List bitching is so stupid. Nobody has the authoritative voice when writing a list of what they think are the best games ever made. Just sit down, shut up, and enjoy reminiscing about a bunch of classic games, whether or not you agree. 😋

As for this thread, and I really don’t mean to be so negative, what are random lists of games from people supposed to mean to me? I presume The Guardian at least included reasoning for the picks. I’d like to see why people regard these games so highly, or what their experiences were.
I actually feel the same way when it comes to top "best of" or "worst of" lists. Not sure why some people continue to get upset over the stuff other sites publish, as if they aren't allowed to share their own thoughts, same with YouTube comments replying to YouTube personalities saying stuff like, "I can't believe you left out this game". Really? You can't believe that after they narrowed down their interpretation of the best games that they would leave out one or more that you would have included? Come on now.

For example, I really like Deus Ex and Skies of Arcadia, but if someone prefers Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory and Final Fantasy VII, that's perfectly fine. The OP really likes Gravity Rush and its sequel but there are others who might not. It really goes both ways.

Yeah, all anyone can do is share their personal life experience.

I think people take a list, from a large publication or figure, that doesn’t feature their favorite, as some kind of attack from a place of authority. That’s the only reason I can figure that would draw out such passion.

In actuality, it’s just a regular person relating all the fun experiences they’ve had with gaming, and giving their opinion. It should be more of a cause for celebration and response lists made in positivity, than anything.

It’s literally fun and games, after all.

I didn't feel that the Guardian's list was bad, but I don't trust them so I'll have Zelda, Gears, Metal Gear Solid, Rare games etc. in my list, SONY exclusives certainly qualify. Top 50 feels like a lot, Bioware games hold up well. End rant.

Its a great Metroid-vania; i love the dynamic of Aeron & Elena 's relationship, i love the game...it really resonates with me, and the true ending is beautiful IMHO. Oh and no the list isn't in order; but Pandora's Tower is my Number 1 :)

Smash Bros Melee as the only thing resembling a fighting game shows that their list is a joke and an insult to fighting game players. I trust the lists on this thread much more

I was expecting a thread worth a shit, rather than everyone rushing to post their own meaningless list, with nobody actually reading any.

What’s more exciting? Fifty random names cited? Or (in a probably smaller list, or just for the top 10) posts saying what those games meant to the poster, and why they’re so great, on an individual basis?
Are you this mad Prime 4 is coming out in 2030?

I'm actually one of the very few and perhaps only gamer who's been gaming since 1989 with NES that does NOT have an all-time list because I just don't see how I could put today's games against for example, NES. I have a generation by generation list but all time, just can't do it because as each generation arrives, the technology and everything gets better while every past generation just comes across to me as simply obsolete.

I disagree that older games are made obsolete by newer ones. The ones I listed are memorable for me because I still remember the emotional impact they had and I would play them again in the present. Even for games that are all about gameplay and that have direct sequels like dynasty warriors.

That's why my list is just what I scored them when they came out. For me, it means they're relevant for when I played them. The bigger problem is that I am very biased towards the older games. This year, I have only completed 4 games.

I don't mean obsolete in the regards that you mention. I mean obsolete in terms of tech and capabilities. Every generation advances so it's literally impossible for an NES game to hold up against the games of today. It's why I don't compare games outside of their generations as it's simply not fair as the older games are limited by their respective generation's tech and capabilities.

That's why my list is just what I scored them when they came out. For me, it means they're relevant for when I played them. The bigger problem is that I am very biased towards the older games. This year, I have only completed 4 games.

Outside of Final Fight CD, im not biased at all towards the older games or the newer games simply because I look at say, Chrono Trigger. Classic RPG for SNES. An all-time classic. But it was the RPG that got me into RPG's so it has an advantage. However, if I put it up against say The Witcher III, Chrono Trigger is inferior in every way simply because the tech of The Witcher III allows so much more and eliminates stuff that I can't go back to such as no voice acting for example. Then I think, what if Chrono Trigger was a 3D third person turn based RPG today? I could just look at Dragon Quest XI for perhaps the answer but perhaps not. Who knows? I could also think what if The Witcher III was an overhead 2D hack and slash RPG similar to Link to the Past. How would it translate to that era with that tech and capabilities compared to what it actually is?

