New blame everyone else for being a shit parent class action lawsuit AHOY!

Fortnite is one of the most popular video games of the present day, but a new class-action lawsuit currently being prepared in Canada is claiming that this fame has been bought via nefarious means.

According to Alessandra Esposito Chartrand, an attorney with Calex Légal, Epic Games spent "many years" working with psychologists to find out how to make its Battle Royale game as addictive as possible so that players would become hopelessly hooked:

The case – which focuses on the parents of two minors, aged 10 and 15 – is being likened to the 2015 class-action suit against tobacco companies in which the Quebec Superior Court ruled that tobacco companies did not do enough to warn people about the dangers of smoking. It also cites the recent classification of gaming addiction as a disorder by the World Health Organisation.

In order to play Fortnite, users are asked to give up any right to sue Epic Games, and must instead go through individual arbitration, but Chartrand argues that these terms of service are null and void "because the province's Consumer Protection Act requires companies to clearly disclose risks associated with products or services

So thoughts?

Why not do some actual parenting and frigin set some ground rules when it comes to gaming. I’m not a FN fan or give a shit either way but parents putting the blame on gaming activities should first look in the mirror.

"We let Fortnite ruin our childs life because we're shit parents who can't be bothered to actually...parent...our children."

Growing up my dad took away my gaming privileges more times than I can remember. After a particularly stupid act on my part, which got me suspended from school for something like 6 weeks, he basically held it hostage for about a year until I got into sixth form. Video games don't ruin children's lives; weak-kneed parents do.

Sometimes I wonder if these parents really think the rest of us are that stupid.

So it's 10pm and your kid is playing Fortnite. You ask them to stop. They refuse.
Are these people trying to say that they don't know how to turn off their internet router?
Or even just cut the power to the house for like 5 seconds if it becomes THAT bad.

"Hey Little Jimmy no more videogames tonight".

If the kid says "nah I'll keep playing thanks" then that's it? The parents are foiled and there's nothing they can do?

At least with booze and tobacco etc you could have an excuse if the kid is leaving the house and stealing it or some older kid or homeless dude is buying it for them or whatever. Fine. Some things you can't control.

A game that requires and internet connection AND (unless the kid is playing on mobile or a laptop) a mains power supply but you still can't prevent your kid from playing? That's just fucking lazy ass parenting.

What really makes any game addictive anyway? The articles mention that the game is "addictive" but never really go into specifics.
What is it about Fortnite that makes it addictive as opposed to other video games or even other activities like Tennis or Chess or something?

Just don't let them play it then. Like if my kid was addicted to a game to THIS degree then when they go to school I'd just take the controller and hide it in the trunk of the car or something and there you go. They are playing on their phone? Fine. Good luck finding your charger. The Internet is mysteriously down again tonight? Wow, guess you'll be missing out on Fortnite.

AT LEAST make the kid work to get around your roadblocks. Not "he won't stop playing and I can't stop him so let's sue the company that made the game".

Most major tech companies will definitely seek out this type of thing. Ask Alesandra how they like their cell phone? Wouldn't it make life a lot harder if your phone's user interface was a clunky mess or not helpful at all? There's also a lot of people who think Fortnite is a one-and-done type of game. It certainly didn't feel addicting when I played it. I played a couple matches then uninstalled it for the free space on my hard drive.

The thing is, Microsoft and various companies use ways to learn the human mind. We would all be complaining about technology if they didn't. A video game company wants to make the best possible game and if they understand the human condition then they'll do a better job at making game(s) for everyone to enjoy. Being ignorant and not realizing it is the problem. Being a bad parent is the problem. Unplug their machine or get rid of their cell phone. They aren't grown ups just yet.

Maybe you should parent your fucking children you stupid cunts. I have two kids.. the youngest is not even 2 yet, but the oldest is going to be 4. She plays Spyro, Ratchet and Clank, and sometimes even Minecraft. She knows that if she does not do as she's told, we will take it away and she doesn't get to play it all day too - only when we say she can. Every time she threw a tantrum we'd warn her we would take it away and when she'd escalate, we did exactly what we told her we would do.

Now she listens. If I told her to turn it off and eat dinner, she will do exactly that. I'm the parent, they do as I say.

Some fucking people are just retards.

You gotta make your game addictive or players will go next door to get hit. Billion dollar Gaming companies are immoral, like casinos and philip morris and that hoodie wearing psychopath from facebook.

Still trying to figure out if the Japanese dad went out to buy the sledge for that occasion, or just had one rocking in the apartment.

either way, that is some badass parenting, lol.

just puttin it out there that maybe it is better not to give kids cigarettes and cocaine video-games and youtube in the first place Instead of using it as a discipline tool.

i have no kids so feel free to tell me to fuck off.

There's nothing inherently wrong with letting them watch *a* video or play *a* game. It's harmless and as a parent it's not hard to tell them NO and turn that shit off. As a parent I should be aware of WHAT they are watching/playing and how MUCH of it they're consuming. Not letting my kids watch commie/liberal propaganda is one of the ways we're working to ensure they don't end up like one of those blue haired pussy hat wearing feminist land whales who march the streets in the nude with SLUT marked on their tits. Fucking degenerates those people are.

Fortnite somewhat ruined gaming...but it's temporary until it dies. As for the kids - I can't say whether that's temporary.

Don't tobacco companies put something addictive in their product to keep people buying them?

if you let a game ruin a child's life then you are a bad parent who refuses to see the fact that your bad parenting is what actually ruined the child's life.
