30 Nights of film: Tackle that Backlog

7. John Wick: Chapter 2

How did I know this was gonna be another movie about Keanu sulking, getting hunted down by a bunch of bland villains, all whilst he has his god mode and infinite ammo cheats on? These movies are such nothing. Some of the most bland and generic action movies I've ever seen. None of this is interesting or entertaining. Also fuck Ruby Rose with her shitty haircut dragging this movie down even more. Nobody likes you now fuck off. The CGI blood is back and as shitty as ever. Really takes me back to the PS3 era. Great job hollywood. The subtitles on the screen were also fucking annoying. Looked like the goddamn PS3/Spiderman movie font and takes you out of the movie seeing that garbage. Fuck modern hollywood garbage. I definitely won't be watching 3. 4.5/10

Fucking lucky. I've been trying to find that boxset because it looks so cool. The movie is apparently some shitty detective movie so I never bothered. One day I'll find a copy on ebay for less than 30 bucks. One day...
What kind of music did you guys play?
Nah, I know VHS is cool for nostalgia purposes but I didn't get it. It was expensive and I'm not that keen on VHS stuff that can be purchased on DVD. That goes for a lot of money. We played noisy Hardcore/Punk nonsense.

Oh it was VHS only? I know the BDDFH one was DVD so I figured 555 was too. MV pisses me off with their VHS only stuff. Stop being hipsters. Also now I found out too late to buy a normal DVD copy of 555 :messenger_pouting:

This is exactly what I expected.

9. Hitman: Agent 47 (2015)

I wasn't going in with high expectations, but this actually wasn't too bad tbh. Rupert Friend riding high of his role in Homeland fills the boots of Agent 47 in what is ostensively a fairly stylish looking mid-tier thriller which goes balletic combat that could best de described as John Wick lite. No ones winning any academy awards on the acting front but it was entertaining enough for the most part. 6/10

10. Ingrid goes West (2017)

I like Aubrey Plaza, but I really struggled with this one. AP plays a socially awkward individual who becomes utterly fixated with Instagram and ends up moving to LA so she can stalk this influencer that she discovers (Elizabeth Olsen). Ostensively it's supposed to be a black comedy, but ultimately it's just hard to watch. It's not a bad film, but not for me . Cringe/10

Damn, Dwayne lookin S W O L E in this. Pretty cool how Kurt Angle was one of the inmates. Lots of hot women in this too. Wouldn't make a movie like this these days. Movie was a lot darker than I expected but still pretty funny and entertaining. 7.5/10

Not sure how they spent 80 mil on this CGI shitfest. Like seriously some scenes look SO fake. Don't understand why Jason Statham was a main character. Who even is he? Not enough Bruce Willis. Not enough AHNOLD. I wish Stone Cold stunnered somebody. Pretty generic action movie but enjoyable enough if you like the guys in it. Not bad just alright. 6.5/10

11. Game Night

A pretty decent comedy about a hyper-competitive couple Max (Jason Bateman) & Annie (Rachel McAdams)who host a weekly game night at their house for their friends but mischief ensues when Max's older brother Brooks (Kyle Chandler) turns up out of the blue. Quality comedic work by Meth Damon (Jesse Plemons) as their awkward neighbour also. 7.5/10

8. The Curse of La Llorona
5e51.gif

I was intrigued at how this movie would turn out in adapting it for an American audience due to the folk tale's origins. Cutie Linda Cardellini doesn't get much to do other than look scared and scream. She plays a single mother that is a DCFS worker that goes to check up on a client since her kids have not shown up to school. She is keeping them safe from La Llorona and since Linda is all 'what is luh yo-row-nuh?' and thinks that the mom is abusing her kids, she causes the sinister señorita to seek her and her family out and ay dios mio, chaos reigns. The movie has a feel of a movie that hasn't been fully completed. Long silent stretches, poor camera work and some of the acting is bad. The former priest who helps them out can't decide on one language when trying to fight La Llorona by chanting in English, Latin and Spanish. The movie just ends and even the Annabelle connection is easily missed if you're not paying attention. This movie is like ending up with a crappy Taco Bell value meal when you really wanted Steak Fajitas.

