GRID Tech Preview: PS4 Pro vs Xbox One X Graphics Comparison by Digital Foundry

Rez
1440p on PRO
1728p on XBONEX

Framerate
60fps on both systems, more stable framerate on PRO.

-----------
This is a funny one, PRO version looks sharper to me, has better grass and AF and framerate, but TOM says it looks immediately sharper on XBONEX, says it has better grass on XBONEX. I see a bit less aliasing on XBONEX, maybe it has better AA there, but it's definitely sharper on PRO. seems blurrier on X, just like in the DMC5/RE2 games. Think Tom is mistaken here; better framerate, better grass, sharper on PRO over XBONEX.....

I thought the same, especially the grass which made me think he had the wrong labels on the comparisons.

That's what happens when you're reading from a script full of $$$.

OP is such a salty console warrior. Pathetic

In this instance it is you who needs to look in the mirror.

They updated the video description with the following:

UPDATE: A correction on the grass point between Pro and X. The labeling is correct in the video - it is indeed the PS4 Pro that has the full grass enabled, while Xbox One X doesn't in this build. We simply got the two muddled during the voice recording for this point - for sure our mistake, and apologies for any confusion.

Thing is, with an increase in resolution, you will also increase fillrate, and stuff like grass or other alpha based effects will come at a much higher cost in a higher resolution. HOWEVER, there isn't much of any excuse for it to not be there at all. That's just oddness.

And as for the AF, yeah, the same can be said, increase your resolution and AF will tank your performance in some cases. That's likely why it was paired back here.

I still have to say, this game is... Well, its not really showing me anything I would expect. It seems more to me that the devs have picked certain settings for certain cases, and so yeah you will get a few visual differences, but IMO, they picked the wrong way, and at a glance, they are being a little too cautious here. There isn't any reason the game couldn't run with a higher AF or increased grass and just *possibly* lose a few frames in extreme cases.

Its another odd one for me, because while I see what they wanted to do, I don't agree with how they went about it.

I never understood these console versions comparisons. They booth look like shit and if you care that much about graphics just get a gaming PC.

Had a better AA on PRO and... grass?
Strange.

In exchange for 44% higher resolution. It's not mystery that Xbox One X is significantly more capable than Pro, at this point there's no denying it, so if there's a difference, it's really just in the hands of the developers. They either removed the grass to make sure the 60fps is locked at the 44% higher resolution, or maybe a different team handled the grass, or maybe the grass was supposed to stream and never did because of a glitch.

The bottom line is, there's no magic in the Pro hardware that would allow it to have better grass, it all comes down to programming.

I think it should have the same grass and AA as Pro as well as 44% higher rez though, its had the same graphical settings and higher rez in plenty other games. Remember this ain't final code and maybe Pro is ahead of X in this build cause there's no reason why it shouldn't at least match the Pro with higher rez.

Actually game genre, engine, and lets be honest programmer capability all feed into performance. There is no (this one did this so ALL can do that) magic bullet in game design. Many developers have talked about this kind of stuff in depth on various podcasts and GDC talks as well including platform differences on a much smaller scale than normally discussed causing issues in ports and duel platforms.

Personally looking at the video I would much rather have them go for a same res same effects standpoint here rather than trying to force res.

While i do agree this game should run with the same settings as Pro at the same resolution and then scale up the resolution from there.

Right, I made that clear with some of my examples as to possibly why it's not there.

so the real take from this is unoptimised code not running as well as it should. looks like one version is further along than the other and still work to be done till the games released

Oh wait this isn’t final code?

Fucks sake lol
While TLW tends to put a spin on things, here I think he right in what he saying but it’s still being coded. If the game comes out in that form the Pro deffo has the better version but there is no real reason that the X cannot match the pro but at a higher Res

Me too. Switch version is the real deal.
I bought the switch version as I wanted a gt like game on switch. It runs and plays nice but I am disappointed. The career mode doesn't let you buy cars. You pick sponsors and are stuck with that car for like 4± races each season. I was looking for a gt or nfs shift style game or even original grid and got drive club style of put you in fast cars right away no selection and no progression with buying new cars and parts. Hell even gran turismo psp had the buying of cars.

It really sucks because the game looks great, runs smooth and has some of the best damage modeling I've seen... Yet no real career mode. Also in order to use manual transmission you have to play in master difficulty, such bs. Glad it was cheap. Although I wish I could get a refund.

Switch has a performance mode 60 fps and a detailed mode 30fps. Seem's to drop from 60fps quite often but it does look impressive to me all things considered.

I think switch version is the original game from ps360 port, this is a new game on grid saga.
