Crowbcat - Gears 5 lacks weight and intensity

So it's woke, they've sacrificed the detail for fps, there's a pointless open hub world, pointless upgrading, the story wont end because it's another middle trilogy game, etc. I went all in on GOW remake (full digital version), and GOW4 ultimate edition on disc....and im not even considering buying this thing. It's another 343 Halo, basically someone elses version of gears, or basically it's fanfiction.

tldr, gears literally ended at part 3, they killed them all, this lot is all "what if?" fanfic, for corporate money.

Been a fan of the series since it's launch, I think Gears 5 is the best Gears game since Gears of War 2.

I played Gears 4 for the first time this year and something did feel off with it. I obviously didn't have the first 3 games as a reference and hadn't played them for many years. Did crowbcat do a comparison with Gears 4 as well? Is it just a bad as Gears 5?

I'll still get Gears 5 on PC at some point, once Gears 4 is available on Steam. But seeing videos like this is a real downer. I'm sick of seeing newer games with less detail and shittier AI. I can't believe that FEAR still has some of the best AI in the business and it's 14 years old!

He sure is good at pointing out the negatives, that said, my pet peeve is weapons feeling like bb guns in games. Give me some recoil animations, some environmental reactions, chunky sounds, etc. Gears 5 should be nailing these things (going by video it is no better than 10 year old game but I have not played it myself).

Also, I have a weird nostalgia for Gears 2.

I love how every CrowbCat thread brings out people complaining that his videos are edited or nit picking... yes... he's picking out specific things that are worse in the 2019 game compared to a game from either 2006 or 2008 depending on the footage. And yes, they're edited, what does that complaint even mean? Should his videos have contained the entirety of both games? They're edited to show you the comparisons he's making. There's nothing actually dishonest about what he's showing, but there's something very dishonest about how some people react to it.

Yea, I love his videos. They always give me a good chuckle, and he’s not afraid to shed light on various gaming related topics.

So why did Digital Foundry make two 25 minute videos flossing how technologically advanced this game is, yet no mention of how backwards it went in regards to everything we've seen in crowbcat's video? Are they only about visuals? Or are they really that biased? I'm really asking here as I don't find their videos that genuine sometimes.

Most of the stuff in this video is at the very minute levels of detail. 99 percent won't see it or care.

The main thrust is about how these allegedly minute details add to the feel of the game and the feel has less weight and is less intense as a result. It's possible the average person won't be able to put their finger on why it feels off, it's possible the average person hasn't even played the first two games for comparison and it's possible the average person has no nuanced viewpoint on pretty much anything. A lot of us who like games intense and weighty will be disappointed but it's good to know people who consider McDonald's gourmet cuisine will be happy.

His shtick of highly edited and cherrypicked videos of how the old game is so great and the new game is so bad is really getting dull. Very low effort video.
I still remember his Dead Rising 1x4 video which mostly consisted of the him grabbing useless objects and praising DR1 because you need to escort NPCs while omitting the fact the AI in that game is abysmal.

No it isn't. You're talking about Digital Foundry here, who are the LORDS of nitpicking on the minutest of the minute irrelevant stuff most don't pay attention to. Yet in their technological video, two of them, none of this is mentioned?

Except when he omits information and takes things out of context.

They generally just do deep dives about the tech at hand, they don't do comparison videos with older games in a franchise.
If a game is ported to new hardware, that is where they would compare.

What is taken out of context or omitted in this video?

I wouldn't take that guy seriously, he legit defended Dead Rising 4 of all games two posts earlier.

I don't know, I didn't play Gears 5. I'm talking about his other videos (see my previous post about Dead Rising)

I haven't seen that one or I've forgotten it if I have. If both videos are showing the same items being used in DR1/DR4 though I don't think it's out of context.
I'll check the video out tonight.

It's a great vid emphasizing the lack of interactivity in DR 4 compared to the original entry, it shows off how many of the elements that made the original a cult classic are missing. There's a reason no one talks about how "good" Dead Rising 4 is and why it has a mixed reception on Steam.

Ultimately they aim for different things. While the details are very nice in Gears 2, I had completely forgotten they existed until this video (as I am sure most have). I love Gears 2 (it is my personal favorite of the franchise!), however I remember mostly the characters, the moments (Dom/Maria), and the multiplayer. Not the tiny little details that are ultimately glossed over and forgotten as you play and beat the game.

