Epson has introduced their LS500 Laser Projection TV at CEDIA 2019. The TV is a combination of an advanced ultra-short throw laser projector with an ultra-high definition ambient light rejecting screen with unique optical layering technology, resulting in bright, colorful, and sharp picture in virtually any viewing environment. The TV offers stunning 4K HDR projection, and will be available in the first quarter of 2020 in both 100″ (MSRP $4,999) and 120″ 100″ (MSRP $5,999) iterations.

Pretty sweet.

Wow, I'd like to see that in person. In the past I never understood why someone would favor a projector over a television. But that looks really good.

Projectors are at a really weird point right now with HDR finally starting to take off and get serious. They can’t compete in the living room with a 4000nit display, Hell they can’t even compete with a 800nit one, and oled and led’s are getting bigger and bigger every year for less money. Years ago I spent 17k on a 75” flagship screen. Last year I spent 10k on a 85”. Next year I might be buying a 88” for 10k or under. Projector manufacturers have to go in this direction fast if they want any piece of the pie to remain in 2025 beyond the ultra hardcore niche, which could never support the cost of major development and consumer production cycles.

I’d love a pop down 120” screen in my living room with a short throw built into a cabinet, but unless they can handle daylight hour viewing at highcontrast, and nighttime viewing with full hdr reproduction, i just can’t see it happening.

Is there any 4K projector now for a reasonable price that can do HDR properly?

A few years ago I spent money on Sony VPL-VW295ES - big mistake.

Once we start getting 100 - 110 inch TVs for a reasonable price, projectors will soon become obsolete.

I hope I live long enough to see all TVs become a screen that is projected at any size into the air with an image quality indistinguishable from reality.
