After a lot of rumors, and high hopes, it looks like the Obi-Wan Kenobi Star Wars project is taking a big step forward. Come in for our report!

Today’s report won’t likely come as a surprise to many people, but it is nice to hear. Rumors of an Obi-Wan Kenobi related project have been circulating since Disney bought Lucasfilm back in 2013. While it seemed to have started life as a standalone film, recent reports are that we’ll see Obi-Wan come back as a Disney+ series…Which is what I’ve heard as well.

So what’s new? According to two separate sources, I’ve heard that Ewan McGregor has actually put pen to paper and inked a contract to return as the iconic Jedi Master. I heard word of this recently, but I was sitting on it until, out of the blue, a second source reached out to me (I hadn’t gone digging on this one) saying the exact same thing.

Again, this shouldn’t come as a surprise considering how open McGregor has been in his desire to return to the Star Wars franchise. What’s interesting to me, however, is the timing. While development on the Obi-Wan project has been in the early stages since the beginning of this year (according to other reports), locking in a contract means they’re really moving forward on it.

D23 is just a week away, with Disney already promising a more in depth look at their future live-action slate and more Disney+ information. It may not be outside the realm of possibility they were eager to get the contract signed now in order to make some sort of announcement for the show (much like how Marvel signed up Simu Liu for Shang Chi just before SDCC).

I hope it won't be just a Disney+ series. It should be a movie. I think it could be a big success.

It's going to be an Obi-Wan series on Disney+, mark my words. Time to hype up that machine. They're saving the shitty live-action remakes of shit we don't want to see for theatrical releases.

He was the best part of the prequels but I have zero faith in anything Disney might make with Star Wars.

It's probably going to be another lame movie where instead of just telling a good and/or fun story they'll try to force some explanation for everything iconic about the character and make forced connections with the rest of the movies

This is like the only idea that made sense to me, it's a shame they've only thought to turn to it as a way to course correct after obliterating good will with many fans.

This is an idea that any Star Wars fan - hell, any writer with any level of awareness of what was good and loved about the old stuff would have pitched as a great idea for one of the Star Wars revival projects - the actor is not too old to return to the role, and he's a highly respected and beloved character that was one of the best things about the prequel trilogy.

Actually, in all fairness the Obi Vs. Anakin final showdown was a pretty fucking amazing scene.

We don't have to expect, worry about, or even consider him saving the current series cause he died like 30 years before that shit show started. During the dark (good) times. Before the Knights of Whatever, and before the force was made into diarrhea.

Yeah, but I wouldn't put it past Disney just implementing full-blown time travel into Star Wars and bringing him back that way.
That's how garbage they are.

This would not surprise me at all and almost seems logical at this point. They have no clear vision for the lore and future of SW it seems, so hey why not play around some more in the time periods people still vaguely remember enjoying?

Found elsewhere, regarding the recent video going around about how Disney is potentially trying to get rid of older elements in an effort to avoid paying Lucas:

One thing they don't say in the video, but seems obvious to me, is that they're definitely doing time travel now. If not in the next Star Wars film, then the one after it, or in some side-film or something. If they can reset the universe at some point in time, they can make a whole divergent universe, just like JJ did with Star Trek, that enables them to make films set in the original trilogy, or the prequels, or extending from it, and allows them tell fans that this is all still the original thing you love, while making it different enough that they can tell Lucas that it isn't, and that they therefore don't owe him any more money

I want a film just like you guys but it makes no financial sense for Disney.

- Spinoffs dont make the same money as mainline. Huge box office dropoff from Force Awakens to Rogue One. Then shot way back up again for Last Jedi.
- Movie business is increasingly dependent on China. They simply do not give a shit about Star Wars.
- TV Subscription services, while an oversaturated market, still provide a much bigger profit margin and less risk than film. That is exactly why there are so many in the first place. Monthly subs are way better for profit than hoping everyone sees the big new shiny feature in June or December.
- Rian Johnson movie trilogy is still happening. Yet another movie spinoff could lead to worse SW fatigue than what we already have.

He might have done something during the 20 years. Maybe he didn't stay on Tatoonie the entire time.

Those spin-offs didn't have well known actors that have been in Star Wars movies before. Obi-Wan movie might be different.

I'm not sure if anyone within Disney believes that. The Benioff and Weiss trilogy is scheduled to run through 2026. So does Rian's Trilogy being in 2028, nine years from now? Or will Star Wars need another three-year hiatus first? Even Disney can't predict what demand there'll be for a 5th trilogy almost a decade or more from now.

It's a real relief to know I'll be 50 before I have to worry about another Rian Johnson Star Wars film. Maybe I can go senile by then.

so they have The Mandalorian, which is about a Boba Fett guy, and takes place in Mos Eisley and the surrounding Tatooine desert, and this will probably take place in the same locations. they can just re-use the same sets. two shows for the price of one.

so if Jon Favreau directing this too, like every other movie and show in the world rn?

Chasing an old character isn't what the Star Wars team should be doing. There's probably a few people in this camp, a few that want Ewan McGregor back in Star Wars, but his character is dead.

Could this finally be true, after the Movie Trilogy rumours in 2016.
And last years hint that it would become a show.

Mind you he was meant to announce it after Solo came out but that didn’t make enough at the box office.

Also Jason of Making Star Wars is now reporting it & if any source I’d trust is him, though he does occasionally get wrong info, but he gets more right too.

They are making 2 movie trilogies with all brand new characters though. Also
Possibly the knights of old republic show or movies that they hinted at earlier this year unless that is one of the new trilogies the D.B. & Weiss thing.

Ewan’s Obi Wan is Alive, it’s Alec Guinness Obi Wan that’s dead!
So why not visit a old favourite for a Disney plus show? Keep new characters in the cinema & have older faves like the bounty hunters, stormtroopers & mandalorians post rotj in the Mandalorian Series, Cassian & k2 in their show & now probably Obi Wan on Disney+ (Starring Darth Maul most likely)

It gets way easier now for fans.

If your not into the classic characters or just looking for something new, just don’t subscribe to Disney plus (or don’t watch SW on there anyway if you do sub & keep going to the cinema for New Star Wars. (D.B. & Weiss & Ryan Johnson trilogies)

and vice versa

if you don’t want new stuff, new characters & wanna stick with the older stuff then avoid Star Wars in the cinema then subscribe to Disney plus.

Until Disney messes it up of course.

Huh, so they are thinking TV show for this and not a movie? Either way I don't give a fuck anymore, not going to watch their theatre offerings, and sub services for entertainment are off the table for me. I am legitimately interested in seeing Disney destroy this thing in new and creative ways though.