The Coalition prioritized FPS over these little additions and I can't say I blame them (especially for the reason I stated above).

I really like what I see, and I have the game. It's just that I wish they were completely honest about everything. Don't praise one part to high heavens then completely gloss over other not-so-impressive parts to prove a point. People look to them for complete impartial tech analysis.

The game is good so far to me, there are bugs though. Got stuck in the ground after a cutscene twice in a row and died, the third time though I didn't get stuck lol.

Good points by crowbcat. Similar to his Crackdown 3 vid.

But most people won't notice or care.

People will notice raw visuals, res and frame rate more than physics effects on shattered windows and blood stains.

This video has crushed my enthusiasm. But this is not unique in this gen. Far cry games have also gone backwards. There’s just not enough cpu for abundant world simulation and physics while pushing eye candy.

Next gen the devs will have ample processing power to have their cake and eat it too. This gen needed to end last year, and I pray it doesn’t act like an anchor for most next gen games.

Pc gamers are getting screwed mostly with software designed to run on calculator cpu’s.

Devs get a spec boost every gen.

- Textures get better. Yes
- Resolution gets better. Yes
- All kinds of better lighting and effects. Yes
- Cut scene quality gets better. Yes
- Sports and shooters get more modes to play. Yes

- Physics get better. No
- AI gets better. No

I just bought 2, 3 and Judgment. Finished 1 and 4 on PC years ago. 4 lacked weight compared to 1. I wonder if it was a gradual change over the years.

Gears 2 made character movement kinda more limber but most of the more agile movement happened in Gears 3 mostly. People kept bitching about how slow character movement felt in Gears 1 and 2 so Epic made character movement much more limber. I remember the devs talking about it when Gears 3 was at E3. That's also when they put in the quick dodge animations.

The animations to get into cover, roadie run and out of roadie run are much shorter in gears 3 than gears 1 and 2. As well as the turning animations while standing.

People used to bitch that character movement felt "too tanky" in early Gears and that's why they changed it. That's a big part of the reason why people say it "lacks weight". So I don't blame em cause it's a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" thing. 🤷‍♀️ 🤷‍♀️ 🤷‍♀️

The sound design changes on weapons is boggling but that's not a Gears 5 exclusive thing, the lancer and other weapons sounded muffled in Gears 3 as well.

All the guns in Gears 2 sounded LOUD. I prefer the way Gears 2 weapons sounded as well but like I said earlier that started in Gears 3.

I will never understand how dev teams (especially the guys doing the audio) can be part of making macho shooting games and guns can sound muted, lacking ooomph.

This goes for all shooters.

Maybe for some ultra realistic military shooter where the niche audience are all hardcore army vets, they need to make every gun sound authentic (even in silencer mode), but for something like Gears, it should be loud blasting effects with big muzzle flashes.

It's like making a sports game and when someone gets a TD or HR, there's hardly any crowd noise.

This current gen went leaps and bounds with the GPU, but barely went anywhere with the CPU. Next gen is promising to be a more rounded box.

I dunno, maybe it's because of game design and balance reasons. I do remember dying a bunch on Gears 2 on the hardest difficulty simply because enemies would close in on me from behind and I couldn't hear their footsteps or audio tells because the guns were so damn loud.

Don't get me wrong I really like the weapon sounds in Gears 2 but I can understand why it's a tough decision on a game where your being constantly swarmed by tons of enemies.

Or maybe it's an audio mixing issue that's only in 2ch audio systems. IDK.

Great video by Crowbcat......I hope people are not offended that he gave a breakdown on tech. No talking needed, games are visual. These are the differences. It is what it is.....

Why does a 360 game look better than a game that came out this year?
Shhhhhh!....... The latter is arguably the best looking game of all time.....

Seriously, I always tell folk, it's the sum of all the parts that matter. They should be at a high quality level for people to really take notice and to keep pumping those accolades.......Graphics, Physics, sound, control, fluidity, immersion....

I think Epic are really missing Cliffy B. The guy knew a lot about games. Infact he has the most knowledge about games than anyone else, ever.
