Just to correct you on a tangential but none-the-less important point, none of those works of literature or movies (bar perhaps THX 1138, I haven't seen it) was a warning about "socialism".

Especially 1984. Orwell also wrote Animal Farm and Road to Wigan Pier. He was a committed "democratic socialist", but wary of the dangers of too much power anywhere. To present 1984 as a warning on "socialism" is akin to something the Ministry of Truth would attempt.

One of Orwell's peers - Aldous Huxley - wrote to congratulate him on 1984. Huxley was a noted author also - he wrote "Brave New World", which I think you meant rather than "Strange New World" which was a Gene Roddenberry tv movie / pilot starring John Saxon, the cool golf playing, stiff kicking motherfucker out of Enter the Dragon (everyone in that movie was a cool motherfucker).

I know a number of people who've worked in games for a good long while.

At no point, ever as far as I can tell, has it been the case that a producer would okay "gay" or "faggot" being slipped into the game as a developer in-joke. As part of the in-universe world or character building, sure, thought they'd be very wary. There's no doubt things are tougher now and mob wrath is more easily triggered, but removing these things isn't an example of it imho.

What I don't like is the way this has been driven by a kind of curated outrage, enabled in places by a tabloid style gaming press, with the staff of Voidpoint being almost semi-publicly paraded infront of the gaming world as being - collectively - judged needing of "re-education". That whole sequence doesn't make me feel comfortable, if I'm honest.

The paedophile thing is a funny one, as we literally had someone do what they did to Ion Fury, hang around their discord and take screencaps. And yup, some of their "prominent members" are paedophiles, but of course, they did their best to cover it up, admins gave them new usernames and claimed they were no longer on the site, and all the "erafied" journalists mysteriously didn't bother covering it. There is a separate thread for discussing this now on here, but it's just worth reminding folks this happened given the similarities with how they uncovered that Ion Fury are literal nazis and deserve life long punishment for making a sprite 20x30 pixel sprite which says 'ogay'.

At some point, the industry must be civil. That behavior is why those folks exist in the first place. The smart thing for any company to do is simply remove it, apologize, having a meeting about it and move on. Want to make it continue? By all means "just ignore" and keep allowing that behavior and you'd simply increase the complaints.
