Xbox as a console brand seems to be really dying lately can Scarlett change that or will it be a short lived project?

There was more hype around Xbox Scorpio than there is around Scarlett , Xbox One X started off with a nice push from Microsoft but it seems like they quickly gave up on it you can get a Xbox One X for $402 right now but no one seems to care that it's $97 off . You can get the Xbox One S A.D for $200 right now but no one seems to care, These are Holiday shopping prices but it's not creating a buzz at all , if people are not buying these consoles with 19% off discounts it has to be the brand that is undesired. Even walking into a retail store like Wal-Mart the Xbox section is like a 3rd the size of the PS4 section like everyone is giving up on Xbox.

Next year the biggest competition for PS5 & Xbox Scarlett will still be PS4 & Switch so Scarlett will need to bring the Xbox brand back in a crowded market & if it fail to gain traction at launch will Microsoft continue to push it or just move on to the Games as a service model?

"Xbox section is like a 3rd the size of the PS4 section like everyone is giving up on Xbox. "
this is actually regional based on sales at the store, stores in my area have a tiny ps4 section and half the store is xbox.

You can't say anything negative about Xbox on Neogaf dude. You just can't. There are too many people here that will go through your post history because they at hart are little children who can't actually read a post.

On the other hand. I don't think it's dying. Not as popular as the PS4 or Switch. But far from a dead brand. And I'm sure Scarlett wil do fine. Brand loyalty doesnt really exist much anymore. Many people jumped from 360 to Ps4. If the Scarlett is a better system than the ps5. Many people will jump on the Microsoft console bandwagon.

Everything can happen on a new generation....the 3rd place could become 1st ....this has been since the NES era......

Yup. Sony fans are so quick to forget about the disasterbacle that was $600 USD and the hubris that accompanied the PS3. An underpowered console from the company that finished so far behind the generation before absolutely destroyed the console that would be king for years.

Microsoft has eaten its recent helping of humble pie, while Sony’s hubris has been showing more and more. Nintendo is also doing pretty well for itself. Nothing should be taken for granted once Gen9 gets underway.

Depends on the cost and the games... Microsoft was on a studio buying spree the results we probably will only see next gen.
Anything can happen almost every new consol generation gets shuffeld around based on feels of consumers.

Is that a joke?, its constant negativity. In fact if anyone wants to find me some positive Xbox related threads, i'd like to see them.

I'm going to attempt a serious answer, which is probably foolhardy on my part, given how the thread is going so far. But what the hell.

MS is struggling, from the point of view of hardware sales. They're down by about half. Sony's sales are down, too, but only about 20%, iirc. Some drop is expected at this stage of the gen, but to lose half your sales momentum in a year is pretty bad.

However, they're still selling a decent amount, particularly in North America and the UK. They're not the sales juggernaut that Sony is, but they're doing okay. They're doing less well than they did last generation, but they're hanging in there. There are still plenty of people gaming on Xbox and plenty of Xbox fans.

The studio acquisitions will take years to pay off, but the investment is a good sign. It means they're not just resting on their moldy laurels. True, it's too little and too late for this generation, but at least there is some hope for the future.

It does seem clear that they're less interested in hardware sales and more interested in promoting GamePass as a platform available on many different devices -- "the Netflix of gaming," all that stuff. Whether that pans out well for them in the long run remains to be seen.

I actually think they will be a stronger competitor next gen than they were this gen, because of the studio investments and (presumably) the fact that they won't fall on their faces like they did in 2013.

I think the lack of hype around Scarlett is partly because the X was marketed so heavily as "the world's most powerful console" and Xbox guys constantly sung its praises. The downside of that is that the jump to next gen isn't as large (vs. for Pro owners, say). Some will be excited about a new console, but many will be satisfied with what their X is delivering.

I mean you can't count anyone out after just one generation, just look at the Wii U, but I will say this is the least excited I've ever been about the Xbox brand, not just the games but their console OS sucks too. Coming next generation if Microsoft doesn't fix their crappy update system I won't even be buying multiplatform games on their console even if its more powerful.

I realize this thread already feels destroyed by the OP's credibility but honestly shouldn't we wait for these damn consoles to unveil to decide who's going to lose next gen? I mean, are there even real losers any more? People like to point out the success of PS4 vs Xbox One and the Switch is outpacing both through the same time frame but the One is a bigger seller for Microsoft than 360 was, and the 360 was arguably the champion of last gen (Wii sold most but was kinda so far apart it was doing its own thing, PS3 eventually outsold it in lifetime units but it's hard to argue what that gen was like during the gen, it was the 360 gen) so what's happening is we're using relative standards to say they're failing but only when it suits our purpose. It'd be like saying any new FPS is a failure because it's got less players than Fortnite or something. If Doom Eternal does twice as well as Doom 2016 that's a success regardless of how many more people play a free to play game.

There's plenty of positive Xbox threads or Phil Spencer threads. I think the worst is saying anything negative about Nintendo or PlayStation with Nintendo being the worst with the gates of Mushroom kingdom opening with a flood of angry comments if you say anything negative. PlayStation as well. I personally like games no matter which system it's on. Though I use my PS4 more than my Xbox. I still like my Xbox a lot and my Switch is the least used. But PC is where lately I've been doing most of my gaming.

If I can find an x with SW JFO for about 300 for black Friday I'll probably pick that up.

The Xbox brand is strong enough that it's still standing despite all of Microsoft's mistakes and bad management.

If anything, that's a testament to the longevity of the brand. They can turn it around, they can also mess it up worse.

I expect some combination of the two.

Xbox had never been a console brand imo. MS needed a way to get their Windows ecosysten into the living room and designed a small form factor PC that ran Direct X.

They knew the stigma of having a PC in the living room. Its understandably not for everyone.

It really is that simple.

Do people really forget how MS made their money?

I don't think it's dying, but I think we're going to see similar results next gen in terms of console sales. They have a lot of work to do next gen by creating more appealing new successful IPs that will attract gamers.

To me it seem like Scarlett will be a base for the software but only a small part of the user base. Like the games will be made around the specs of Xbox Scarlett but if Scarlett don't take off they will continue with the games but focus on the games being playable on PC & other devices.

Yeah, but that's like an actor who is only able to get roles for years because they're married to some major studio executive.

Dont know why i'm doing this but my 2 cents. Imo Scarlett will rebound a bit compared to the XB1. I feel 60-70mil lifetime sales, with PS5 being the winner. Sony is simply more popular worldwide, and i'm sure Microsoft themselves know that. I think 60-70mil Scarletts, and growing PC game and services sales, and Microsoft will be more than happy with that.

What mistakes Microsoft made in the last 4 years? I think they did a good job of righting their wrongs over the last few years but it hasn't changed the tide.

Honestly with game streaming taking off, and console controllers being compatible with iPad and iPhone. I’m not seeing PS or XB doing as well next gen. As in maybe 30M Xbox, and 90M ps5? Unless we see a generational leap from the pro and x models, like 8k. 60 FPS at 4K, and graphics that look better than life. To compete with the exploding mobile game market that is going to kill it once we get ps now and Xbox cloud to start working on iOS and Android.
