Anyone seen any good movies lately?

The Conversation starring Gene Hackman. It was a Francis Ford Coppola movie filmed between Godfather 1 and 2. I felt a little cheated by the end of the movie, but after letting it settle for about a week, I've determined that I like the movie quite a bit.

Brightburn- Pretty slow. Some good acting by the mother and father. Pretty surprised at the amount of gore and just the sheer "no fu**s given" attitude of the boy. I was shocked to learn the budget was only like 10 million or less. They did some great stuff with that relatively tiny budget.

Serenity (2019)- OMG. This movie better become some sort of cult classic. I knew nothing about the film going in and boy was that the right choice. The movie starts off pretty normal but feels 'off'. Not going to spoil anything but it goes in a direction I was not expecting. And I loved it! Not a great movie, but still a great movie, if you know what I mean.

Too Old To Die Young- This is an 8 episode/ 12 hour long story directed by Nicolas Winding Refn. Its billed as a series on Amazon Prime but watches like a miniseries or extremely long film. Insane production quality. Classic Refn style neon and dark synth music. Disturbing plot lines, exploring the darkness of 'good' people. One of the best "shows" I have ever seen. Highly recommended if you are a NWR fan.

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs
The first two stories were the most enjoyable, it’s a shame it wasn’t a full movie based on Buster Scruggs as the title implies.

Dragged Across Concrete... loved it. Bleak as fuck. Yes it could have used a little trimming, but still great.

Vince Vaughn / Mel Gibson combo was excellent. Some genuine chemistry there I thought.

Hobbs & Shaw at 4DX cinema. Chairs vibrate, massage guns beat you silly during fight sequences, mist and water splashes during final showdown. Looked like a jungle towards the end. Seats tilted left / right / etc for arial shots and strobe lights flash periodically during gun scenes.

Amazing experience and the movie perfectly fits, although it advertises scent and I didn't smell anything.

Oh yeah,

Holy crap Ghostbusters 2016 came on TV just now while I was making dinner and I tried to watch it...

I mean so much was bad it's hard to describe. There was no pacing, the jokes were so dead pan, the writing was pitiful, the acting was soo bad. I think the worst part was the direction. There was no build up or tension. Shit just happened in rapid fire session. I could not finish it...

Dinner was good though.

Saw the Rifftrax live for Giant Spider Invasion on Thursday. All new riffs, a neat and bizarre short beforehand, and the complete movie (including a bunch of scenes cut from the original MST3K episode). Damn fine experience.

Last ones I saw were highschool high, mandy, once upon a time in Hollywood, and I'm in the middle of driver now.

I liked them all, driver is good so far.

Sigh, watched Avengers: Endgame last night and aside from the humor bits I thought it was far weaker than Age of Ultron. No wonder they released a new theatrical version with extra scenes because the plot holes are so bad, I mean holy shit.

Easily the worst Avengers movie for me by far. Even for a comic book movie, the plot execution is so insanely bad.............

Having small kids and not being able to get out to the theater as much as I like, I saw Detective Pikachu last night. I thought it was pretty good! Tonight will probably be Stan and Ollie since I’m going through my backlog.

You kinda missed how the entire point was they were taking things like the Infinity Stones out of that timeline but then later would return them back to the point they grabbed them which is why Cap has all the Infinity Stones and Mjolnir as he heads into the past again at the end of the movie.

Its one of the laziest concepts in movie making. It was cringe that ran for three hours. They even made fun of the concept in the movie. It essentially made the movie that came before it useless in every way. Also Captain Marvel was awful in it.

"im gonna go kill Thanos"

I saw it, it is a hilarious trainwreck. I hope not too many people get spoiled on where the movie goes because I remember everyone in the theater just looking around in confusion at the madness that was ensuing. But beyond that, it's still hilarious. Matthew McConaughey and Jason Clarke (and whoever plays that businessman who is always trying to meet McConaughey) go so over the top, it's hilarious.

As for me, saw the Dora the Explorer movie, it was pretty entertaining and funny. It's downright weird that a show for little kids went this route (like CollegeHumor did a video of this crazy idea a few years back) but it managed to be a fun ride.

Tell Loki, Heimdall, Gamora and Vision that......