Simply, just way too many variables and what if's for me personally to compare games outside of their respective generation.

And damn, only 4 games completed? Which games? For me, I have completed 12 games thus far with 5 backlogged games from July/August and have 3 games this month plus GreedFall (that im currently playing) and between October and November, another 6 games.

I'm accepting a challenge another poster put forward to put more thought behind the list. This is going to be slightly tough for me because I don't have a perfect order in mind and don't really want to change it midway, so I'm just going to do my best and I'm going to have entries represent whole franchises so I'm not typing this thing out for ages...

Dark Souls/Bloodborne/Sekiro - You might notice I omitted Demon's Souls, it's because I've never gotten very far in it and only recently began really trying to via emulation. I currently do not own a PS3 and PSNOW doesn't seem to have it =/, I have no doubt it's worthy I just try to only include games I've put significant time into. This is an interesting number 1 for me for the simple reason that I hadn't really played a significant amount of any of these games prior to the year 2018. Before 2018 I once played a rental of Demon's Souls for a short bit. I also played a rental of Dark Souls only enough to beat the first boss and then returned it. Bloodborne I bought at one point due to reviews but couldn't get anywhere in it and traded it in. In 2018 Curse of Osiris had left me bored and I needed something to play, Bloodborne was back on my PS4 due to PS+ and I decided to try it again. Something clicked with me that hadn't prior. It still took me ages to pass the angry mob section but for some reason dying over and over didn't make me stop, I kept getting closer to victory and the taste of that victory kept me trying. Then there was the big dude slamming the door after the mob, couldn't beat him now... man the game was just giving me road block after road block. Figured out the parry timing and destroyed him, it gave me so much confidence I went back to the fatty in the alley behind the mob and took him down, too. Then came those werewolves... more dying... finally I reached the big boss and after dying once I came back and owned his ass. Beating the first boss on the second try just felt amazing to me. From that point forward the game made perfect sense to me, there were still parts that frustrated me like Father Gascoigne making me realize I wasn't parrying as well as I thought I was and bosses like Martyr Logarius and Orphan of Kos I believe I've always needed at least 1 person helping for but I felt like I had been baptized through fire and was now a true part of the fandom. The game had more than just amazing combat, though, the story was cryptic and interesting, the world design reminded me of the Metroid franchise and the atmosphere was simply top notch. Boss designs were aces and the DLC was among the best I've ever played.

After beating Bloodborne 7 times, yes 7 times (no Platinum because I got sick of the Chalice Dungeons) I went on to Dark Souls lll which I had gotten through the Humble Monthly Bundle for PC. As I'm playing a friend messages me to ask why I'm playing DS lll without playing the first game first and I tell him it's because I had heard lll was the closest to the sort of game Bloodborne was. He gets angry telling me how much interesting shit I won't get because I haven't played the first. I ignore him and keep playing. This game is HARD even though I'm coming off Bloodborne. The switch to having to figure out what weapons/armor work for me was an extra burden and though it did play close to Bloodborne it wasn't close enough to make it easy for me. It was slower and more deliberate. I had amazing amounts of trouble in many sections and then I finally reached the Abyss Watchers and realized I was far too unskilled to defeat them. I couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong and sought out all the advice from the internet and friends that I could. None of it paid off until finally someone who understood I went from Bloodborne to Dark Souls lll realized what I was doing... I was fat rolling. I didn't know what a fat roll even was and he explained it to me plainly enough. I realized 75% of why the game had been so difficult was my lack of understanding that I had significantly reduced my i-frames the second I found heavy armor. I felt so silly but it's not like the game made this stuff clear as day. With this new information stored in my brain I went back after those dirty Abyss Watchers and taught them I meant business. I reached Irithyll of the Boreal Valley and am so amazed by the view I take a screenshot and share it. Same friend from earlier begins yelling at me that the area would matter more to me if I played the first first. I continue to try and ignore him and hit my next big difficulty spike, I can barely get anywhere in Irithyll without doing. Finally I decide to listen to my friend and go back to the first game...

