The Jimquisition - It's Microsoft's Fault That Videogames Are Bad

It behooves first party publishers to provide top quality productions that make their consoles worth buying. Nintendo and Sony have both produced amazing games to sell us on the PS4 and Switch. Microsoft, however, is different. Microsoft has decided to act no better than a grasping third party "AAA" publisher. Even worse, it set the tone of a generation and contributed - perhaps more than any other company - to the nasty normalization of excessive monetization. It's Microsoft's fault that videogames are bad.

This fucking talentless fat knobhead getting another thread yet again about a fake opinion. Great.

I miss the days when he was more fun at escapist and making stupid fun videos like defending Waterworld. Dude has been doing a bit now for years.

But unfortunately outrage culture is where the views and money are at on YT regardless of the take of whatever side your on.

I don't know if Microsoft ruined video gaming, but its approach to buying and fostering studios has been pretty lousy. Gears, Forza and (now that it's had time to grow) Sea of Thieves are fine, but first-party Xbox One exclusives are practically defined by mediocrity. I'm hoping that Halo Infinite and the wave of new studios might turn things around.

I've been saying this for years, but I get labeled as a Sony fanboy or whatever when I bring it up. Gonna actually give this one a watch.

Before watching, I hope he hits on:

  • Paying for Online
  • Horse armor/DLC originator
  • RRoD
  • Excessive bought timed exclusive BS
  • Dropping off of making quality exclusives midway through X360 generation
  • Ruining 1st party/purchased studios
  • Sitting on many great IPs but only making sequels to 3-4 franchises

don mattriks microsoft probably it was a business, siphon all the cash you can. but its so hard to point fingers when business evolve over time with different company outlooks.

I agree with the bottom point they have so many god damn ips under their belt just sitting on the floor inside of a closet somewhere.
honestly thought they would try to complete with mlb the show. considering microsoft owns high heat baseball.

MS had so many great games on PC, it's strange why they never had the same success on console.

I'm talking Microsoft Flight Simulator, Age of Empires, MechWarrior, Crimson Skies, MidTown Madness, Zoo Tycoon, Links Golf.

They have the money to make exclusive games on consoles but they refuse to do it.

WOW, certainly not necessary, it's his opinion....I'm sure he argued his case unlike you.....We should stop attacking people and instead attack and counter attack arguments.....
How does he think Sony ended up with those First Party studios?

They purchased them.
No, they built studios and grew them, they allowed devs to be creative, not use a stick as a headmaster in a London orphanage of yonder....
To MS's credit, at least they haven't shut down Rare after their miss steps (Looking at you, Sony and Evolution Studios).
Perhaps you should do some research on the number of Studios MS has shuttered....How about number of games cancelled, this gen alone, when they needed games more than any other Console manufacturer......

Also, there's a level of hypocrisy with lots of persons on this.....They always talk about EVO, and it grates me that EVO is gone, but business is business and EVO has not been having a good launch with good sales for more than a minute...They were given many chances.....The hypocrisy I see is how many people are asking or asked for PD to shut down earlier this gen, yet GTS is so innovative and a success, it's the best driving game online with a huge following and high production external events.......Sony does not shutter Devs who deliver, they allow their devs to take their time and change their formula, they don't rut them out by slaving them away on the same cookie cutter racer year after year, perhaps with some loot crates or another gimmick to suction the money out of their fanbase....

OT, I will watch the video soonish…..

You're the last person on this forum who should be giving posting advice.

??? So you're saying he actually doesn't believe this? Why?

Not even worth having the debate because the premise is just dumb. More interesting question is what do the advocates of this view want people to do exactly?

Let’s just assume we entertain the fantasy that MS is the only adult in the industry and that all of the other participants are children who cannot be held responsible for adopting MS’s supposedly “evil” practices, what should we (as consumers) do now?

If I stop paying for XBL will Sony suddenly stop charging for PSN? I mean since Sony did not make an independent choice to charge for PSN (as they were apparently led by MS or forced by gun point), why should I expect Sony to make an independent choice if I stop paying for XBL now?

Logic seems to unravel quickly. Is the argument really that all gaming companies are lazy and/or greedy but do not act upon it until shown how by MS? Really? So but for MS these same companies would never act in their own interests? Would never seek to increase profit margins?

This is what you all actually believe? Good grief. It’s like talking to 1st graders.

Clearly someone hasn't done their research on which of the franchises you're implying has microtransactions, and which doesn't ;)

Bullshit.

Sony were reeling from the Ps3 fiasco and had to double-down on a powerful console and make compelling first-party exclusives, as they didn't have the resources to risk outsourcing to 3rd parties.

Microsoft went the always online route, had an appalling launch with an under-powered product compared to their competitor. They had to rely on 3rd parties to whisk them through the rest of the gen. Microsoft have had to keep their head down and plan for next-gen. How could they release a 1st party title and put it up against the PS4's own exclusives, when the former was getting blown out of the water graphics wise, by the latter.

By the time Microsoft had a new strategy in place with the X, their first party studios were either busy or in disarray. 343 took the lead from Bungie and likewise the Coalition from Epic.

This gen has been mostly terrible for games because of safe, yet graphically impressive, first-party exclusives from Sony and MTX/Lootbox fest, cookie-cutter outings from the usual cavalcade of 3rd party hash.

You're talking shit, Jim.

Xbox live definitley pionnered some of the services and features we see become more mainstream today, but I wouldn't say Microsoft is the sole villain out of the business exec sheniaghans we see today so don't know why it's wholly focused on them other than just wanting a few clicks because of his usual style videos. Dissapointing to see that poor bias because of this.

It's always humorous when someone puts together a 20+ minute long video essay that's well-argued and well-constructed with multiple examples, and then people in comments sections, on forums, and elsewhere are like "watch me hip check this fucker with my one-line rebuttal/zinger!"

Lol, yeah, and fucking annoying because i read them.

Anyway, ms is steering this industry into an area that will suck. Fewer people willing to pay upfront for games, and the need for companies to heavily monetise means worse, more manipulative games.

I mean he is right. While Sony and Nintendo actually produce great exclusives, Microsoft meanders in mediocrity with their exclusive ips as well as aquiring double A studios to shit out mediocore double A games for their Game Pass.

Dont want to play a list wars, but theres plenty of amazing MS games. Lets not put everything into the same bag.