Also, seriously, Thor also claimed he was going to kill Thanos in IW and failed at that time. The Carol hate is getting ridiculous.

But seriously, you and SadRanger sound like CinemaSins getting caught up in every little plot hole you can find (and CS points out he only does it for comedy, not as a legit way to look at film). I just find that a very depressing way to look at film, and really you can destroy virtually every classic as well with such a mindset.

"Um, excuse me, but so the whole point of Citizen Kane is to find out the meaning of his dying word, 'Rosebud'? But one can clearly see that as he dies whispering the word no one could have heard it as the nurse opens the door to the room after. Thus the entire plot of the movie makes no sense and thus it sucks!!!"

I mean if there was a reason Cap Marvel knew where that ship was, fine. But the entire point was they had a few hours of O2 left before death. The movie sets up these tense moments only to ruin them with some asinine deus ex machina. But Im not a huge fan of superhero movies so I just tend to find glaring inconsistency and it takes me out of the movie.

I mean as an end to 10 years of work it felt lazy and thoughtless. it was watchable and no doubt had some great moments but I was kinda let down. Whatever, maybe it wasn't made to tailor to me. :messenger_tongue:

Now excuse me while I re-watch Serenity... :messenger_beaming:

Because that wouldn't quite be the same Natasha just as it's not quite the same Gamora. Also, that would just mean another timeline's Avengers now have to grieve their Natasha being taken from them. Also, what, does Natasha apparently not give a shit about her timeline's friends and wouldn't raise a thus that our Avengers "got her" (seriously, she's a person, not some item). And I know people will go, "well, what about Peggy", but Steve obviously went to the alternate timeline right about when WWII ended so it's not like he stole Peggy from the guy who she married in the main timeline since they wouldn't have met yet.

The Gamora we know throughout the movies is dead (she has to be, otherwise a paradox would occur since that means Thanos never got all the Infinity Stones thus they would mess up the timeline leading to disaster), the 2014 Gamora is an alternate timeline person and should be treated as such. Which is why I'm hoping Adam Warlock in GOTG 3 resurrects the OG Gamora as having her die completely separated from every single person she cared about was fucking lame since all the other characters who died at least got to be near at least one person they cared about.

I assumed Carol took the ship to a planet with oxygen but must not have had intelligent life thus no fuel so she had to bring the ship back herself. It's one of those details that I'd rather the movie just let me figure out the details rather than having to waste a minute showing it happen. Pacing is a crucial element to storytelling and time would just come to a halt if they had felt the need to show us unimportant stuff like that.

Captain Marvel - I was highly skeptical but loved it, except some of the dumb humour and feminisms and the lead actress. It's easily one of the best Marvel movies.

Avengers: Endgame - a waste of time lol. The Asgard scenes were good though. Can't believe these dudes made The Winter Soldier. Also can't believe my favourite Avengers movie ended up being Age of Ultron...

Godzilla: KOTM - well they fucked this one up. The humans in this were actively annoying, while the dude in the first movie was basically inoffensive. The first Rodan scene is good - though poorly set up - and everything else is rubbish. The first movie (and Rogue One) had an impeccable visual style, extraordinary sense of scale and masterful pacing. This one went full retard. The monster fights are fucking shit. They're dark and filled with visual noise, the blocking is bad, the cuts are bad, the choreography is bad - did they even storyboard this shit? Also what's with the spaceship lol? And how the fuck do monsters hear that stupid sounds from continents away? Most Japanese movies were also retarded but I think this particular plot device is even dumber than usual.
Anyway Warner probably deeply regrets shooting Kong Vs Godzilla before this one launched. They've got a new BvS -> Justice League situation. KOTM is fucking garbage.

Aquaman - I wish I watched this in IMAX, or at least on 3D. I avoided it because I hate James Wan and the recent DC movies sucked. Well, that was a mistake. This movie is awesome. It's what Jupiter Ascending and Valerian tried to be. I still like Gods of Egypt more though.

Once Upon A Time In Hollywood

The movie was good to the point after it finished I still needed more. So I went back home and watched The Hateful Eight followed by Inglorious Basterds. The movie did well in showing the old Manson family and all that. I’ll watch it again in the cinema because literally all the actors in the movie did an amazing job!