I can't get mods to work, can't get a controller to work and finally give up on playing the first. I say, hey, I'll do the second which I ALSO got from Humble Monthly Bundle and that'll be good enough. My early experiences with Dark Souls ll: Scholar of the First Sin include me going to Heidi's Tower of Flame instead of Forest of Fallen Giants. It took me a long time to figure out I was doing the wrong order because the enemies felt killable they just required a lot of hits and a lot of patience. Finally I complain to someone about how hard it is right off the bat and they tell me about the route to Forest of Fallen Giants I hadn't even noticed. This area has me dying plenty but I always feel like I can do it if I try again, I feel far less defeated and persevere. Getting to The Last Giant is anti-climactic when he dies my first go and is easier than the entire level leading up to him but I'm too happy I won to care. Next I find the Pursuer and out of sheer luck I parry him first try and ballista him to death right off the bat without having to do it again. I put a feather in my cap and think "easiest boss ever, lol". Go on to the bird's nest and get brought to The Lost Bastille with no clue I'm skipping content. I still remember the first time the Pursuer reappeared behind me as I looted a chest and made me his bitch. I tried valiantly over and over to beat him and get that chest but I failed over and over, whatever worked for me before it no longer did. I resolved myself to move on and to my surprise he shows up some more, and I'm like "oh... right... the PURSUER." Eventually I get to Ruin Sentinel and with summon help they fall the first time, I once more have no clue that it's not usually this easy. I eventually from here make it to The Lost Sinner and hit a true to life road block, I can't beat this jerk! Someone tells me to summon the NPCs, that the shield one really helps. I try that but I find they tend to die on the way there to those exploding zombie things so I've gotta be extra careful about keeping them alive and sometimes they even fall right off that bridge into the water... sigh. Finally I get to try him with the shield guy aggroing him. He kills the shield guy and my other buddy while still above half health and then me. Finally I realize "hey, I'm heading back to Heidi's Tower of Flame" and though the beefy enemies still give me trouble I find I can truly do it now! I make it to the first boss and I don't even know the making him fall trick, I instead have raised the platforms so we can't fall because I don't want to fall. No matter, he's pure cake. After him I arrow that dragon to death and fight a dude I don't realize is a Dark Souls reference and put him in the ground like the bitch he is. I'm realizing this was the way to go after Pursuer, bird trip or no. Next is No Man's Wharf and this is one of the areas I died and went back to more than any, but in a way that it never left me frustrated because I always made progress. I began exhausting enemies, a trick I hadn't seen in lll or Bloodborne and thought it was awesome I could do that. After a helluva a level the boss goes down like the bitch he is because I had already fought him like 7 times on the way to The Lost Sinner and I laugh, too, because for this to be a boss here and a mini-boss there means I REALLY messed up the order. Back to Lost Bastille and finally I conquer the Lost Sinner thinking he wasn't quite as hard as he seemed. From this point forward the game had some definite spikes in difficulty but I understood it, I loved it and it temporarily became my favorite game of all time. I beat it twice on PC then played it on XBOX One as well, because why not? Finally I decided to return to part lll and beat the ever loving crap out of that game. It was lesser than 2 for me, mostly due to the linearity and brevity. 2 Was huge, epic and had so many damn bosses and areas to explore. It also had the most chilling moment in a videogame for me when you finally find Vendrick. I loved lll but ll couldn't be topped for me....