9. Cutie Honey
source.gif

Hideaki Anno made a decent flick! It's lighter in tone than the anime and manga sources, but you get:
a cute girl doing cute things and fighting evil with pizazz, transformation scenes, tokusatsu action, some lackluster CG, unexpected musical numbers, and Eriko Sato doing a great job as Honey Kisaragi. Even if you hated Shin Godzilla and Evangelion... this film is nothing like that at all. It'd make a great double feature with Speed Racer. Honey... Flash!

10. Manson
2d5b25e4123df167deb39890ca8ca7eb.gif

A trashy exploitation flick disguised as a documentary. There's footage of Charlie, Squeaky Fromme and Sandra Good going off and delivering their sometimes hilarious nonsense speeches. Reenactment footage of the family and real rants from Charlie's Angels from the Spahn Ranch saying weird rhetoric and sayings that the family had. They weild guns as if they're a doomsday cult ready for war. Weird, erratic editing and bad acid trip visuals accompany some truly grating hippie music at times, but you also get some tunes from Charlie. There's some great non-sequitors in the film, such as wanting to skin Frank Sinatra alive. Fun fact, one of the directors of this film died right after making it.

12. Nocturnal Animals

Bit of a weird one this. Amy Adams plays a wealthy gallery owner whose current marriage is on the rocks, who receives a manuscript from her previous husband (Jake Gyllenhaal) which tells the tale of a family road trip gone hideously wrong. Great performances by both actors (and some seamless de-aging tech for the flashbacks) and beautifully shot, but kind of inconclusive as to what it all means. 8/10

A lot better than the first one. It was nice seeing Arnie and B-Willy for more than 2 mins and actually do stuff. CGI was also better than the first. Still pretty average but seeing all these guys in a movie together makes it worth watching if you're into that. 7/10

Little LTTP but watched 4 movies in the last few days that I remember:

1.A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001)
Pinocchio meets Blade runner in a Spielberg movie. Very enjoyable despite it's 2h30 length. 8/10

2.Joe (2013)
It's dark, bleak and made me feel sad. In a good way i guess? 7/10

3.Brightburn (2019) - 08th august 2019
Movie would be better if presented as a Vilain introduction movie than an horror one. Ending of the movie / during the credit makes me want to see a brightburn 2... 6.5/10

4.My Hero Academia: Two Heroes (2018) - 08th august 2019
Recently got into that anime. to be watched after season 3 episode 20 i think. Extremely enjoyable but requires prior knowledge. 9/10

5.Mystic River (2003) - 09th august 2019
I feel like I can't really talk about the movie without spoiling it. There's one too many "coincidences" that just puts it beyond belief. all in all wouldn't tell not to watch it but not recommending it. 6/10

6. Batman vs Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2019) - 10th august 2019
Really fun crossover where the TMNTs follow shredder to gotham. hilarity ensues. Fun action included. 9/10

*scores are based on enjoyment and feeling towards the movie, not necessarily a quality based score.
7. Aladdin (2019) - 15th august 2019
I tought it would have been worse. that said , I have not watched the original one in decades. 7/10

8.Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) - 16th August 2019
Big ass lizard beats Big ass 3 headed dragon in big ass cgi fight. its amazing. 10/10, my godzilla biased is showing.

9.American Anarchist (2016) - 17th august 2019
So the anarchist cookbook is not an actual COOK book. Still interesting documentary on the guy and influence of his book that he wrote in his teenage angst era. thank god what i tought as a 19 years old isnt out there. 7/10

edit:

10. King Georges (2015) - 17th August 2019
It should technicaly be 9 but whatever. It is a documentary on Georges Perrier Is the chef of "Le Bec Fin", a refined French restaurant in Philadelphia. Through the movie you see him being a shit. he reminds me of my father a lot. 9/10

11. Boarder [Gräns] (2018) - 18 August 2019
Swedish Beast girl is a boarder guard, she can sniff your bullshit. movie was really good. hope no-one has to live with that face IRL. 8.5/10

12. Parasite [Gisaengchung](2019) 18 August 2019
Class struggle movie where you follow 2 family of different standing and how one tries to make a buck. Don't want to say too much about it other than its a must watch. 10/10.

