Sony is currently verifying PS4 games on PS5

I don't think they'll need to test all PS4 games, there are thousands of them (including indies). Did they do the same for PS4 Pro?

The most critical ones are 1st party AAA games using the GNM API and handwritten x86-64 assembly. I'm talking about games like Insomniac's Spiderman (although that will most likely get a PS5 patch, judging by the SSD demonstration).

The average, asset-flipping, shovelware indie uses engines like Unity and GNMX API. It's PC/DX11-style coding in a nutshell, nothing fancy to worry about about breaking BC.

Some people didn't buy the so called "pro"
Not me ;)

Amateur forever here.

I will say that I think the Pro model a mistake because it didn't reach the goal of the same performance between Pro and Amateur creating a unfair play field for PS customers something that broke the original Sony's promises with the Pro machine (well it was a bad ideia since beginning... I said that when Sony hinted at) but that is a discussion for another thread.

Guys, companies don't care about how many consoles you buy.

Someone who bought OG PS4, 100 games and 5 years of PS+ is a more valuable customer than someone who bought PS4 Pro, 10 games and only 1 year of PS+. Same for XBOX, even Phil has said it himself.

PS5 (Pro) will be no different. A console is just a vehicle to sell you more stuff, with higher profit margins. That's why I'm hoping for the PS5 to take a (reasonable) loss. :)

pathetic. like this changing PSN name crap, where you would loose stuff.... seriously, what a bunch of amateurs.

Yes, look at those other fellas with 100% BC with their previous consoles... uhm... yeah... oh look there are none :p.

Seriously, are you on a trolling mission?

Good stuff. I hope it works out well for them without any complications
This is gonna be awesome. Watch as I dance my way into a gamestop trading in PS4 to get that healthy bonus credit to get my PS5.

I'm really confused by the amount of replies about backward compatibility being useless.
How is it a problem for you if it's there? And don't you guys care about game preservation at all? You only play the latest released games and never older things?
Well, at least you get to know which users on here who don't have opinions worth a damn, so there's that.

The thinking is if BC is included, it leads to:

Reasonable assumptions
- Higher costs (don't want to pay more money)
- More devs focusing on last gen games, than making new gen games (fewer new games)
- Other gamers playing older games (leads to fewer sales of new games, so devs make fewer new games)

The truth
- The gamer wants a new gen only system so he can brag his shiny new plastic box plays the latest PS5 or Scarlett games, and not be known for playing old games on a new system (elitist asshole)

On my original launch unit also.

I have a 4K set and still didn't upgrade. The base unit does HDR, and virtually every game I play is 1080p so it scales nice and crisp on a 4K set. Nothing like the 720p to 1080p scaling mud of last gen.

First party games don't handicap themselves on the base, so smooth sailing into next gen.

Now if most games were less than 1080p, I may have been more tempted to.

I don't see why not, as long as the developer makes those available via a patch. Lots of games have a Pro patch that already does exactly that. Diablo 3 and Elder Scrolls Online immediately jump to mind.
But the Pro is a beefier PS4, the PS5 is a new hardware. It doesn't work the same

PS4, Pro and PS5 are all semi-custom, PC-based hardware. That's why it's technically possible to offer patches for free. MS even offers free 360 BC patches, even though that requires more effort.

We will never see something like the PS3 -> PS4 transition ever again. Refactoring SPU code to GPGPU compute shaders was not easy.

Also, remember when Cerny had said that releasing PS4 Pro patches requires minimal dev effort? I bet he will tell us the same for the PS5 in Feb 2020, along with presenting PS5 enhanced versions of RDR2, Spiderman, Uncharted 4, TLOU2 etc. ;)

I am curious if any games will be difficult and unable to be backwards compatible. There’s always a couple of titles that just won’t do it.

Same, hopefully I can get trade in credit for the PS4 Pro, same with my Xbox One X.

As an base PS4 owner with no plans to go Pro, I'll buy day one if I can play PS4 games on 4K. It would be enough for me if they performed exactly the same as a Pro.

Sony should focus BC for PS3 games too. I really want to play Drakengard 3 & Nier.

I wouldn’t get your hopes up for true PS3 compatibility. I want it too, don’t get me wrong, but from how technically advance the Cell is, I think even modern gaming PC’s have issues with PS3 emulation.

Zen 2 is actually performing really well with it, so there is still a semblance of tiny hope.

I’m not going to let you get my hopes up!

Still, it would be cool if they get it done. That and PS1-PS2 emulation.

If PS3 emulation was a thing, they would have already mentioned it.

Wow. And this is running on a Windows OS layer too.

Please do it Sony!

Nice. Might actually get one at launch if BC works well. I don't have have a PS4 anymore and would love to try exclusives like GoW, Spooderman and such.

Maybe I'm not hip enough but this level of thinking is beyond me

Am I missing something here? :/
I don't think you are but it's not complicated. There are different types of people, those who revisit old games and those who don't. I bought a Phat PS3 with full BC when they announced they will be discontinued but over the gen I only put one PS2 disc in it and that was just to see if the BC works. There are just too many new games for me to be going back and playing games I've already completed.

That’s a fair point but when’s the last time anyone booted up a PS1 game on OG PS1 hardware? I’ve got mine still sitting next to my SNES and other consoles, but if I’m going to play MGS or FFVII I’m going to use a PS2 or PS3 with the extra features for BC.

No, not everyone will use this stuff, but it’s still a value add for those of us that do

I never bought a PS4, soooo this is TOTALLY FOR ME!

I cannot wait to dive into Uncharted 4, Bloodborne, GoW, etc. on the new PS5 day one.

I had the Xb1 Day One edition for the longest time, but my ceiling collapsed and ruined it. So insurance bought me a brand new XB1X (Hold onto your receipts boys and girls). However, I've spent the last two years building a new PC that I've recently completed. So long story short, no need for the next Box with exclusives coming to PC Day and Date.

Guess this Xb1 kid is going to be a PS convert next Gen.

Gimme that Backward Compat!

Which is fair enough but you obviously fall in the other category others fall in the category where it is useless as in they don't use it.

Same lol, useless feature in my opinion.

I'm saying that's a perfectly understandable way of thinking too.

It's a small one...any source for official PS5 lube?

Well we have xbox showergel and fragrance and PS furniture and clothes. Lubes next.

#problematic

I agree that this controller promotes toxic masculinity. It's too phallic/patriarchic, it definitely needs more diversity/feminism.

Exactly :)

Why anyone would disregard such a brilliant feature is, well, beyond me. To have the ability to play the old games you have already bought on a new system is a perfect mechanic

The only logical explanation for it's disregard is the throw away attitude of today seems too well ingrained in peoples perception of what should be.

Testing is a very annoying job actually, because you are not playing for enjoyment, but to break the game.

I did it for a week back about 20 years ago. It was monotonous trying to replicate bugs. Playing the same level over and over again for 8 hours was just ... ugh. Crashes would hinder you all the way along, too. You just had to power off the PS1 and restart it when that happened. Can't imagine many units lasted too long with that going on constantly. I remember looking around the office one time and saw a French girl with her head in her hands as Windows restarted for the 4th time that morning while she was trying to work through the translation of Final Fantasy 8*.

* - it was quite amusing to see those who were involved in the translations part of the process using a walkthrough to get through the game. One girl told me (it was about 90% girls doing the translations) she still sucked at most games, despite playing them all day.