I figured out modding the first game's Prepare to Die edition and my controller stuff and went to work on the first game. Making it the last one I played meant getting aggravated by things that the other games don't have. For instance, when you roll into an enemy you come to a dead stop. Or the Capra Demon fight being in the most narrow arena I'd ever seen with a damn tree in it on top of that and two dogs! WTF! What really got me though was the Depths. They were confusing as Hell and I kept dying of curse or poison. I couldn't figure out how to get back out of them to buy something to cure my curse either, the design was far too confusing and samey for me. When I finally got past them to Blighttown things got worse, not better. Holy crap the number of times I died from falling on the FIRST FOUR enemies of Blighttown on that bridge. I finally reach the awful swamp at the bottom and am perplexed by the design decision that I move slow and get poisoned and have rocks thrown at me and have bugs draining my blood, why does this game hate me so much? I reach Queelag and try to solo her like I did other bosses, after all no one else is around to summon in this older game. She kills me over and over, I am terrible at predicting her fart explosion. I am besides myself not knowing what to do. Finally I find a summon for another player, we go in and the other player uses some spell on Queelag and she just straight up DIES. I don't feel very satisfied but I'm glad to be beyond that bitch. The next true test of my patience is Sen's Fortress, fortunately when I finally hit Iron Golem he goes down first try. Anor Londo makes me a believer in the majesty that is the original Dark Souls. Though I was having fun despite my frustration before now I'm just totally sold on the game. Ornstein and Smough are difficult but amazing, this isn't the BS that was Capra Demon or the cheese that was plunge attacking Taurus Demon to death and it wasn't even the death by attrition Gaping Dragon was since he'd never hit me but my attacks were weak on him. This was what Dark Souls was all about. I'd like to tell you the game had me from that point on but we all know about Lost Izalith and Bed of Chaos, needless to say I was wondering what they were smoking when doing those segments.

Since early 2018 I've double dipped on Dark Souls 3, getting the Fire Fades Edition for PS4 and beating it 4 times there, double dipped on Dark Souls buying the Remastered for PS4 and beating it 3 more times, and finally just recently bought Remastered and Dark Souls ll vanilla for Steam on sale. The games are a marriage of all the things that matter most to me in a game, challenging gameplay, atmosphere, amazing level/world design and awesome bosses. The franchise has solidified itself as my favorite, however lat to the party I am.

Totally forgot Sekiro, haven't beaten it yet, mixed feelings on stealth and rhythm based combat but worthy addition!

Okay, I just realized how much space this is going to take up to keep going like this... so there's entry 1, if this is worth anyone's time to read I'll continue it, lol

I really want to contribute to this thread, but I've been working on my list forever. When I first sat down to make it, I shuffled games up and down a great deal before realizing that the only way I would be satisfied with my rankings would be to make a spreadsheet and let every game battle it out against every other game in a head to head matchup. Each winner receives a point, and if I ever finish, my spreadsheet will auto rank my all-time list. But I've been doing this for years, sometimes going back to replay games, watching youtube content for refreshers, sometimes agonizing for long periods over single matchups on my list. I hope I'll get it done before I check out. :p

Hello everyone. New poster. Happy to be here and/or meet you all and all that.

A friend of mine pointed this thread out to me and I found it interesting so I threw together a quick top-50 list of my own. I have my preferred genres and naturally that's reflected in my list.

One other thing I'd mention is that while I put these in a rough order, the further away from the top you go the more I just kind of eyeballed it and could have ranked games completely differently just based on whatever mood I was in at the time. Last thing I'd mention is that the games that made my list are the ones that made a truly lasting impression that withstood the test of time. That tends to mean that games with good story and characters likely hold up better than others for me over the long haul.

  1. Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
  2. Planescape: Torment
  3. Star Control 2: The Ur Quan Masters
  4. Persona 4: Golden
  5. Dragon Quest VIII: The Journey of the Cursed King
  6. The Last of Us
  7. Dark Souls
  8. Mass Effect 1
  9. Fallout 2