No blood or gore like the last 2. Everything looked like it was shot in front of a fucking greenscreen. The CGI was worse than the first one it's seriously so bad. Ronda Rousey scenes are just so crinfe. Looked like she just smelled a fart 24/7. Nobody asked for this. Nobody asked for a PG-13 action comedy. Honestly nobody asked for the young guys either. Should've been a send off type of movie not 'let's get young people nobody cares about or knows to be our proteges'. I hope I look like Dolph Lundgren when I get older. He's such a chiseled chad and dat hair. Dat jaw. 5/10

A bunch of dumb skits for 1hr 23mins. This hasn't aged well at all. I can't imagine anybody under the age of like 35 finding any of this funny. I thought these were all supposed to be short skits but the kung-fu one was like 30 mins. Shit was painful to get through. Boomers have the worst taste in comedy. 3/10

15. Professor Marston and the Wonder Woman

Basically tells the colourful tale of the man who came up with Wonder Woman. Essentially a disgraced University Psychology professor who lived a polyamorous life and who developed a keen interest in bondage. Kind of fascinating, in large part because essentially those early Wonderwoman comic's were filled to the brim with lots of SM material in terms of tone (people getting tied up and punished a lot...) Luke Evans, Rebecca Hall and Bella Heathcote make up the principal players. 7.5/10

So there's this bitch ass kid (played by bootleg Macaulay Culkin) and for some reason he's allowed to come out with cops and help. He also has a little police scanner in his room and investigates shit by himself. He's obsessed with anything police related. This motherfucker is taking evidence and everything. Another kids movie where all the adults have brain damage and all the kids are smart. Spoiler alert: The kid saves the day! I expected this to be cheesy and dumb but it was just dull. Kinda had a Home Alone thing goin on at the end. Best thing in it were the end credits which looked like they were from a sitcom complete with cheesy rock music. All the women in it are hot though. 4/10

Pretty decent Futurist Thriller about a troubleshooter Kate Mara (sporting a tidy haircut) is sent to a remote research facility to determine the fate of a Human AI project that may have gone off the rails (Anna Taylor-Joy). Not a bad film at all. Clearly shot on a budget, but with that said it has a fairly excellent cast. Well worth a watch 7.5/10

No, I saw the thumbnail months ago on some streaming service and just thought it looked dull, but I might check it out if I can find it somewhere now that I'm seeking out some westerns.

It's a long film, well worth a watch but don't expect a bloody shootout or spaghetti western malaise in it. It's worth the watch when you have time to pay attention to it and there's some truly gnarly as fuck scenes in it.

11. Under The Silver Lake
giphy.gif

I didn't care for 'It Follows' at all, it was a subpar "is horror/is not horror" film that doesn't add or detract from the genre. This movie is a hilarious take on conspiracy theorists, the Illuminati, Hollywood and hidden messages in music. It's almost a great mix of David Lynch and Wes Anderson. There's some great gags such as Andrew Garfield reading a Spider-Man comic and Topher Grace acting like a hipster douche playing a Nintendo while referencing Nintendo Power and waxing intellectual. A lot of paranoia about hidden codes in our everyday lives and a cute Riki Lindhome wearing some sexy, spiffy outfits.

12. Zombie 90: Extreme Pestilence
tumblr_o308fostzD1r73lylo1_400.gif

A hilariously horrible dub of a shot on video gore flick. A dweeb with a stereotypically nerdy voice teams up with a Doctor with a faux Black voice talking shit and fucking zombies up. It veers on absurd towards the end, this budget horror flick soars beyond the norm due to its hilarious improv dub. From the same director of 'Violent Shit' and just as entertaining.

