Sony is currently verifying PS4 games on PS5

Something that slipped under the radar during yesterday's PlayStation 5 announcement (or maybe unlike everyone else I just didn't notice until this morning) is that Sony are currently verifying that the PS5 will be 100% backwardly compatible with the PS4. Some articles:

My two cents: I think it's safe to assume that the vast majority of PS4 games will play on PS5 without a hitch, but there will be some that won't make the cut, for whatever reason. Still, Sony have a long time yet to get it all working and future software updates will of course be a thing, so lingering issues can be fixed.

I thought they already took care of this with the patent they filed a while back for PS5 hardware to mimic PS4 hardware with clockspeeds dropping to PS4 levels.

It would be great if devs could just add a flag for ps4 games on ps5, like ps4 pro games.

To enable a higher res or frame rate on ps5, with not that much work from devs.

Validating every game on a mature system is no fucking joke! That's a serious time and labor investment.
Its not something that's going to be done in a week or two, and while product is still being published for PS4 the finish line is constantly being pushed back.

And how about The purshase of ps4 psn store... Will be a exception?

They did this before in the PS3 days. There will be a list of games that have known issues, and games that have not been tested (try at your own discretion).

If they didn't mess anything up in the architecture, the overwhelming majority of PS4 games should run fine on the PS5.

I hope they don't just forget about Vita, PSP, and PS3. There's a lot of great titles on PSN for those system(s). I just hope its BC with digital PS4 titles. I'd love to boot up the PS5 and browse my PS4 library.

I'm expecting less issues than in the past, thanks to APIs that are more developer friendly. Back in the day, most compatibility issues were caused by coding hacks.

I'm really confused by the amount of replies about backward compatibility being useless.
How is it a problem for you if it's there? And don't you guys care about game preservation at all? You only play the latest released games and never older things?

Interesting concept. I think its equivalent to say "I dont watch movies released before 2018".
Yeah this.

More like I only watch Blu-ray movies in my Blu-ray player.
That means I won't use it to watch DVD lol

BTW that is how I did in previous gems... I never played any remaster for PS4 that I already played on PS3.
Even the Cross-buy titles like Flower, Journey and others I only played on PS3.

Well psvr will profit the most from this, since the new headset won't be for s while after release, so that means that all my vr library and headset will work on day 1

That's a massive plus

Imagine having a job where you just sit playing games checking that they work properly.

Someone won the job lotto.

I've said it before, Sony needs to have 100% PS4 BC for a multitude of reasons (few next-gen games during the cross-gen transition period, immense backlogs, subscriptions/rentals, digital games, evergreen games, games as a service etc.)

Contrary to the popular belief, QA testing is not an admirable job. Minimum wage ($10/h) and sooner or later it will make you hate playing video games.

You’re also an expendable contractor treated like a lower class citizen. It’s a shit job.

Watch it be "PS4 games playable at original spec" ie no enhancements even at PS4 PRO level.
That'll be highly disappointing, if true.

I mean, even PS4 Pro got a boost mode with a system update, so who's to say the PS5 won't be able to offer the same, or even more?

3.2 GHz CPU clocks ain't gonna break any modern game. We don't live in the DOS era where devs used to sync refresh rates with the CPU clock. :)

OK, maybe they'll offer OG PS4 compatibility day 1, but it's not unreasonable to expect something more with future system updates... Cerny and Co will deliver, sooner or later.

There always going to be a few games that arent compatible, even the PS2 and PS3 had games that werent BC with them.

The original Phat PS3 had the PS2 chipset included on the motherboard, so the only compatibility issues at that point were games that relied on incompatible peripherals. So save for games that relied on peripherals, that was initially false for the PS3.

It wasn't until Sony tried (and failed, miserably) at software emulation on the PS3 with the MGS 4 bundle that games started breaking/becoming unplayable, including classics like Chrono Cross. Sony eventually put a site up listing all of the NA PSX and PS2 titles and what state of compatibility they were in (non-playable, partially playable with caveats, or fully playable) when they went to software emulation.

They said earlier that ps4 games will run 4k 60 fps no prob even 8k if you will want. As they called ps5 8k console that 8k will come for ps4 game i think not ps5 games. So this is old news kinda...
