the earth. There is no fixing. Nothing grows there now. Nothing lives there now. Birds won’t fly over it. The folk who once lived there have moved on to greener pastures and people who live nearby steer well clear lest they become afflicted with the blight.

I don't feel like watching yet another baseless, clickbait rumor Star Wars video because I don't want that shit in my recommended stuff, but if that video mentions something like killing off Han supporting their argument that shows how nothing they have on this matter. Harrison Ford wanted out since 6 and asked Lucas for it (and Lucas said, "dead Han doesn't sell toys". Add this along with why we got Ewoks in 6 and it's funny how only Disney is looked upon as obsessed with money over story and not Lucas......), there was no way 7 was going to end with Han still alive if Harrison agreed to return. Fans can get butthurt all they want about it, but Disney and JJ Abrams (and Rian Johnson, who I only mention because weirdly enough some fans blame him for the death despite Johnson having jack shit to do with 7) had no impact on Han ending up dead.

Phonepunk: dude, I've been told multiple times I'm not a "true fan", been told I can enjoy it but not argue it's a good movie, and once flat out told to kill myself simply because I think TLJ is excellent. So forgive me, but while I'm sure most people who dislike TLJ don't have their head up their ass, quite a few are a bunch of fucking jerks who think it's acceptable to act like entitled douchebags over something as non-consequential as a MOVIE. Oh, and funny you mentioned objectivity, considering on this very forum I had to put up with this guy who insisted TLJ was "objectively bad" and while I pointed out how that's a complete misuse of the word he started acting all entitled, talking about film school and shit because apparently film experts can just rewrite the fucking dictionary or something. Maybe you worded it poorly, but to me it's clear more entitled, asshole-ish behavior comes from the anti-TLJ side than the pro side.

I like TLJ over the prequels, but it's definitely not "in all ways superior" to them. I'd argue that TLJ also has pacing issues, especially once the casino subplot comes in, and its action scenes, while having really cool moments, are about on par with the prequels, which had the plus of offering more of them. But there's something that the sequel trilogy fundamentally lacks: a focus on creative, exciting world building. And this is something that the prequels excel at, more so than even the classics. They are filled with imagination.

I loved the prequels and never understood people that were up in arms about how bad they were. It's entertainment, isn't it? Something you use to escape your daily routine. When the end credits roll, the illusion is over.

... kinda? 'Too gritty' is oversimplifying it. There's tons of other problems with these movies. Bizarrely inappropriate slapstick that neuters the villains and tanks the tone and tons of time wasted on nothing - crap that barely advances the plot and doesn't color the characters as anything but stooges. I'm kinda brought back to the RLM test on describing characters. I think we can do a little better a job in the sequel movies maybe but whether or not the characters we describe are a fit for the film is another question entirely.

I haven't seen Rogue One or Solo. I can only speak on the numbered movies but for them at least too gritty isn't the problem.

Sure there are tons of problems, but as a 8 year old kid you usually don't care. I call them gritty in the sense that they aren't movies that would be attractive to 6-12 year old boys, which should be the main audience if you are trying to sell toys/merch.

TLJ didn't have fantastic worlds, it had a ship, a casino, and NZ. It didn't have fantastical characters or aliens. It had a bunch of annyoing WOMANZ, a bunch of loser dudes who can't do anything right, Luke who is the old guy who yells at you to get of his lawn. Even its color palat was muted and dark.

What is attractive to an 8 year old boy in TLJ? Shirtless Kylo being all emotional and a giant loser? Rey being a mary sue? Luke being an old dick? Poe being a failure? Finn being a complete lost case who wants to die?

Compare that to something like GOG. You have Racoon and Groot. You have funny comedy and a cool guy like StarLord. You have funky (but old ) music. Colorful planets and ships. Even Yando with his hair and arrow is really cool. Drax is the strong but silent type. Gamora is a bad ass hotty. I would eat that shit up as an 8 year old. I would want a Groot toy, StarLords helmet. I would want their ship. I would quote Chris Pratt constantly and probably say I am Groot 10 million times.