13. Lockout
tumblr_p8vngiN1eD1qdhps7o3_r1_500.gif

A dumb, yet fun Escape From New York in Space flick with help from Luc Besson. It's a violent sci-fi flick dealing with a cool, cold criminal forced to do some dirt deal saving someone (in space) in order to survive. Besson was sued by John Carpenter, stating that this film aped from his Plissken films. A decent time waster with a great cast featuring Guy Pierce, Maggie Grace and Peter Stormare. It has a great song by The Raveonettes when the credits roll. A budget bin flick that's great and delivers just what you'd expect... a real good time.

17.Everly

Grindhouse style thiller with Salma Hayek wherein she's fallen foul of a Yakuza boss whose got it in for her for betraying him, so mayhem and a lot of violence and sadism ensues. I can't fault the action or Salmas commitment to the part, but when something is so clearly this OTT it's hard to buy into it in many ways if it's not your scene. I dare say others will enjoy it more though. 5/10

Some dude in an ugly as FUCK clown mask goes around killing people. There's seriously 3 sections in here where the group just plays their songs in full to pad out the length of the movie. I feel like the white rapper character was put in here so the writer could be all 'LOOK AT ME I KNOW HORROR TRIVIA LOLOLOL'. After the movie ends they spoil who the killer is and talk about a potential part 2 that never got made. Not bad enough to be entertaining and too many scenes drag on for being such a short movie. I miss the early 2000s. 3.5/10

I've been slacking off, if you can say that about not watching movies, but here we go

13. Westside vs the World (2019) 19th august 2019
A documentary on Louie Simmons, the culture he had around his gym Westside Barbell, and powerlifting. very interesting and entertaining. 8/10

14. The Mlk System (2017) 23rd August 2019
had milk this morning, also extra gassy today, might be related - i dont know. felt right to watch a documendairy (this pun felt great to make.)
Would not recommend it. it is well shot, really nice to look at. but it is very dry. the state of the european dairy industry looks sad. pretty sure i saw a similar documentary on the US one that was more interesting IMO. 4/10

EDIT:
15. Ninja Scroll (1993) 23rd August 2019
Not the best choice of movie to watch at work, so much more nudity than i thought there would be.
otherwise really fun ninja/samurai/Japanese swordsmen anime movie to watch and quite impressive fight scenes. The fight scenes are all nicely choreographed and varied. Must watch IMO. 9/10

16. Rocketman (2019) 23rd august 2019

beautiful and stylish murder mystery movie that takes place in a "haute couture" place where the killer takes out models one at a time. - 6/10 - wish i didn't get distracted so much during it , would've enjoyed it more maybe.

Well done ppl. Due to unforeseen circumstances, I found myself away from home for a longer than expected, so GJ on carrying on with the thread. I did manage to pack in a couple of films though I had seen the first two before (I was reliant on what was on offer): -

18. Casino Royale

Have to say this still holds up surprisingly well, and it's funny going back to it just to realise that there's this whole section where Bonds roaming all over the place getting up to mischief and that it actually takes quite a while before Bond gets to the Casino part of the film (and the delightful Eva Green), and that in itself is only really a middle act before the conclusion in Italy/Venice. 8/10

19. Quantum of Solace

I can't fault the film for the action, or the stylings, but the actual plot itself is an incoherent mess and Mathieu Amalric just doesn't sell it as the films big bad with his permanent flop-sweat look coupled with his diminutive stature. 6/10

20. Snowpiercer

I'd been meaning to watch this for quite a while, so it was good to finally get the time. Given the scenario, it's hard to take the film seriously but at the same time some great performances and a visual treat in terms of some of the imagery (the room full of dudes with Axes and balaclavas is hard to forget) . 7/10

21. Gods of Egypt

I wouldn't say this is a bad film in terms of premise and execution, but the miscasting of actors is kind of shocking, to say the least, not because of the colour of their skin (a popular complaint at the time), but just in terms of the roles they are playing. Much time for NCW, but I think he was a little too old to play Horus, and Gerald Bulter going with his own accent was frankly bizarre. 5/10

22. Shazam!

A bit of a weird one really given although it's DC it's largely played for laughs (very much in the way of 'Big' which it directly references at one point) but Zachary Levi is pretty entertaining as the lead. 7.5/10
