They genuinely believe they are pioneering a new way of thinking, which is why they bury a lot of their rhetoric behind distinct coded language and doublespeak (which would be an actual dogwhistle, by the way). It is the next evolution of the hipster who must show off their uniqueness (and in this case, wokeness too) to the audience around themselves.

The truth about all of these relationship threads is that the story is ALWAYS one sided and there are ALWAYS little red flags that say "something is not right here".

So he was 23 and she was only 18 when they met. Hmmmm....