After TFA the series including the side movies decided that manbabies and WOMANZ was the primary audience and young boys aren't needed. But thats the audience that will buy toys and merch and will re watch your movie over and over and eventually become those manbabies 30 years later that will suck off your franchise.

I could see Disney doing this, but it's more likely they just ran Star Wars into the ground with incompetence. Lucas isn't coming back or getting the franchise back.

Star Wars sucks now, but there's plenty other things to enjoy instead. I don't have to watch Disney movies.

Rey being a Mary Sue could actually be compelling to kids if she had done epic cool stuff. As it is, she's barely even in the movie's climax, and mostly felt like a secondary "I'm going to be important in the future" character, outside of her role in the Throne room.

possibly, but I am being in the mind of an 8 year old boy. Most of em wouldn't really want a Rey action figure. Its not that boys can't identify with female heros, but in general boys will identify more with male characters then female ones.

A female lead can work, can be in movies that make money (see captain marvel) but I don't know how popular its going to be selling to an 8 year old boy. When I was younger it was GI JOE (male) transformers (male) TMNT (male) Ghostbusters (male). No boys I knew were running out to buy Josie and the Pussycat or Jen and the Hologram action figures.

I just don't really see anything in her character that would make an 8 year old boy be like whoa I want to be her or she is the coolest.

Because I can look at reviews, average scores, and have taste in movies and make a common sense summation of movie quality I’ve ruined Star Wars? Lol.

I think you need to take a hard look in the mirror when you label someone else a super fan that’s ruining the series. TLJ is miles away from my favorite movie but pretty much any mediocre movie is better than the prequels. Ofcourse you didn’t tell people that the prequels were superior it’s almost impossible to prove besides your own steadfast and sensitive opinion. No review aggregate will show them as more popular. No quality metric. No writting metric or the fact that they’ve been made fun of by memes since the movies came out. It’s an extremely hard case to make.

The prequels are something the Disney Sequels will never be: they are Star Wars.

And they had a lot of flaws, but they are fun for the most part and good at world building with lots of iconic and charismatic characters. TLJ is filled with boring plots, uninteresting characters and cheap fanservice. Watto alone is more interesting than any character in TLJ .

i mean, you started off ok, then the last sentence you just fucking couldn't help yourself but point the finger based on the reaction to the movie. lol

I stated earlier in the post that most who dislike the movie AREN'T assholes about it. In fact, part of what's horrible about the people who act this way is that people who dislike TLJ but also act like decent human beings have to have this childish behavior associated with them by those who only hear the more vocal jackasses, kinda like how the Rick and Morty fanbase didn't exactly look great after certain fans threw public temper tantrums at McDonald's over a stupid sauce. Because even if the toxic people are the minority they tend to be the most vocal and the fanbase's image unfairly suffers as a result.

I'm just basing my last statement on my own personal experience. For every person I've seen who is toxic in liking TLJ, I see like five people be toxic in disliking TLJ and they usually get much more personal about it. I even feel kinda uneasy wearing my TLJ shirt in public, while one would think toxic people are less brave about being this way face-to-face, I once actually had to deal with a waiter start going on about how he hates Spider-Gwen (because she was on my shirt) and I'm just awkwardly sitting there silently because I'm scared if I even voice my own opinion he'll spit in my food or something. So yeah, one can't even wear a damn shirt anymore without having to deal with this shit. My most hated movie is Silent Hill Revelations but if I saw someone wearing a shirt of it I wouldn't feel the need to start arguing or anything.

I just don't understand why some people can never stop talking about things they don't like instead of moving on to stuff that makes them happier. Like on AnimeNewsNetwork, on ANY Gundam topic this one poster would always throw in a comment talking about how he hated Gundam Seed even if the topic had nothing to do with Seed in particular, and finally a mod had to put an end to it because he just wouldn't move on already. I just can't fathom why someone would constantly want to think about something that makes them sad or angry, it's baffling.

I'm pretty sure Rian got to make his own vision and it's not corporate meddling. That's why everyone hates him.