The Bush Baby

An old movie of 1969,based on the novel. Canadian anime dub is also available on YouTube, 40 episodes in total.
Rare and relatively unknown movie, released only on VHS in 1993. Taking place in Kenya but filmed in Tanzania. It is about the adventures of a British girl, Jackie Rhodes, who finds a bush baby and has to return to England after the independence. But because she does not want to leave the animal behind, she escapes from the port and with her Kenyan friend Tenbo try to find help, while being hunted by black and white authorities on suspicions of Tenbo kidnapping her.
More political than the novel, it even mentions the Mau Mau uprisings. You even have a Muslim being leader of an ebony poaching ring and an Indian police officer telling him that he prays on a false god. Even the Masai are presented badly, giving them away to the police and Kenyan police officers aren't any better. Only Jackie's father is the voice of reason
This time Jackie's mother is supposed to have died in the uprisings as civilian casualty.
You hear brits comments "we built this country from nothing and they kick us out", "law and order needs to happen for once in this country", "you will be hanged" (to Tenbo)
Would be too pc incorrect today for a kids adventure movie. Deserves a bd release though. Magnificent scenery and animal videos. Bush Baby animal steals the spotlight, though it does not appear as much. But the scene with the mantis is included. Wished they had included the leopard and the book conclusion with the rain, but it would be too difficult, at a time when there were no animal cgi

I watched Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead. I hadn't seen them in a long time. The Criterion Collection Blu-Ray of NotLD looked really good. The best the movie has ever looked.

shutup shutup You should probably put those into a spoiler that says NSFW. I don't know how you guys can like those hack n slash types of movies they always seen very cheaply made and boring to me. But everyone has different likes I guess.

X-Men save the MCU plz.

:)
They say it in the film, someone can travel back/forward in time and spend X amount of time there, then return/travel to the exact same moment in time. For all we know, Thanos in 2014 spent 2-5 years reverse engineering the pym particles and made enough to teleport his ship. And then returned to the future/present in 2023.

At the end they needed the van because they were no longer wearing their Pym suites.
RE vehicles being able to time travel people without suites ..... eh ...... it was shown in Ant-Man and the Wasp, you just have to roll with it.

Or how Thor just takes Mjolnir out of that timeline leaving past Thor without a weapon? The entire movie was a f**king mess. TIME TRAVEL GUIZZZ!!!!!!!

Cap returned Mjolnir to the past along with the stones. Put your phone down and pay attention.
:)

*EDIT*
"Black Widow is gone, she's not coming back......"

WELL WHY NOT GO AND GET HER FROM BEFORE HAWKEYE GOT THE SOULSTONE SINCE THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT THEY DID WITH GAMORA AND THAT APPARENTLY DOESNT FUCKING MATTER.

Every time they travel back in time to a different point a new splinter reality is created. The 2023 Nataha that we know is dead, you can't bring her back.
If they return to when Natasha was going to kill herself it would be another separate reality, another reality that contains a 2014 and 2023 Natasha living in the same space. If you remove Natasha from that reality than that realities 2023 will forever stay with Thanos having won and half the universe snapped away

Gamora from 2023 wasn't brought back to life, Gamora 2014 was brought back to the future because she had no choice but to follow her father. The reality she is from will no longer have a Thanos trying to collect Infinity Stones and therefore that Gamora no longer has a direct impact on her reality. In fact, even if her reality still contained a Thanos, she just saved it by not being there as she is the only one that Thanos has any love for, hence he can not acquire the Soul Stone in their reality.
And for all we know, the next GOTG movie might be getting her back to her own reality.

Yes thats the one, I have seen the Host and Memories of murder, Okja not yet, is on my watch list :)

Btw one of my favorite Korean movies is The Chaser (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1190539/?ref_=nv_sr_1?ref_=nv_sr_1)

Cool, I'll add it to my list. I run an Asian film blog so I'm always looking for new movies to watch.

Okja is okay but it's a lot more western than his other films. Financed by Netflix and all that. I still recommend it though.

Do you watch Korean movies a lot? Kim Ki-duk is another director I'd like to recommend if you're into that kind of thing.
