Nah i think it's much better if you ignore someone because some people just want attention regardless of if it's likes or dislikes.

My samurai code doesn't allow me to use the ignore function. It feels week and cowardly. I prefer to express my discontent in the most impotent of ways, through a thumbs down reaction pic.

But who cares about your thumbs down button? That's what you do to feel good, but ultimately it doesn't get anything done. And since you don't address them anyway, it's just passive aggressive.
Where as if you ignore someone, they're vanquished. You actually get something done.

it cleaned up the politics board quite nicely. The three people I put on ignore aren't even necessarily people I disagree with but they tend to take over threads, intentionally or not, and end up detracting from the flow of conversation or push repeatedly the same topic into threads that initially have nothing to do with their agenda.

I don't mind seeing ignored user reactions. Let's me know there is no reason to take them off ignore anytime soon. I'm a much more pleasant person when I use the ignore feature. If anyone has noticed that I'm not as vocal lately well now you know why. Turning into more of a lurker until all the 2020 game news becomes more frequent. Little Nightmares 2, Animal Crossing, Ori, Tunic, The Last Night (maybe), BotW 2, Halo, Fable 4, Metroid Prime 4 (maybe), I'm legit excited. Sorry got off topic there. Focus!

True, but people like their e-points. Having the "like" option is already a lazy way to conduct discussion. Adding negative votes to the mix would probably just lead to more harm than good.
I don't have anybody on ignore, so I'm inherently looking at this from a different perspective than the OP. My question is what's stopping a person from just scrolling past the stuff they don't like? Do we really need that much of a safe space?

The reactions are there for quick-fire input. They're largely intentionally positive (with some opportunities for humour). I agree that it's great if people add something to a thread, especially in terms of support, but let's be honest, the world gets busier and busier and sometimes you just don't have the ability to do more than browse or lurk. Being able to add a like or a thoughtful (my favourite reaction to give by far) is if nothing more just acknowledging that appreciate what someone has said.

Exactly! If everyone with an unpopular opinion had their posts slammed with overwhelming disapproval, that would suck. Reactions should be a GOOD thing to get, not a spiteful thing to give.

I understand some posters can be a tad abrasive, and while I've never used the ignore function myself, I certainly don't discredit anyone else for using it.That having been said if you're using it basically to create a safe bubble or space where nothing can possibly offend you, you're doing yourself a disservice...
Debate is how we grow and how genuine progress is made, ignoring anything that made us uncomfortable would mean the majority would still be in the dark ages before science lol
Oh and if you've reached a level in this area where emojis "trigger" you (God how I hate that phrase) then like the poster above me stated, you may want to take a break from the Internet for a while lol

lol I wouldn't say the ignore feature is "pretty much pointless" because of this, but sure, it does still allow you to be triggered by seeing a minimal footprint of people you would like unpersoned. If they can add that functionality for ingore happy users, ok, but if not, I think you'll survive seeing a few hearts and LOLs from people you dislike.

I've seen it happen. a negative positive reaction function was added to a forum and it changed the tone of discussion overnight. Members started safeposting or crowd pleasing posting to avoid any negative reactions. The negative reaction was used to bully certain members. People would actually go back through thier old posts and negative them and in some cases use alt accounts to double the damage.
As my mum used to say "If you've got nothing nice to say, best say nothing at all.
Positive reactions only on GAF please.

Not to worry. I customized our reaction system deliberately to avoid those pitfalls and reinforce positivity and constructive discourse. We won’t ditch that approach.

If someone is that butt-blasted by what someone else says on the internet that they need the person’s entire presence expunged from their feed, perhaps former someone needs to take some time away.
Additionally, if someone is causing that much discontent, (I.e. multiple users have beef with one user), a community vote for ban consideration (with receipts of course) might be in order.
No matter how butt-blasted I may become, I won’t ignore someone.
Seems counterproductive to the entire point of a forum anyway. We’re supposed to be having discussions, if we all ignore each other, we’re already creating our micro echo chambers.
Besides, you should assume the user you’re posting to May know something you don’t.
Or you can just ignore me and my post.
