Joker ReviewS: Masterpiece Level

So was very surprised to see a bunch of outlets scoring this so high. Ign gave it a 10 and others are calling it the best DC movie ever on par with the dark knight.

Wasn't expecting to see reviews so early since it opens in Oct.

Currently sitting at a 74. 1 Negative review pulling it down and a few Neutral reviews including RogerEbert.Com

can a mod fix the random capital letter in the title. Autocorrect screwed with me.

Joaquin Phoenix finally going to get the Oscar he never wanted but always deserved, but mostly came here because Joker threads on GAF are legendary!

I was cautious of getting excited because of the state of DC movies but once I heard he was going to be the Joker I knew it was going to be amazing. Can't wait to see it.

I saw all positive reviews, went to metacritic, wondered why it only had a 74, and saw the bottom a 20 from Time, immediately suspected there was some type of sociopolitical agenda behind it, read the review and DING DING DING!!

That might be one of my top 5 pet peeves. When someone gets angry at a movie or video game because it either doesn't preach politics or does and doesn't preach the ones they want. You should be stripped of media credentials for not doing your job.

I am quite excited for this one. A while ago, I would expected the leto Joker to be the next movie. I'm glad this is not that. Phoenix has a chance to be immortalized here

yes its a growing trend recently with film reviews over the past few years, they didnt even review the product but reviewed based on their own ideologies. I agree they are not doing their job.

Ahhhhhh yes, I still see these "critics" have not passed the class on "don't fucking describe the movie's plot in your review dumbass" Seriously, I had to stop reading because he was giving more of the plot away than a Hollywood trailer!

I'm surprised that there isn't more hype on GAF. This looks to be the comic book movie of the year but people seem a little indifferent because it's not connected to some kind of cinematic universe? Would there be more hype if Batman was in this?

Joker is my favourite comic book character and I much prefer the character to Batman so this film is perfect for me.

I knew that this existed, but paid no attention to it. After all, the state of DC has been pretty... yeah, Wonder Woman aside. Add in Disney’s entire forgettable, designed-by-committee superhero slate (excepting Winter Soldier, Infinity War, and Doctor Strange which are pretty awesome) and I was pretty much burnt out on this genre.

Checked out the final trailer on a lark, and wow. It’s been forever since I was that impressed by a trailer and concept. I’m not a big fan of the review outlets, but I can totally see this scoring that high.

I guess that makes me an edgelord now, but I accept my fate. 😋

Cool, trailers looked meh to me, but if these reviews are anything, I can't wait. Hope this doesn't make me problematic lol

This is great news. Hopefully we get three hits with:

IT: Chapter Two (September
Joker (October)
Doctor Sleep(November)

I didn't know much about Doctor Sleep but it sounds awesome! I had no idea that King wrote a sequel to The Shining.

Also just noticed that all three of those films are WB pictures.

Grace Randolph pointed out that the four negative reviews so far are from Top Critics, most notably TIME magazine, so not just small sites looking for “against the grain clickbait attention.”

Regardless, I’m expecting to be impressed.

I look forward to all the joker Halloween costumes and references to it in pop culture,TV shows and films.

Meaning it’s a great film 😀😀

At this point you could cast Joaqim as the role of a turd and critics would still praise him/the movie. When will we fucking move on from this metacritic/RT critics bullshit? They're never ever what the general audience prefers.

I was expecting a good movie but not with those mad reviews. Now I’m just waiting for it to drop in theatres!!

The question I’d like an answer to is will they explore the joker’s ties to the mafia before his transformation.

His origin in the comics is strange because it’s never told the same way every time it’s told, unlike Batman’s origin. Which makes me wonder if the Nolan brothers looked at Joker’s origin in the comic and went WTF? And just decided to roll with the ever-changing story for The Dark Knight.

It seems to me that there are two consistent elements to his origin story: 1) His ties with organized crime. 2) There’s an incident that puts him over the edge, usually something that damages his face.

If they don’t at least explore those two facets, then I can’t honestly say this will be a good adaptation of Joker from the comics. Regardless of acting performances.

Because at the end of the day, this is what most of the fans want to see in a comic book adaptation: an interpretation that tries to be faithful to its source material.

Joker is a special character we got, why hasn't this film been made sooner? Straight up bomb shell dropping.

Is Batman in this film? Surely the Joker doesn't exist without Batman? Joker was in all of Batman's films, so it'd be kind of him to let Batman in this one.

Sounds and looks really good. A legit movie and not a tv show sold as a movie? Hell yes. Feel like we have been wallowing in tv level crap for too long. This actually looks cinematic.

Batman has been done to death, this is the first comic movie in a one time that seems to do something different.

I never see comic book movies (too many of them and I'm not that interested) but the cinematography in the trailers looked outstanding and Phoenix is a great actor. I think I'll actually go see this in theatres, shouldn't be too hard to find some people to roll with.

That's what I'm worried about. That it's a character study about a mentally I'll man and it doesn't actually touch on any of Jokers actual origins. Basically the films name could literally be anything, but they called it Joker for brand recognition.

Even if it's a great film, I'll still be conflicted if this happens.

I am not sure about Doctor Sleep, but IT2 and Joker seem interesting enough for me to leave the bunker for a few hours.
If you are unsure of what Dr. Sleep is, its the sequel to the Shining. As long as it follows book, it basically fleshes out what the shine is within the context of a redemption / fight a more concrete (but still supernatural) bad guy type of story. Book is recommended if you like SK or horror in general.
